It's the camera shiloh. "In person" the lights are not that bright and do mimic the lantern light well. I am still thinking through this clear deck business. It has definitely skewed the overall look and I am not sure I like that yet. Thanks though. Dave

I did take a few night shots. They are a little grainy but the pics did come through. I do tend to agree with you billt: it is too clear. I will have to think about that a little. I will try the deck lines on scrap and see how they look.

Just to note: I still am working on the coamings and grates. That will also add to the overall look of this clear deck section.

Experiment 1 is done. I shaped the polycarbonate with simple tools and it shaped up fairly well. I then placed a little bit of deck furniture (masts, fife rails, gun, etc.) to get a feel for the look. Still not sure about it so please chime in guys. I think as the rest of the guns with their tackle, the rigging lines, and the rest of the deck furniture are placed it will give a "feel" for the forward spar deck presence even though it is invisible. I will turn the lamps on tonight and see how it looks with those as well.

The clear plastic 0.060" sheets arrived this week so it is time to start experimenting. I started with copolyesther. They are completely flat so my first job was to add some camber to the deck. I had an old semi-curved office sign that was pretty close to the correct angle so into the oven at 220 degrees it went and then reformed to the correct camber. A little shrinkage occurred but it did not change the plastic thickness that much (0.005"). I then traced out the deck pattern. Cutting has not been started because I don't have a scroll saw (yet). So far so good.... Before camber... After camber added... Roughly traced deck outline... I have some acrylic also but it seems a little unwieldy. I am still going to try using it as well but it cracks easily so far.

Well. That settles it for me. There is obviously nothing on that ship that could be considered stationary over the years. ...sorry to jack your thread here Jay.

Henry - have I got my bearings wrong or does that 1925 camboose face forward?

Sorry to hear about the chiseled finger Augie. The doctor in me is still trying to wrap a mind image around that... ...I love the stove too and hope it remains visible somewhat. Even if it doesn't the rest of your build is such beautiful work it may not be missed.

That is the aft powder room and (I think Evan's, aka force9) son. It is easily accessible from the aft starboard side of the orlop deck, Some original Constitution wood is still down there - so they say.

Just curious: where did you find plastic cannon balls - especially in that diameter?

I have been thinking ahead on the chains as well Evan. I will let you know if I have any epiphanies. I believe I will make an 'on-ship' jig for the lanyards. I want to attach the chains at their furthest point with a pin but I can't afford to drill the wrong spot and slice a fiber optic cable so that for me is a challenge.

Strike one. I went to Hobby Town tonight looking for 2 items: 0.060" clear styrene sheets and glue for clear plastic (I know I have seen it). Neither were available... I will try online...

@youngtiger. Thanks for the kudos. I do disagree though. There are so many fine plastic Connies on this and other sites. I know you are following some of them as well. My build is an amalgam of other builds with my ideas added. The final result will be unique but I will never be able to claim it was all mine. @ Augie. The clear deck, if it works, would only expose the underlying gun deck. I could not show the beam structure (I don't think) without defeating the purpose of clarifying the deck. That will have to wait for my next build. Evan (force9) is doing a fantastic job of showing these beams.

I have been putting so much effort into this gun deck that I find it increasingly troublesome to think of shutting it completely in...I did not believe I would feel this way and in fact previously had no misgivings about it at all. I think seeing the final result is giving me these misgivings. So now, at this stage in the build no less, I am musing ways to expose this deck somehow. Kimathm (on this forum) had suggested re-doing the deck in clear plastic. The thought was a possibility with styrene. Although the entire deck seems a bit much I am seriously thinking of working a piece up and replacing the fore portion of the Revell spar deck. That area has a lot of gun deck furniture and could probably be shaped. That would expose the camboose, cable bitts, and more. A manger might have to be worked up and maybe even a messenger cable. Thinking... Thinking... Dave

I have that too. It is mostly a collection of plans from the 1920's refit. These are the same plans that match the current configuration as well. Dave

I am not sure where the reference is located but jbshan (on this forum) had 4 fire pumps with 1 each on the fore and main channels port and starboard. So these firefighting type pumps were external to ships bulwarks.

The riding bitts and the galley (camboose) position are interesting in the second drawing. It is not between them at all.

I agree - probably powder shuttles. Our resident MSW expert Henry (popeye2sea) would likely know for sure. He has been in all parts of the ship and knows them well. Give him a PM and ask. Dave

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
