    all,

My Halve Maen build was already on hold, but during our move to a new house in November 2015, she got lost because one of our friends put her box on the pavement instead of in our car.

After that the enthusiasm to build was completely gone. I spent last year enjoying my other hobbies.

But, as a Dutch saying goes: 'Blood is thicker than water' and the urge to build another ship came back.

So, May I present to you the Spanish Galleon Nuestra Señora del Pilar De Zaragoza (Our lady of the pillar of Zaragoza), a Spanish Treasure Galleon.

    Measurements
    Length: 1110 mm
    Height: 970 mm
    Width: 520 mm

    History
During the 17th and 18th centuries Spanish galleons served the Spanish crown as merchantmen and warships. Many of them sailed between Acapulco and Manila, transporting South American silver to the Philippines and exotic goods from Asia to Mexico, from where the treasures were sent back to Spain.

Commisioned in 1731 and launched in 1733, Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza (Our Lady of the Pillar of Zaragoza) was one of these Manila Galleons built of the finest Philippine wood, she was 112 feet on deck and displaced 1,000 tons. A 4th rate of the Cavogonda class, she was fitted with 50 cannon, two stern chasers and six swivel guns. She carried a crew of 385 men.

For twenty years she sailed the route from Mexico to Manila and in 1750 underwent a complete refit in the Port of Cavite. In 1750, on her last voyage, she set sail from Manila bound for Acapulco. Despite being overloaded, and contrary to the opinion of both pilots and Master, her Captain insisted on weighing anchor at the beginning of September. En route for the Mariana Islands, in the Pacific, they began to have difficulties after sailing into a heavy storm, and she sank taking all of her crew down with her.

I continue with another window, 5 walnut strips glued together, two of them are narrow than others, again credit card's plastic,  the shiny black plastic of the back of the CD cover for glass. Then all is painted in the same way.

I don't like the window provided by the kit.

    Hi.
    A update as promised.

The dragons head is now in place.. No its not by my hand.. its a resin cast one.

Tiles covering the roof are now finished.

This is a test piece to check on the tile fixings. i will be using the black bottom pins as I think they look better. some 2400 in total...Wish me luck and retained sanity. With cocktail sticks in the centres.

    Close up of the tiling.

    And another.

    Yet another...

Cannons in there carriages or boxes. Need to be finished and put into place on model when finished.

Close up of the carriages..Now you can see that they need finishing.

    Thanks for looking in.

    Many thanks Antony.

    Hello again,

as I mentioned before I am in vacation - so I can really spend a lot of time in my shipyard. We have heavy snowfalls - and no one wants to get out, even the dogs want to watch the snowflakes sitting on the couch. Well - so I can do my Berlin more and more. From Monday on I will be back in work...

I started to carve the knee of the head - I never did carving this way before. One side is almost done - still some sanding. It works out quite good. The second big event on the hull is the painting. I found a green that is wonderful in my opinion and comes close to all I read about painting period ships. This weekend I want to varnish the hull. But I am not sure yet. Perhaps I will finish the galion first... not sure.

As always - some pics to show the progress.

    Hello my friends

just some pics as an update. Nothing special happens - just little things like gunwhales, rudder, preparing the chain whales etc

I am still satisfied with the Corel kit. I love that not everything is precut but that there are a lot of items to create. I will finish the hull step by step before I will varnish the vessel. After this I will continue the decks furniture etc. I would not hesitate to recommend this kit to everyone who wants to have real fun. It's not a kit for beginners - expierence is important, patience is essential and improvement is fun. I will paint the model and will buy some sails. Up to now I have done about 200 hours. I think I have the first third done now.

The pics show the progress. I have burnished all metal parts - it's better than painting.

I needed to make a half dozen fire buckets for my project so I took a few photo's to show how I made mine. Once I had a size in mind I made a pattern and cut some thin brass to that shape. I than tinned opposite ends and opposite sides. So that when the brass is rolled into a cone the tinned ends will be face to face. I used a tapered dowel to help form the rolled cone shape for soldering. The rolled forms are a little long/tall for triming down later. Using a block of wood with a hole drilled just shy of bucket height and snug at the top i than placed a ring of wire around top of bucket and soldered in place. using the tapered dowel while soldering ring in to place helped line things up. Should come out looking like this. the next step was to cut out small disc of brass that was just a bit bigger than the bottom of bucket. with the disc on the end of the tapered dowel a bucket was lower over the end and pushed the disc to the bottom of bucket but not clear thur. Just enough of a lip to solder it in place, Some clean up with files and paper is next. Lastly some paint and install handle. Not sure when it became the practice of painting fire buckets red or if there ever was a rule to do so.

    Small Update:

I finished the winch and A-frame; wound the cable around the winch's two drums, then attached the pieces to the deck with medium CA (gap filling).  Used a drop of CA to hold the ends of the cable so I could wind them onto the drum, then another drop to hold the end of the wrap in place so it would not keep unwinding on me.  To attach the cable to the dredges I used 2 mm jewelry crimps to crimp the cable into a loop around the eyelet on each dredge,  For now the dredges are just placed on the stern deck until I decide how I want them to be permanently - on deck or lashed to side.

    Hi my friends

just another day in paradise :D

No - just another update, mainly pics. As I am in vacation I am very busy with my Berlin. This will change when I am back on my desk... But meanwhile I go on step by step. Whoever will build the Berlin - take care of the steps to be done. You have to form the bowsprit before you plank or fix or prepare the forecastle. The masts are square-cut, you have to make a rod (whether with a lathe or by hand with a plane or a knife and abrasive paper - as I do). This works quite god and at the end you have the really satisfying feeling to have made such a cute mast with your own hand... But you have to take care of the steps in the future when you take your way in the present...

Its fun to build the Berlin. Corel offers a challenge - and its great to manage this. It is - as said before - very satisfying.

As usual some pics of the present state of the Berlin.

Hello again - and merry X-mas

I had some time during the holidays and started to prepare the guns. I decided to use the guns and carriges provided with the kit. First - I don't want to buy always new parts; second - they are somehow old-fashioned and attract me just therefore. I burnished the barrels and will not do any other modifications to them. The carriages are quite ok. I stained them in middle-tone walnut and will not paint them. After all I read in different sources the ships or the deck furniture of the Brandenburg navy were not painted inside. But I found paintings were you can see the hull beeing partial painted in some green (like russian green, close to copper rust). This would correspond with other sources about the use of colors on period ships. So I will paint the stern, the capitain's cabin, the upper hull up to the gunwale and the upper parts of the forecastle (all above the gunwale). This painting should be close to the original.

The second part I started to  work on is the stern and all the timberwork there. The decorations will be done later. All in all everything works fine.

    Important note

Always think about the steps to be done in future... You have to build up all items below the forecastle deck - like the anchor bitt, the servants, the ropes for the strand, the cannons. You should not build the forecastle before you finished this work. Too bad that the instructions don't tell you all... But I learned how to handle Corel's kits :D

Finally some pics (I apologize for the bad qualitiy of some pics...)

Great idea!!!  It will make attaching the rat lines easier, faster and more realistic. One (two) question though about the sandpaper: what grit did you use and does the sand paper have any affect on the shroud lines? (ruffing them up?)

I also have reached build burnout. I have spent the past 18 months scratch building the Cutty Sark as she was in her Australian wool clipper days. It has been 50% research and 50% build. It recently took me a couple of weeks just to draw up rudimentary plans for her cut down rig (masts and spars).
Hull and deck furniture complete. Masts almost complete. And that's it, I've had enough. Lovingly wrapped her up to keep the dust off. And in a year or two, I will go back and finish her.

According to an internet search. Hobby: An activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure.

I shall return when the mood strikes...

    Cheers

Hello Les, I think your problem is the other kits are calling to you. I try and not have any other kits around while I'm building a specific model. This keeps me focused on the project at hand rather than looking at future projects thinking they might be easier or I just need a break. The problem is when you take a break, that same project will be waiting for you and you will start feeling guilty for not buckling down and finishing it. This forum is full of models that were started with good intentions, put aside for various reasons, but the main reason is usually lost interest if the builder is honest about it. I have to say here that after close to 20 years of building models and 30 or so ship models that I finished, I don't have a single model laying around that I didn't finish. No brag just fact. Now, yes, I too have those days where I don't really want to mess with the model and even weeks. But I try and push myself to spend a minimum of an hour a day on the model even if it's just to research the build.

Like today for instance, I went into my work room, attached a couple of pieces to the model, only to realize that I did it wrong and had to straighten it out. That is when I called it quits for the day. But the two days before, I spent most of both days on the model. I have bought soooooo many models from friends, ebay, forums and Craigslist where they were started with good intentions but the builder fell short and didn't finish them. Some I was glad they didn't finish because the work was so bad, others I couldn't understand how someone with such a gift for modeling couldn't stay focused long enough to finish the project.

The cannon is designed as a pattern and was turned free hand. The wood is only clamped in a drill. The wood at the stern is pear. I had forgotten to show that I had already cut the gunports. Work was also done at the stern. The "Hennegat" was again made and the gunports were moved still somewhat direction sternpost.
Some of the gunports on the cow bridge are still missing, as the position is not yet clear.

This is roughly the state of the building. I then made the windows at the stern, where a friend said they looked horrible. So I again made it new. And further I have built a 18 pound cannon, which is to serve as a model for pouring.
