Ahoy  I built my Jotika Mary Rose kit only using just the keel, bulkheads and a few other parts. So about 90% of the rest was scratch built. You can use the Anatomy of the Ship book Mary Rose to help you along with the books by the Mary Rocse Trust. It took my 3 years for my build, I added the inside details from the main gun deck up with open decks so you can look down into the ship thru the open spaces in the decks. You can see more photos on this web site www.woodenshipclass.blogspot.com  . Keith Glueck from Troutdale,Oregon  Feel free to message me for more info or photos.

The submarine you note as a photo is a later sub that is not the same as the U9.  You can measure photos of the U9 which show the higher deck to saddle tank. Sorry for the disagreement. Just agree to disagree. Also look up the book by Gregor trojac UBOOTWAFFE 1914-1918 for photos of the U9 like on page 53 . Measure them and see for yourself. and there are drawings inside it also on other pages, but none are of the U9.

It's like a lifetime ago-40 some years ago when I started out learning how to file and polish  form die's at work. It just takes lots of just doing. You will get a feel for it just like in your planking skills. And develope your own ways and steps and final finishing mediums.

It's easier with steel because you have material that has no grain to deal with. You might try scraping with very small knife blades. Just like you make your moldings ,but in shaped areas and corners. I use small dental  scrapers for my plastic models and they work great on wood.

It just is that the photos show up everything your eyes do not see.

I have the basic dry dock put together now. Just waiting for the Laser Engraved Brick set to get to me now. Here's  some photos.  Advice in building is to get a sqaure block so that you can glue the uright end sections to the large outside parts square. And work your way down the sections. Look and sight dwon as you build so as to see any out of line parts as you go. I used PVA glue NOT CA! CA doesn't give you time to line up an adjust the sections that you glue. Build it on a board that is flat, I use cling wrap to keep it from sticking to the board or work surface. Boris checked out the fit-he approved!

As for dents, you can use the steaming out of them. Just dab  a little water on the dent, then use the travel iron to raise the dent up. Repeat it as needed. You can also just let the water do its work without heat to raise the dent too.
You can use this to your advantage too, compress the area on the wood that will fit into a slot or under something. Compress it so it fits in easy. Then just before you insert it in.wet it, assemble it and wait for the wood to expand back -and you have a tight joint.  Barrel and bucket coopers use this for sealing the bottoms and sides of the staves by compressing a line in the wood, plaining it down until the compressed groove is level. Then when the wood gets wet, that compressed line expands and acts like a  compressed gasket.

Ahoy Mates Here's my Mary Rose while it was in progress. Used the Trust books and the AOTS book and others for the 90%scratch build using the Jotika kits bulkheads and keel only from the kit.  The Only accurate parts of the ship are the areas that were recovered and documented in the Trust book volumes. All the upper works are conjecture . I made my build with starting with a full main gun deck and up. With most of the deck planking missing so you can look down into the hull to see all the decks and cannons. All the cannons were scratch made . I used Syren Minature rope with Chucks custom made deadeyes he made for me. The rest of the rigging blocks were from Radek at HisModels.CZ . Boxwood and swiss pear was from Jeff Hern. If you would like to see more photos just PM me and I will be happy to send them to you or answer any questions.  Thanks Keith Glueck and Pickels

I recommend this kit for anyone who wants to learn how to build a wooden ship model. And be able to complete your first build! There are two books on it,which I used to add details along with photos of the real one at the Smithsonian .
Here's mine that I built back in 2014. I placed 1st in our IPMS Spring Show for Non Powered Sailing Ships. I had planed  to enter it in the Seattle Spring Show this April , but that Show was canceled due to Covid19. Maybe next year.

Setting my lateen yards for my Mary Rose for the Mizzen and Bonadventure mast's.Being that I have never rigged a lateen yard I want to know if they are set inside of the shrouds, which limits the angle to which they can be set from just fore and aft, or should they be set at an angle outside of the shrouds?

Have looked thru my reference books ,and they do not show exactly where they should be.

Here's photos of how I have just set them on the masts now on the Mary Rose. The Jotika kit finished model photos show them inside the shrouds like I have set them now.

They are just set there, nothing is lashed down,I want to find out before I start to set the lines on the cleats and pin rails. I have not routed the lines to the correct belaying points either.

Thanks ahead of time for your help.  And is there a reference book or site that shows clearly how they shoud be set-the lateen yards .

    Thanks Keith

Rookie question here-What was the established deck planking patterns for the Royal Navy around 1760? And what type of nibbing pattern was used for the end planks and waterway?

Is there a book that has these details for this time period, and maybe others that I could get?

    Thanks

    Hi Ron

I found out that the sides of the upper hull are too short by .100. Look at photos and measure it. I have raised my hull sides and deck up now. And have done other things like detailed the exhaust and intake trunk. Used Archers Decal rivets. Opened up the sides of the trunk and widened the preasure hull there. I see you have made up preasure hull sections. You can see all  y postings on Facebook Wolfpack pages.
