Hi Mark, I just received the plexi glass case for my Vasa model. I still have to mount the model to the case base and make a name plate then I am done! I plan to start the stage coach later this summer, while I investigate my next ship build options! Frank

Hi Michael, Great job on a difficult area (the upper railing system!). Make sure you trial fit the belaying pins with the coiled rope attached in order to make sure it fits next to those vertical railing posts! I had a few close calls on mine! I second George's comments above!!! Frank

Thanks for your comments George! I actually went to the Peobody Senior Center here north of Boston. They have some great equipment there and many knowledgable , helpful, and fun people who assisted me in making the trim pieces! Frank

Hello, I have been working on and finished up the base of the case for my Vasa model. In a previous log post, I uploaded some photos of the pieces of the base I made. Here they are again in the 1st 2 photos. I stained them and then put on a few coats of Polyurethane. On the plywood board, I wrapped a large piece of black felt and stapled it to the back side. Now I fitted the felt covered plywood into the slots of the end pieces, glued the whole thing together and held it together with some clamps until it dried. On the backside, I screwed on some angle braces for extra protection and I will add some felt pads on the 4 corners, so I don't scratch the furniture it will sit on. Yesterday, I ordered the 3/16" thick plexiglass that will ever and protect the model. Next step is to make a name plate stand and have a nameplate made. Thanks for visiting the log, Frank

Hi Michael! Sorry about the confusion! I should have been clearer! I was trying to convey my thoughts on the excellent mouse that you made in the previous page and the "yikes" comment I made is for your drive to make it even better by wanting to try the other technique above! Great job! Frank P.s. I am up in Maine this weekend and it is supposed to get down to -15 degrees tonight!

Mark, Very, very nice job on the windows! Is this Kristal Klear product the similar to the Testor product you gave me information on for my lantern? Thanks, Frank

Frank Apple user for many years. In fact when I first got an email account to use with my first PowerBook I had to think of an email user name. MD(1400cs Micheal, The mystery of your log name is solved! Great thinking on your part! I still have my @.mac.com email! I wished I kept my original Macintosh SE from the 80's . Oh well! Frank

Hola Frank: I just can say in spanish: Realmente HERMOSO y ESPECTACULAR!!! Muchos saludos, Karl Hi Karl! Thanks for you kind words! Yes, I had to get out my Spanish dictionary! And thanks for your previous help with the sail dimensions and rigging help! Frank

Nice job Mark! I now see what you meant by the area under the quarter deck being mostly hidden. A shame that the nicely done gallery windows are mostly hidden! Frank

Hi Jan, I ordered the Corel Lantern from "cornwallmodelboats.co.uk" If you go to their Web site you should find it. Reference # AMNF022 CF22 Conical Period Stern Lantern with Side Bracket 30MM My cost was 8.43 British pounds plus 2.02 pounds shipping I hope this helps! Frank

Continuing on with the lantern: I bought some thin styrene sheets and I cut out windows that matched the size and shape of the red ones that came with the lantern. Next, using some plastic window screen, I glued the screen to the windows using the Testor clear glass glue. (Thank you Mark for suggesting this glue!!) I cut away the excess screen and glued the windows to the lantern. Finished lantern mounted onto the stern with the supports Well thats it on the ship! It's been a long a fun journey. My next step is to finish the base for the case. I will begin to stain and finish the base and assemble it. I will post some photos soon. Thanks again for the "likes" and the visits to the log! Frank

Hello, The last item to finish up on my Vasa model was the stern lantern. After looking around, I ended up selecting a Corel lantern I found on the Internet. This is how it looked when it came. The first thing I did was to disassemble the pieces and remove the red windows and the ornamentation around the stem. Next I drilled a hole into the stern post of the Vasa and did a trial fit of the lantern. Now I gold leafed the lantern to match the figurines

Hi Michael, Nice detail (rigging) work on the eye! Looks like you are making good progress! Frank

George, You are too kind! I've learned a lot thru this process and it has been fun! Frank

Thanks Michael! I am 12 miles north of Boston, so we will only get a dusting from the storm. Most of the damage will be further south, NYCity to Philly and DC. I think we dodged a bullet this time! Frank

Here are some photos of the finished rigging (overview shots) Only i thing left to do on this project, the stern lantern. I will start looking at my options for this. Almost at the end! Thanks for visiting, Frank

Continuing on: Next I installed the foresail sheet lines. The lines go thru the block (see left arrow) Then down thru one of the triple block assembly (built into the railing). Now the foresail tack lines. Attached to the sail (see right arrow on photo) Thru the hole under the beak and back into the cleats on the bow railing. The last lines rigged are the lower spritsail sheets. This line comes from the corner of the sail, thru an eyelet on the deadeye platform to a block. Then another line goes from the block, into the triple railing block and finally onto the cleat. View of lines terminating on the cleats midship
