Still working on adding the extra ribbing. A medical emergency in our family has stalled things right now.

Feeling really bummed right now. Was told today that the digital camera I've been using for this build log is my father-in-laws & he just repossessed it tonight. Will have to wait for my wife or daughters smart phones for pics. They are not around much & when they are, they aren't as interested in getting the pics as I am.

Still adding extra "ribs" to the bulwarks for extra stability. I don't have much extra wood to work with so I am piecing strips of the wood that I have to stretch it out as far as possible.

I love what you are doing! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks like this. That one of the great things about ship building. We can do it however we want to!

The frame of this kit is thin & somewhat too flexible for me. Dont know if the pics will show well enough how it is not lining up straight. I have decided to add more wood on each side of the frame pieces & fill in more at the bow & stern to give more stability when I do the planking.

They are pretty big. The instructions have you completely cover them up. I'm a little confused as to why they did that. I guess they give you the option to do something like that yourself if you want. I'm not sure what I'll do.

At first I thought that the fix wouldn't work because of the lower deck but now I see it will be totally enclosed & not seen anyway

Ran into a problem with some of the frame pieces too thin in some spots. This one broke at it's weak spot today. I will add wood to each side to repair it & I am considering doing this to all the rest too.

I started on the framework. Didn't have what I wanted to make sure bulwark were glued in straight so I used these thin wood blocks. They are all the same size & were almost perfect for the space between each piece. Where they were a little too narrow I added layers of masking tape till they fit snug. Not pretty but it works.

Haven't worked on a larger ship in a while & realized my work space has been way overcrowded. Not much room to work on a larger build. Spent a whole day clearing all the tweezers, paints, clips, wood peices, various glues, tools, etc. back to clear a bigger work area on my one small workbench. Found an old 2 inch thick wood cutting block 3'3" x 2' out under my shelter. I brought it in, cleaned it up & put it on my workbench & extended my bench top out 4 ". Now I have more space to work with. Have started punching out the bulwarks to see how they fit & begun the first stages of construction. Some pics to follow soon.....

Looking great Michael. I love small builds. I got started in wood ship modeling when I was a teenager doing small builds from scratch. I had books with ships plans & I would pick up scraps of wood people were trowing out & see what I could make. Back in those days I had nothing but a pocket knife & some sandpaper!

My 1st build log. It's been a while since I've had a wood ship kit to build. A new friend understood my longing & surprised me by mailing me this Scottish Maid kit. The box came in from the USPS & I felt like a kid at Christmas. Here are some pics of what's in the kit...

Mercury by DSiemens - FINISHED - BOTTLE
JesseLee replied to DSiemens's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1801 - 1850
Enjoyed viewing this log. I got my start making miniatures like this from scratch when I was a teenager. I always carved solid hulls because of the size so I am impressed you did it the hard way. Very nice work!
