mtaylor reacted to James H in 1/50 - HMS Supply - Artesania Latina - by Kevin
Got to 100% say that if MSW is ever described as 'elitist', then this is the sort of comment that makes that happen.
Should a reviewer spend their time on the minutiae of details while they write? Should we be naval experts (or experts on that specific subject) so we can fully verify ship details? Should be have an arsenal of books with us to guide our fingers on the keyboard?
If you ever want to get a kit and then try doing just that, then please feel free. You can then see how whatever you do is sometimes a thankless task.

As mentioned above I am pretty sure there are no qualifications to join the NRG.
I am also pretty sure no one is obligated to research a kit before giving a review. There is nothing wrong with pointing out the things you like about a kit, but by the same token there is nothing wrong with others pointing out mistakes they find in those same kits.. The way I have learned so many things about ships of old are from those that, thankfully, pointed out the mistakes in my own work, and so it should be with the kits.

ok, but to make the point i will still not be good enough to fulfil the point made and about kit reviews and historical accuracy as mentioned by @Roger Pellett or maybe it comes with a free brain implant

It means it qualifies to be sold in the gift shop of a museum..😁
Regarding comments on historical accuracy, if that were something most kit builders were concerned with, most kit manufacturers might as well close up shop.
For those who don’t care to lower their standards to build a kit, much less one with some historical inaccuracies, we shouldn’t discourage those who want to enjoy the hobby by building these kits.
Thanks for the review Kevin.

You don't have to be 'good enough' to be a member of NRG Kevin, just pay the membership fee, I'm a member - case in point.🫤

i am not a NRG member, im not good enough to be a member, however i was not aware i had to research the kits that i review, its a way of informing others that new kits are on the market, that might be of interest, perhaps we need another thread, kits reviewed by non NRG members - rant over, and i wont bother again

If MSW is going to review ship model kits, I wish that there was more comment about historical accuracy of the kits. MSW is owned by the Nautical Research Guild that supposedly attempts to improve ship modeling through research.

Good point Chris. There is so much contemporary information available on line today I assumed (maybe a bad idea, I know) AL invests at least a little time doing some research.

Price seems right, but caveat emptor. I am likely completely missing something here but I wonder where they found this information on the guns. Looking at other sources, including the contemporary plans of HMAT Supply 1759 (https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-85220) she only had ports for four 3 pounders plus her 1/2 pounder swivel guns when used as a yard craft. When she was used as an armed tender she carried four 3 pounders plus four carronades. The three pounders were likely Armstrong pattern guns. The one in the photo is quite different than any English cannon. The below shows what these looked like compared to the one in the photo above. I am unsure if the 3 pounders would have had the badge.

You're assuming they looked for such information.

mtaylor got a reaction from Javelin in 18th-Century Merchantman Half-Hull Planking Project by mtaylor - NRG
Another update. Slow going with RL getting in the way at the moment. Got the bulwark tops trimmed and am pretty happy. I know the photo appears to show all the tops trimmed below the line but that's the camera angle's fault. A square shows me it's spot on.

mtaylor reacted to Roger Pellett in Is the Sergal Thermopylae (791) kit any good?
If you are going to buy plans get the best. David MacGregor was a serious student of sailing ships. You can rely on his work. His Thermopylae drawings are reproduced in one of his several books. His lines drawing beautifully captures the ship’s shape.
Almost 15£ Spent on Conwall’s drawing just allows you to reproduce the Sergal kit model with whatever limitations it has.

Cornwall Model Boats has the plans for the Sergal Thermopylae for £14.84.
https://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/Thermopylae-Construction-Plans-Set-961.html
Those plans have the parts sheets included.
You could always scale those plans up to 1/96 scale and modify/build at will.
They also have the plans for the Cutty Sark as well.
The research and learning is half the fun.

mtaylor reacted to Old Collingwood in Battle of Waterloo Attack on La Haye Sainte Farm by Old Collingwood - 1/56 (28mm)
Evening all, a small bit of progress today - I have started to collect some odds and ends - shakos (that needed cutting off from heads then hollowing out) muskets that have had hands cut away and ruck sacks.

Judging by the gentlemen in suits and ties at the far right of the photo, probably a demonstration shoot, but yeah, a very impressive photo!

Yep I've read the same things, but the best results I achieved was with Formula 560, a specific glue for micro thin canopies works very well on the kit canopies as well... It usually take one application as it shrinks to completely invisible level and the bond is something to believe.... Not that Micro clear won't work cause it does, it's just that there are other products that work even better in some circumstances...
This is one of them...
