Thank you Bob, your compliments are very well received.

Small progress on the living quarters and kitchen. That view will most likely be no longer visible once the front bulkhead is in place. So enjoy that nice genuine poster, sitting on top of the auxiliary fridge:

Some of these parts are not provided in the kit, but taken from the extra set of parts I have.

The kitchen sink (below). The sink was equipped with a small basin and four taps: two for cold-warm/fresh water for cooking or drinking and two for cold-warm/salt water for washing the dishes. When not in use, the sink was covered with a large wooden board (depicted here), used as the only plane of work for cooking. The size of that board was 83 cm x 45 cm. It is no wonder the cook was revered more than the officers, in most cases. On the left wall, a cold storage was used as a fridge, and below another storage area was available as well. Trumpeter did not represent the faucets in detail as well as the large cock located above the sink because it is not visible once the module is assembled. Right above the kitchen is also a hatch (Kitchen hatch or cook hatch) that we will see when we put together the roof/pressure-hull element. That hatch was used to pass small food supplies.

While the Admiral and I sit in solitary confinement here in the Hermitage I completed the staining of the base (cherry over basswood) and applied 2 coats of satin poly.   Did a first pass at weather the half-track and made a pass at the layout.  I had to use modeler clay under the Infantry soldiers feet to get the to stop falling over as soon as I placed them.  The entire base will be covered in an earthen material and other appropriate accessories including some oil drums, jerry cans and perhaps some discard ammo crates.  I am still trying to figure out how I want to represent any collapsed beams inside the church walls.

    But here's some progress photos

    First the half-track

First pass at diorama layout (could change)  I might change out the two "passengers" in the Jeep too. Maybe a guy manning the machine gun, if I can find a figure in my stash.

A wee bit of colour changes the whole look.

At this point I want to say I am really enjoying the build process. I have so far built it pretty much to the plans and it is turning out okay. For a first build, I’m quite pleased with how it looks. Sure, it’s no master class. But I have to remember not to get too caught up by how awesome other builds are.

Thank you all for the kind words and likes. They always mean a lot and help keep the motivation going.

I had decided to keep the courses furled mainly for viewing purposes. I had made them large enough that I could have displayed them either way, but after viewing the ship with them set, I did not like how they blocked the view of a lot of other details. It was not so bad right now as I can spin the ship and get in close to see things, but I thought about it when she will be in a case and viewing will be restricted. Having the courses furled and a ship under topsails was not unheard of in reality and that would eliminate blockage of the deck details. I'm still debating on the lanteen sail. It is a unique sail that could prove interesting to have set, but I wonder if it will block too much as well. Will look at it both ways also but I have a feeling it too will become furled.

Main sails are in place and rigged. As with the fore sails, the braces will wait till other work is completed before I rig them as they just get in the way of any work on the interior. Now to work on the mizzen sails. The mizzen top will be similar to what has already been done but the lanteen will take some study.

Once the sails are complete, there is not much left to build. Anchors and lanterns then she will be ready for a case.

Tonight I finished the foresail running rigging except for the braces which will be installed after all the sails are rigged for easier access. I’ve learned a lot on this set of sails which I am hoping will allow for the main sails to go smoother and quicker as I will be basically reproducing what I just did.

Progress update on the sails, slow but gaining. There are some evenings when I spend an hour or two and may only have one rigged line to show for it. Lots of fitting, and refitting, adjusting and making sure the lines don’t foul each other. I am gaining ground and the nice part is that the main sails should go smoother as I will have the fore sails to reference.

Just a quick update, both spritsail are secured in place and I am now fitting the fore sails. I bent all three to their masts this weekend and have finished adding all the clew, bunt and leech lines to the course along with their corresponding blocks. Now to start threading the lines and locating them to their belaying points.

I made a little progress today. I made 4 of the chainstays and got them mounted on the boat. I also used the Syren serving machine for the first time. It went well and the machine was fun to use. I was slow and careful at first but, once I began to get the hang of it, I was able to go much faster.

I have a couple more questions about the rigging. I am about to to thread the lanyards on the deadeyes. It looks like a lanyard ends up being tied off  to a shroud. Is that correct? If so, what kind of knot is used to tie a lanyard to a shroud?

Also, is it best to get all the the rigging lines rigged up in their places but left loose before doing a final tensioning on all the rigging or is there another better sequence where certain lines are tensioned and tied off before others? I am just leaving the lines loose with an alligator clip on the ends to provide some tension as I continue the rigging the rest of the lines and then do a final tensioning before coiling and hanging the ropes in their places. I'm not sure if this is the best way to go. I hope what I'm asking about makes sense.

    Many thanks.

Today has been decals, props and wash day.I made up a solution of burnt umber from a tube and thinner and started on the panel lines and just kept looking at the silver to bright/clean?So,I started with the tailplanes undersides liked the effect just enough lay down a coat wait about one minute or so and gently wipe witha smooth paper towel. The first pic shows the solution laid to the back of the bombbay door.Pic2 shows the whole side done.Pic3 shows the area behind the bomb bay untouched and Pic4 shows OD and decals all swapped down though subtle the decals are dirty now.I think when all done and in natural lighting it will all show.  Kevin

BLACK VIKING reacted to ccoyle in Making Rope Coils with a Jig by Peta_V
Hey, folks! Here's a great tip for making realistic rope coils. This post was originally made by member Peta_V in his excellent build log for Master Korabel's AVOS kit, which you can read here. Enjoy!
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Here is a short guide, how I do coils.
I have a jig from the scrap wood with 3 removable pins (2,3,5) and 3 securing points (1,4,6).

    1. Secure the line to point 1 and make several loops around pins 2 and 3. I do 4-6 loops so the coils does not look similar. (I start with removed pin 5). Once finished with loops secure the other end to point 4.

    2. Unsecure line from point 1 and pull out the very first loop through the middle of the coil.
    3. Now you have to twist this to form the eye and secure it with pin 5.

    4. Remove pin 2 and fully insert pin 5. Now you can adjust the coil as you want a once happy secure the end to point 6.

    5. Now I secure the coil with 3 drops of CA glue. One where the eye meets coil, second ať the bottom of the coil and third to secure the loose end to the coil. Remove the coil from the jig by removing pin 5 and trim the excess thread.

    6. Place the coil on the deck

    Perhaps someone finds it usefull.
    Stay healthy!

After a few tries came up with first making a template out of cardboard first and fitting it to the ships planks and beams. Lots of fitting. I then traced that template on to a piece basswood and cut the frames out with my scroll saw. Still had lots of fitting and sanding to get them to fit good but it is slowly coming. Not much else to do with this virus scare.

    Thanks Bob,
I decided to spend a little time before going to bed building up the "upper planks" so that they can set up over night and I will be able to shape them tomorrow.

That's it for tonight. Will pick it up here tomorrow.

The main mast rigging is complete! Now for the mizze mast, a few paint touch ups, and rigging detail work...time to start looking for another model.

Suggestions? I want something challenging, but not out of my league. This Golden Hinde by OcCre is rated a level 2.

The construction continues quietly with the installation of the openings.
On the back, the stones are part of the outer wall, so they are rougher on purpose. The first bricks between the half-timbering are also started to see what it looks like.

I have finished working on the fuel tank, located on each side of the Officers/Kitchen compartment. The goal is to create a tank which is as close as possible to the prototype and that will reach under the Control room, as indicated in the blue-prints. It is a tedious work with a lot of adjustments. The bulkhead is completely opened and a round enclosure is fabricated:

The module is dry-fitted into the hull:

I have created a cut in the side water tank, to allow a better view in the kitchen, pantry and toilet room. Batteries will be sitting underneath.

On the picture (above), you can see the round enclosure that will extend under the control room, to form the largest past of the fuel tank.

Now, to paint everything and start installing all the batteries....

Well we finally got some decent duck weather so we took him out for "pond trials".

Of course as soon as we walked up the freeloaders came swimming up for a handout. Not today though.

This pond is directly across the street from my house. Really handy when I feel like sailing or fishing.

The locals wanted nothing to do with him and got up on the bank as quick as they could.

The Captain and First Mate at the helm.

He really floats well. I did not need to adjust the ballast at all. Looks pretty natural. I had him going for about an hour and was a little worried about building up to much heat but when we got back home his insides were cool and bone dry.

I asked to Admiral to shoot a short video but apparently she hit the wrong button.

Well that about closes this one out I will label it finished.

Thanks for all the comments and likes.
