    Jesse,

Still have power, what better way than to build and get the mind off the storm. Kudos.

    Beautiful work Jesse!
I agree GS hypo cement is a godsend. I used it a lot back in my watchmaking/clockmaking days.

I hope you stay safe from Florence.

Jim, thank you for the compliment. Actually I altered the lift drawings in my Syren drawings and used the 18ft yawl drawings from "Anatomy of the ship book USF Essex" to make my jolly boat on the aft davits. It was quite the adventure. I show some pictures of my progess in this log.

I've finished the ships boats and I've started on the bowsprit. I have the bowsprit tapered, and fitted and currently the stain is drying. I'm fairly sure I have the angle correct.

I'm putting some pictures of the longboat I built for my Surprise. It was a traditional plank on frame build of natural wood. This Dremel carving is very difficult for me and I'm running out of cutting bits small enough to get into the cracks and crevasses. Oh well...I'll just keep on plugging.

I'm rough shaping the exterior hull of the longboat with my Dremel. I've got the profile of the bow and stern exactly the shape of the provided keel pieces. I'll probably have to shift to hand sanding to make sure I don't take off too much and to give the hull that streamlined look.

Building this long boat will be more of a sculpting project than a normal boat building. It'll be the most delicate Dremel work I ever had to do.

I used to be a bench jeweler when I could work. I used to use the stuff at work but realized how well it would work on tiny rigging knots.

Did something a little different for the cleats. I have had glued on cleats come off in the past so I wanted them more secure. I measured and marked where they are and drilled small starter holes for them with a small twist drill. I then used these small drill/reamer tools I got many years ago. They twist i and open the hole. Then you can use them like a mini file or rasp to remove wood. I slowly did this form one hole to another to open up a slot through the boom and gaff. I pre-shaped the cleats out of scrap I have.  When all is shaped and ready I put glue in the open slot and push the cleat all the way through so it is sticking out of both sides then shape them up down to proper size.

Don't know when I will get back to the shipyard. One of my Aunts died and I will be going out of town for a few days, leaving there and going straight to a Dr. appointment.  I will most likely be very sick from the travelling and my body will crash on me for a few days when I get back.

I have tapered shaped the boom and gaff. The laser cut jaws supplied have split several times in the process of gluing them. I'm going to try to see if CA glue will soak into them and strengthen them after they are lightly stained. Will probably have to tear them off and re-make them with better wood.

After a break of about 2 months enforced by several unexpected events I finally found some time and built the 3 remaining hammock nettings. I already described that the ‘unframed’ sides of the nettings were attached via black 100wt silk thread and CA glue to the rope which spans from the boarding panel to the last hammock crane. I neglected to say that it was not quite easy to get a clean finish there. At least I was not able to cut off the net along the rope in a satisfactory manner using fine scissors (img 1, left side). Part of the net was always protruding beyond the rope. I finally ‘stiffened’ the protruding ends with CA glue and removed them via a rotary tool with a fine diamond burr (img 1, right side). After a little touch up with black paint the result turned out acceptable (img 2, 3).

Now that rigging the steering has driven me crazy, I'll go back to wood working and build the longboat
