    Good morning everyone

Coming to the end of this project, but not the build,, as some things cannot be completed, like the derricks and majority of the weathering until i put her into the diorama, later on this year

after gallows all stays are fitted, the one from the superstructure is a pain, the Y shape is soldered together as part of the kit, there are no suggestions as to how it fits or kit parts to help it go in a set position, so i drilled two holes under the guard rails and one into the gallows, however it does hamper the removal of the spare otter board, this is now in black, lol i have seen enough red ochre to last me a life time, this needs to be removed when separating the superstructure from the hull

port and stbd nav lights work and are fitted, all portholes and wheel house windows are glazed i may redo the whole of the wheel house roof again as the kits parts are well below being acceptable, but help slighlt towards the finish i want
majority of the rigging is fitted, but just needs tightening up, most are on slip knots, there is no provision for side stays from the top of the mast, so im not sure where they should go

all boat deck supports are in place, these cannot be fixed to the hull, ladders fixed

    rudder chains going in

and me, still wondering about the aerial wires and where they should go

    Good evening everyone,
i have had a delay on completing her, last week i started to watch Game of Thrones Season 1, the wife was not interested in it what so ever, she told me many times what she thought of it was having never seen any of it, however she sat down and watched episode 10 with me, instantly liked it and started asking what happened in the previous episodes, so we started watching them from the start, she is hooked, and we are on 4 episodes a day, and well into season 2

Good morning everyone, worked late last night, sorting the wiring out, the power supply connections are now in position,

each connection brings another ray of light into the build, hopefully today, subject to DIY projects the top section will be powered up at the same time as the hull for the first time

getting the hull ready to accept the superstructure, prop shaft and rudder fitted but they are removable, in case someone else takes the hull in the future and wants to make her water tight,

they will also have to fill another couple of holes as the power supply connectors are going to be fitted into the hull just under the bilge keel, this will be the same side as the dock side when in its diorama, most likely port side to, that way no wires will be seen

    good evening everyone

its been a strange few months, i thought that being retired, life would be great, and it is, but obvious things outside my garden are not,  But after a couple of weeks feeling quite low/fed up, i have pulled myself back together and the St Nectan continues

i have gone back to the superstructure now and have sorted the bridge wings, and today most of the lighting has been commissioned, all working for the first time, i will work on no flash photos in the next few days, i have a remote built in that will control the brightness, navigation lights will  have there own power supply

slowly the front end is looking like a, well, a front end, a very light weathering so far, not sure how far i will take that, railings and anchor capstan are secured, as well as the ladder, next the  bollards, cleats, anchor and associated gear, and securing points for the stays will be hopefully in place by tomorrow night

some of the remaing bits to be identified, cleaned up and a home on the build found for them

I forgot to show pictures of the deck planking! I think I used a few too many rubber bands at some spots between bulkheads, added some extra curve I didn't want, but I managed to straighten it out pretty well after with a spray bottle and some clamps.

A little progress - all the track wheels are painted & attached (all 48 of them).  Quite a pain to paint - they all have a black ring around them ,which I assume are "tires" - they actually say "continental" on them, which I had to use a magnifier to read.  Had to keep re-painting some of them because I kept smudging them or slipping with the brush.  Never have been much good at painting.

Next up we have the sail making. I first soaked the entire sheet of provided material in some tea for about 15 minutes and let it hang dry. It did dye it slightly, next time I may need to soak it a bit longer. I then soaked it in a 50/50 solution of water and white glue. It was then ironed and laid out over the plans. I very lightly, in pencil, traced out the pattern of the sail, leaving a slightly larger edge for the hem, and the criss cross pattern. Then I cut out the main sail and cut out several strips of the criss cross pieces.

I took the left over water glue mixture and poured it into a small jar and then I laid one end of the strip in the solution grabbed it with tweezers and while pulling the soaked end up and out I pushed in the tailing end into the container. I continued to pull it through the mixture letting it slide along the inside edge of the container which acted as a sort of scraper or drain pulling some of the liquid off the strip so it wasn't completely soaked. I had previously tried to run it through my fingers but that ended up pulling too much off and it didn't hold after lying it in place.

This is the whole thing done and the outside edges folded over and glued in place. The entire thing was then ironed again, which helped hold the edges in place.

I did a couple of test runs on scrap before doing this on the sail. I taped it up and painted the red stripes. I was very careful to take the back of my tweezers at the handle and press down on the tape sealing the gaps around the strips so the paint didn't spread where I didn't want it. Also after seeing some other build threads here and seeing my own practice runs I decided I needed to paint both sides of the sail. The Vikings would have sewn together red cloth with white cloth, they wouldn't have used paint so both sides would essentially looked the same. So I tried to replicate that, and besides the paint soaks through just enough to make the back side look not all that nice in my opinion.

    Front side.

Back side taped up but without paint yet, here you can see how it soaks through. I also didn't yet remove the tape from the front, I used it and what was visible through the sail as guides for applying the paint on the back side.

Finally the completed paint job, front side.

    Back side.

This is where the ship sits now. I need to sew the bolt rope around the sail and make the clews in the corners. I need to shape the yard, make the parrel, do all the rigging, and make the oars. I intend on attaching the sail to the yard before attaching to the mast so I need to wait until that is done before attaching the standing rigging. I intend to let the yard and parrel sit down on the deck and not hang on the mast until after the standing rigging is in place. But I need to slide it over the top of the mast, so standing rigging must wait for now.

I plan to park it in front of the TV tomorrow and watch a movie I've seen already so I don't have to focus too much, while I sew the bolt rope and clews on. I will update once I have some more done, it shouldn't be too long, I expect to have the rigging done in the next couple days or so. The oars I'm not sure when they'll get done, but they will.

Fortunately, I'm a teacher and this is summer break so I have a lot of time to work on ships right now. I'm hoping to have my next model well on the way before summer is over and the next year begins.

Firstly, thank you all for taking the time to comment; and also for the compliments on my Grandad's skills.

With regard to finding a suitable home for her, I'm in Cambridge, although the ship is in Staffordshire.  Ref keeping it on display, yes I'm sure I could find a space (although not quite sure where!) and I understand the comments ref a display case (Grandad had a display case for one ship at home, another was in a case on display somewhat randomly at the local sports centre next to an unusual collection of stuffed birds before a move to a museum somewhere on the coast - I'll find out where); and this is the third of the trio.

In reference to the books mentioned, Grandad did hold a collection of ship-related literature - so likely (I'll check). Whilst in all honesty I do not have a deep interest in sailing ships I was fascinated by these books and their sheer size to me as a youngster.  Upon his passing I was gifted the collection and I have them safely stored in my loft.  Probably approx 50-60 including a series large hard-backed white covered books - googling it would appear that they are in a series who at least some were written by an author called Basil Luddock? Once again, something I would not sell but would be happy to loan as a collection if an organisation would benefit from their content.  Sorry for the thread drift - I know this isn't a book forum

When I do come to move it, I think after your comments that it would certainly merit a dedicated journey in my own car, safely secured in the back.

Thank you all again - I'd be happy to keep you posted with updates on her travels if you wish!

While surfing for info on the hatches of the cannonports I found these 2 interesting sites (1 of which is a PDF).

    http://www.theonrust.com/building-the-onrust1.html
    https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/144580044.pdf

The PDF is very interesting about the channels, chains and deadeyes and is mainly about a Spanish wreck sunk in the mid-16th century off the coast of Florida
Of course now comes the question about the style to follow.
    The channels with  chains

The channels with iron "bars" like the Vasa.

For now I continue to work on the hatches of the cannon ports. One  is "ready" as a prototype (How to build will follow later)

    To be continued,
Thanks for following, likes and the nice comments

BLACK VIKING reacted to Stee F in Advice needed - model ship made by my Grandad
    Hello all

Apologies in advance - I am not a modeller, but I'd be grateful for info and advice that I am sure you can offer.  Following my Father's recent passing, I have inherited a model ship made my by Grandfather of a schooner named Leon (photos attached - I hope).  He completed it perhaps 25 years ago; as an avid part-time modeller he completed a total of only 3 ship models (to his satisfaction!) over his lifetime.

As previously mentioned, I have no idea about such models; to me it looks lovely and I remember the many hours Grandad spent in his shed diligently building it.  I'm now left in a bit of a quandary.  Firstly, I have no space at home to store it.  Secondly, whilst I am planning to store most of Dad's possessions, something like this model is likely to not react well to being tossed in the back of a Transit (everything for storage will be taking a 100 mile journey).  Finally, I do not wish to sell it, or worse still - dispose of it.

As such, I have two questions for you experts; hence me joining this forum - flattery get you everywhere :)!  I'd be happy for it to be loaned (perhaps a permanent loan) to an organisation, society or museum who would enjoy it being displayed.  Alternatively, if I did need to transport it for storage, do you have any pointers as to how best to prepare, transport and store it?

As an aside, if anyone has any info on the history of this ship, I'd love to hear about it.  Please do point me in the direction of any online resources etc

Many thanks in advance for any guidance offered

    Stee

I checked that site, and still waiting for a response from them. I did come across something close, even though above they said this isnt Miss Thriftway, I found this Dumas Kit from late 60's that coincidentally was found half finished in an estate sale also. The is the link to it. But looking at the kit, then looking at my dad's boat, it almost follows the same lines, and I drew in yellow line from the slots to show this. But could my dad have possibly did something different on his own in the from section with the rectangle? Also, my dad's boat is 36" and this kit is 24", but could their be a version of "Thriftway too" that is 36". I do think this is close.

Don't reveal all that I still have to set up with the following buildings... A postern is well planned on the lord's house, and thus a hidden exit on the east side of the village. 😉

I have already put a stone hoarding on the other door (with the sundial), I didn't want to make this one too heavy...
But for example on the guard tower with the wooden hoarding along the length, there are many holes on the outside to receive unwanted guests with all sorts of things...
