Kevin got a reaction from Landlubber Mike in Phoenix by Kevin - Panart - 1/84 - Ex Amerigo Vespucci - restarted June 2020
Good evening everyone
its that stage of the build where i am worried i am going to go out of my depth,
i have no decent instructions,
i have a rigging plan but no idea what size threads to use
no sail plan but 30 odd sails to make
and im absolutely loving it
i noticed that the build i am following had a lot of changes made during this stage onwards, where things had to be moved/adapted to get the rigging done, i certainly wont avoid that, but i am aware of it hence some items are still removable on the forecastle, to this end i have proceeded with the bowsprit
the chain i am using is 1.5 and 2mm jewellery chain, this will be pained later on, in these colours it looks like a cheap toy
yes i am making more work for myself but my plan is to proceed with that ever i have in my rigging threads, and see how it goes, then replace with my home made ropes, and tumbled blocks this will keep my interest going and allow me to show my mistakes as i go along
all the fittings being used now are now scratched, from 1.5mm brass tube and .4 brass wire, soldered where necessary
please feel free to scream at me if you see anything wrong, or better ways of doing things
question
what comes first, the chains or the stays

Kevin reacted to mtaylor in La Belle Poule 1765 by mtaylor - Scale 1:64 - POB - French Frigate from ANCRE plans
Here's the next carving. Tiny little guy (angel or maybe it's a cherub) who's supposed to be holding a small banner with the ship's name on it. Looks a lot better in person than he does on camera, IMO. This is the keeper... number 5 out of 8 tries. Coming up are the birds (ravens?) and acanthus branches (I think they are...) more tiny little carvings. Meantime, planking is continuing along with chasing/following around the doctors on my bad heart valve.

good evening everyone
most of the two lowered stbd side accommodation ladders are complete now, hope to finish them tomorrow
as the port side was a test, these went together much better and faster and in my eyes look better
made a set of jigs to ensure the platform supports were the same size,
lol its the danger time when i say to myself is it time for a redo of the port side

Good evening everyone
i think that the hull and fittings is now about 75-80% complete, every time i look at photos i see more to add, also now that im more confident with soldering, im happy to have a go at making bits
12 ships boats make up the compliment on here, these will be made up over the coming months, as much as i hate making them, one of the motor launces was started by me 12 years ago, at present being taken back to the frame
the accommodation ladders are now done, just the lifting gear/davits to be made up

This is impressive, Pat. Gluing a bit of rope for the clapper seems like great touch.

Thanks for all the likes, and the kind comments and suggestions Steven, Eberhard, Bruce, Chuck, Mark, Kevin, John and Ed.
Chuck: The trick I have found (at this scale) is resistance soldering. I find it much easier to control the heat and using different heat activated solders can usually get the smaller details in place without disturbing the rest. Now, if I can get my woodwork up to the same standard as yours I would be real happy.
Bruce and Ed, always appreciate you looking in and you much appreciated comments.
Eberhard, Kevin, John: My intention is to try and add a bell rope BUT at this scale it would only be 0.2mm diameter so definitely no plaiting/weaving or fancy knot work. IF I can drill a small hole in the clapper, I will simply add a small length of very fine scale rope with a knot in the end. Thanks for setting the challenge (I think 🤯)
cheers
Pat
