Shot Garlands
mtaylor replied to tmj's topic in Discussion for a Ship's Deck Furniture, Guns, boats and other Fittings
TMJ. Get a copy of Historic Ship Models by xu Mondfeld. The most inexpensive place is Ebay though Amazon might also be a good source. It has a good breadkown of the various bits and pieces of period sailing ships. There are some errors but one can follow up with a Google search if something seems "off". -
I do believe we have a few here who had experience with bone glue but I'm not one of them. I'd suggest opening a topic here and see what answers you might get: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/18-modeling-tools-and-workshop-equipment/ I did a search on bone glue and found these two logs which might help. https://modelshipworld.com/topic/27614-prisoner-of-war-bone-model-c-1800-by-shipmodel-restoration-by-dan-pariser/#comment-794900 https://modelshipworld.com/topic/1749-hmy-royal-caroline-1749-by-tarjack-made-from-bone-m-1-50/

Airbrush Paint

For the brown, see if this will help: https://www.masterclass.com/articles/how-to-make-brown-paint -
Have a look here: https://www.wood-database.com/pecan/ They do say this about workability but I'd read the whole article on it before deciding: Workability: Difficult to work, with tearout being common during machining operations if cutting edges are not kept sharp; the wood tends to blunt cutting edges. Glues, stains, and finishes well. Responds well to steam bending.

You have not upset my expectations. I'm just enjoying and learning from what you are posting. As for the "new chapter" I was suggesting maybe a new topic for each carving. But then a gain, it's your choice. Yes, I agree that it's frustrating to put in the time to write and then no one reads it. The only answer I have is for you to do what you feel like doing. If you decide writing posts isn't worth it, then don't.

It does look fantastic. I was going to suggest the same thing as Keith but he got here first. -

Welcome from the southern end of the PNW. By all means, give some thought to a build log. It's the best way to get help and meet other modelers.

Welcome to MSW. I moved this to a more appropriate area of the forum.

Shelby 427 S/C Cobra by CDW - FINISHED - Fujimi - 1:24 Scale
mtaylor replied to CDW's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
I'm in also.. Had thoughts back then about buying one, but several of my fellow Marines talked me out of it. In some ways, I'm glad they did. -
You raise an interesting question and a good one. I've heard in the past that some companies would scale the model such that parts would fit into a "standard" box they had on hand so they didn't need to pay "retooling costs" for special sized boxes. And then there's the "standard" (so-called) size for hobby shop shelves. These could all be urban myths but I do have to wonder.

From watching you develop your past kits and also scratch building and also one of Chris's kits, I daresay your first two chapters are most costly chapters. So all in all, I go along with what the others are basically saying.... don't short change yourself. It's a pity you can farm out the cutting work for the first two chapters and maybe speed up the process and number of kits. And no... I'm not talking about have some Chinese Pirate company do the work.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
