Thank you gents. I like how it's coming together, but that's not to say I haven't made some mistakes! Previous modeling experience helps me recover from them.

I got the waterline figured out, then masked and painted the 'red lead' below.

Next up, getting the centerboard finished. That will complete the hull, then it's on to the deck details (YES).

Dont be afraid to sand the heck out of it.   You can sand all of that off and restain it.   The planks are thick enough.   Try t again but make sure you use a mixture of more natural stain vs golden oak.  I would start with something like a 20 % stain mixture to 80% natural.   See what happens.    You can remove that stained layer if you just sand it off.   Then sand it with a very fine 400 - 600 wet dry paper.   Then apply the stain mixture.

If you used the stain on basswood it may have been that the wood simply absorbed the stain differently at different points on its surface. This is something that happens with softer wood like basswood. It could be due to glue not being removed completely, but you can stain a piece of basswood with no glue at all and get a blotchy result. When staining basswood, I always use a pre stain conditioner to even out the wood surface so that it will absorb the stain evenly across the entire surface, thus giving a better result.

    Hello Wes,

Great to have you back. I might not be ready to take on a build like the Connie but I have been patiently awaiting your return to this excellent build log.

Finished the bowsprit today. I painted all the parts off the model to keep things looking as clean as possible.

I glued the "bowsprit step" in place as per the instructions. After sliding the end of the bowsprit into the step I slid the smaller brass band up against the stem. Once I was sure that there was no play fore and aft I spot glued the small brass band to the bowsprit. I then removed the bowsprit from the "bowsprit step" by pulling the bowsprit gently forward. Once removed, I applied more glue to the brass band and painted the bowsprit behind the brass band black. I then glued everything permanently into place.

Completed gaff assembly and its rigging. My girlfriend thinks the boat is too small and should be at least twice as large. She is afraid to touch it for fear of breaking something. So am I!

    Hi all -
Walt, I think I have restored the missing photos.  Stuntflyer, thanks for dropping by and for your kind words.  I would encourage you to start a build log for your project.  You will get lots of helpful advice and encouragement.  And you should also check out the build logs from KenW and Rafine.  Both are excellent.  They use better quality wood with natural finish and their results look great.

Its probably time for a progress report, although there has not been much progress.  I have been dealing with a carpal tunnel kind of wrist problem that limits what I can do.  In addition, I used a very old bottle of  Floquil "Swedish Oil" to varnish the masts... and it has taken WEEKS to dry.  I have attached some pictures.  The masts are stepped but not glued in.  They are not completed yet.  I need to do some painting and hang some blocks under the main top as well as other places.  The deck furniture is not glued on either.  I just placed it to give myself an idea of how she's looking.  The skylight is a "prototype" and will be replaced with something better in final.  I think the quartrdeck looks naked without it.  The stern lantern is just stuck on for now.  You get the idea.  But that's the progress to date.

With the platforms completed, the risers were next.  I used two spacers to make sure the distance between the cap rail and risers was correct.  The miniature clamps were a big help, although they did have a nasty habit of popping off, if I bumped them!

Not having the frieze strips glued in place also paid off here, since there was a good chance that they would have gotten damaged.  Never the less, I still managed to nick the red paint job on the cap rail in a few places.

After scribing and pre-bending the strips, I decided to put the simulated nail heads in before the risers were mounted.  The last photo shows the port riser and the front face of the storage locker in place.

Here's the platform cut to the required shape.  The port and starboard sides were beveled to a sharp edge on the underside.  I wanted to get as clean a fit as possible.  If you look closely, you can see a rectangular box marked on the middle plank.  This area will be removed, which is the reason that strip of wood on the underside of the platform did not go completely across.

It was quite common for these boats to be used to assist the parent ship in retrieving it's anchor.  This was done using a windlass like the one featured in the kit, and a davit that hung over the stern.  The next illustration was taken from The Arming and Fitting of English Ships of War 1600 - 1815 by Brian Lavery, and illustrates how this davit was positioned.  Note the notch in the bottom of the davit that fits over a pin located below the platform.

I made a mock-up of the davit, and placed it in position to see if the location was feasible.

It appeared to be reasonable, so the area was cut out, and a blackened brass pin, set in two blocks, was glued in the proper location.

At this point, I cut back the forward end of the platform, and installed a thin strip of wood, which I feel gives the assembly a more finished look.

Like the forward platform and floor boards, I used black paint brush bristles to simulate the nail heads.

Like the forward platform, I wanted to use a spacer of some sort to support the template at the correct height inside the hull.  This one turned out to be a little more involved, but it wasn't difficult to make.

A rough form of the template was laid on top of the spacer, and small pieces of card stock were glued in place to get the final shape.

The planks for the platform were joined together by cutting shallow grooves in the bottom of each plank, and gluing thin strips in the grooves.  Even though still quite thin, the assembly was fairly rigid.

I'll explain in my next post why I didn't run that middle strip all the way across.

The last photo shows the shape of the template transfered to the platform, which is ready for shaping.
