Very nicely done, Jack. I think the base looks good also. Just push it back to a wall and job done.

Ah... thanks for that. I didn't realize they rotated the wings. I'll go spend some time on the video since I bookmarked it.

Da Nang was just up the road from us. Remember that TV show with the nurses in Vietnam... China Beach? That was between us and Da Nang. The only other place I go to overseas was Malaysia to haul Agnew around. Wasn't there long enough to qualify for R&R. Hmm.. 500 feet... you would have been flying under us then most of the time. And now for the build log.... I painted and assembled the first sub-assembly consisting of the swash plate, rotor head, blades, and top hat. I notice I have some glare on the one blade... weird since it's flat black. Working on the rest. I did get my first batch of extra "goodies".... sadly, they weren't a) what I expected and b) were missing half the parts. I strongly worded email has been sent about the missing parts.

I'm not going to like your post, Denis. You have my condolences. -

No worries from me on the mind.... my ran off, played in the mud and came back a shambles. Everything seems foggy now. -
Ok, the light will be a problem. What you're looking for when using the shadow is for the shadow and blade to be a straight line. If the blade is off, it the shadow will be off to one side or the other of the line. Actually hard to explain and my drawing skills stink.
-
Try this.... put a strong light shining down on your penciled lines on the board. Now for the tricky part. Use the coping saw (rotate the work piece if you have to) such that the shadow of the blade is inline with your pencil mark. I've done that more than once and also use the shadow method on my scroll saw.

I've read about those but do you know how they broke them down for storage? I'm just curious.

I did a quick search using the Search at the top right of the page. Key words "Francisco" and "Cross"... Hopefully, one of these will help. https://modelshipworld.com/topic/11177-san-francisco-ii-cross-section-by-aqueous1025-artesania-latina-scale-150/?tab=comments#comment-340027 https://modelshipworld.com/topic/18573-san-francisco-by-greyhawk-artesania-latina-150-cross-section/?tab=comments#comment-571135 https://modelshipworld.com/topic/19197-san-francisco-cross-section-by-osmosis-artesania-latina-scale-150/?tab=comments#comment-587271 https://modelshipworld.com/gallery/album/1971-artesania-latinas-san-francisco-cross-section/

Model Shipways kit of gunboat Philadelphia
mtaylor replied to Ed Mostowicz's topic in Wood ship model kits
That's terrible but with castings, one never knows. If you know how long and the diameter, you might be able to find the right size on the after market . Might be brass or 3D printed. For 3D printed, check Shapeways. -
LOL.... you're right about Da Nang. The times any of us went over to Da Nang, we stopped at the USO. As for the "good Captain", I heard that he got shot a few months after I left. Seems a VC sitting outside the wire. Apparently they were watching. He wouldn't wear the black rank insignias and I think it was the troops saluting him that made him a target. Oh well... long time ago. "I was so much older than, I'm younger than that now." - The Byrds

Boy.. that's a surprise Lou. If you can mix and match and the fit is right.... that's good. I didn't realize the Huey's had padding on the floor. The -34's and 53's didn't have it but had the sound absorbing padding on the overhead and sides. Not surprisingly, on the -53's it was removed in 'Nam. -
This guy was a work of art. He'd inspect (at random even if not on as OD) the guys on perimeter. Write them up for dirty uniforms or dusty rifles. I actually had to carry my M-16 on guard duty instead of my "prefered" weapon. CO told me just take the M1 with me and stash it in the bunker because he was tired of seeing guys getting written up. This OIC actually hounded people he didn't like. On lad was overweight and he was first target. Eventually getting him kicked out on a General Discharge. Others.... any reason at all to write someone up. My final act of nastiness occurred while turning the rotors under power while trouble shooting a funky gyro problem. The bird suddenly shot straight up about 20 feet before I could kill the autopilot. On the ground, I climbed out the cockpit, and he's standing there holding a gyro in hand yelling "I found your problem stupid... the gyro is loose". I didnt'say a work, I threw a wrench and hit in the forehead. Then walked out side, sat on the ground and had cigarette waiting for the MP's. They showed up in the morning and took me to the Colonel's office. He fined me $10 and told me not to do it again. As for the Captain.... he had a royal asschewing that was heard well out into the hanger. Uh... no. Ah yes. Anyone who flew a 53 or is flying them have probably seen that video. He won a Navy Cross as I recall. Semper Fi, my brother.

That was my problem with the aftermarket stuff for the CH-53. Most of it didn't seem to "add" anything. And pictures showed it looked worse than the kit bits. I'm still waiting on the machineguns from them.... <sigh>

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
