1/200 Trumpeter IJN YAMATO - issued by MRC/Gallery Models
mtaylor replied to yvesvidal's topic in REVIEWS: Model kits
Way back in the past, the first MSW splash page (the one you got when you put only the address in your browser at that time) had photo of a huge model of this ship. Edit... found a link.... 1/10th scale. https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1ZCEB_enUS832US832&source=univ&tbm=isch&q=largest+yamato+model+1/10+scale&fir=ESg5s02bKX9NfM%2ChyOLwZERsosueM%2C_%3BdiugppkVDdRDTM%2CvaG-9bCFdijE-M%2C_%3BiD3N-PbAQdjz3M%2C7dEc_NJBrPuOlM%2C_%3BWYKBjj8zMGHWXM%2CvaG-9bCFdijE-M%2C_%3B8zFal9UpyQa0iM%2CRqrdsxpbGAOYQM%2C_%3Biv9QLgfT-lYmVM%2CSFhKgowXU9LcHM%2C_%3BKo0ukWCbzdOoVM%2C0C3KWc71auK_YM%2C_%3B6_mNbQDYRughpM%2CcKMZnaGgb0am2M%2C_%3BBUtYtJftM_747M%2CZ-qLQSpcQwWE8M%2C_%3BMeK-lmfapyROiM%2Ctc3sWcLemXUDPM%2C_%3BkeV3eE5LXaP0dM%2CSr9TjX4bS3QtXM%2C_%3BHnIXzFmye9gq1M%2C7dEc_NJBrPuOlM%2C_&usg=AI4_-kT4OIPnj83kRhs1L7WYzDx5w_i4qw&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwix3M22juv6AhWNLEQIHQrLA-4QjJkEegQIExAC&biw=1431&bih=734&dpr=1- 104 replies

Correct Glue
mtaylor replied to Blacklab's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Just a note on the Smith Industries CA..... When they sell their CA they will add custom labels with the shop/store name on the label. Look at the Bar Code on the back of the bottle and it will have "Manufactured by BSI". My local hobby shop sells it that way and so do several craft stores, all with their personal label from BSI. -
Welcome to MSW. Here's a link to how to upload pictures. There's quite a few pinned posts in that area on how to use MSW.

ModelShipWays does offer a "beginners line" of ships. It's three models and each one builds on what you learned on the previous one. It's a good concept, not a huge outlay in cash. Here's a link: https://modelexpo-online.com/Model-Shipways-Shipwright-3-Kit-Combo-Series_p_5465.html

Indeed it can be daunting. Follow the recommendations about starting small (no masts) and build from there.
-
Bill, the easy way is to look at what's in the kit.

Correct Glue
mtaylor replied to Blacklab's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
I just use straight Elmer's white glue. Being careful to clean up any that gets outside the gluing area is a priority no matter what glue you use. -
I don't see why not. If you have a ropewalk, pick up a small amount of thread and try it.
-
Welcome to MSW, Ross. Are you also a builder of models?

You might try asking them if they can order kits from other manufacturers. I'm in the States but my local will order for items they don't carry as stock..
-
Yes you can post the stage coach. We have a section for non-ship models.... https://modelshipworld.com/forum/73-non-shipcategorised-builds/

I hope the test goes well. If I remember right, the blackening agent bonds to the metal with little penetration. However, it is a good bond as it's original purpose was for guns.
-
Brass Black, it does what it says.. black. Probably what you need was the gun bluing stuff. but I'm not sure if works on brass. You'll need to do Google on it and check. Many hardware stores sell it I'm not sure if popping the blackend brass in vinegar will remove but worth a try on some blackens scrap sprue.

Turn a scalpel blade into a saw
mtaylor replied to bruce d's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Well, I tried it with an old blade and it works very well on the scarp wood. Well worth the effort. Thanks for sharing this Bruce. -
That's interesting that it's US only. Not sure why unless there's a block for some reason. Tom, above, could be right that it's not "secure" as some ISP's block unsecure sites. I note that the addy for your site is http://www.modelerssawmill.com/. Looks like it's missing the "s" at the end which means it's secure. I'm not sure how you get the "s" though so contact your web provider ISP for help.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
