Bob, appreciate the detail that your digging into on this model.  I too and attempting to put this model together and did the similar research into the best way to plank the hull as I have taken a look at various methods such as Chuck's. 

I got so wrapped up in all of this that I was not getting anything done.

I then decided to simply apply the first plank under the gun port pattern per the instructions as I need to learn how to glue, shape and bend the plank.  Baby steps.  After gluing the first plank I can now see all of the imperfections that I have made so far especially on the gun port band.

You verbalized exactly what I was concerned about and showed pics - deeply appreciated!  And Chuck's added advise now makes it clear.  When I get back to this step, I'm going to try also.

For sale is a 1/4" scale model of the 1764 Chaleur, a  very limited plank on bulkhead from the Lauck St Shipyard.

It was purchased new more than 15 years ago and has not been started.  Don't remember exactly when I purchased it as it has been sitting in the closet since then.

Additionally a 3/16" scale set of Harold Hahn plans, 3 pages is included to be used for model reference.

Note that this kit is very basic that ends up as a hull and basic deck furniture as seen from the pics below. There are no   fittings.

Included is one box of bulkhead frame sheets and another box of various wood strips (Cherry, Walnut and Pine), 6 sheets of plans and 3 Cd's that contain the instructions and images.

I'd like $150.00 or a reasonable counter offer plus shipping via PayPal.   Note that the shipping box is 6.5 lbs,  dimensions: 30 X 7 X 6 from Schaumburg, IL 60193.

First of all, thanks for your research and work with these carronades as this will save time and frustrations for others. I would bet that if you asked someone to point out an offset after the deck is completed, they wouldn't find it.  Enjoying your log!

I also wanted to second the idea of using sandpaper such as adhesive backed 80 grit to the back side of a ruler as stated by CPDDET.  As a woodworker I do this with rules, straight edges etc. to insure that my marking don't slide all over the place. 

For me, it's the discipline of cutting where the blade doesn't wander.  I used a 4 inch scraper that uses disposable razor sharp knives for a straight down cut.  Again, thanks for sharing your pitfalls as I'm about to restart my ship modelling endeavors.  I stopped years ago because of getting so far into a model, seeing something I don't like and then pitching it.  

Observing yourself, you will figure out something innovative - I'm sure of it!  

Patrick, always appreciate your posting of pitfalls and then your creative solutions.  I've had similar problems with drill bits that are not accurate.  Thanks for the ideas.

Thank you so much for sharing not only the development of the Young America but also your background, underlying philosophies toward perfection and the most envious set of tools and workroom that I have ever seen.  This is a true inspiration of what can be accomplished with dedication and  understanding that high levels of achievement is iterative and at times humbling.

I my opinion, Ed Tosti's books are the best written books on modelling and you have taken the tooling a step further.  It starts with an independent mindset and dedication that doesn't let failure disillusion the effort.

Your slipway and gantry along with the lighting is incredible and that is where I'd like to start.   I recently purchased some MDF and t-tracks and I can already note that there's the slightest warp in the board.  Your use of aluminum looks like a great solution so I now will be chasing down some new ideas.
