Shotlocker reacted to Winnie in Titanic 1912 by Winnie - Trumpeter - 1/200 - PLASTIC
So got a tiny bit completed on B deck, not much to do, 2nd class restaurant and a couple promenades. and the deck below the bridge. had to work to get the deck to fit, minor surgery. Also fitted the PE sheets for the rails on the outside bulkhead, but only the back plate, the spars will have to happen AFTER the decs are inserted. Pictures are bad, because I was in a rush...
Waterways still need a dash of black there! and the ladders came off the rear bulkhead, those will be reattached shortly, with the last deck equipment needed.
Shapeways bridgefront there.
The doors seem very red, they look more brown in real life.
Cheers!

Shotlocker got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Chinese Junk 1880 by Ferrus Manus - FINISHED - Imai - 1/60 - PLASTIC - My First Non-Western Ship
Great work, Ferrus. I built two Imai kits in the late '70's - the Santa Maria (photo attached) and the Catalan ship.
Thoroughly enjoyed building both, especially the Catalan ship. It's a shame the company went out of business.
I sold the Santa Maria model to an Italian restaurant in the Denver area and sometimes wonder if they still have
it. The Catalan ship went on a voyage to an unknown destination, so I hope it still exists.

Gary

In the past, I've seen it for sale on eBay, but it was hell expensive. Haven't looked recently but you may want to check
to see once in while. Maybe someday a company will reissue it from the old molds? One can hope, eh?

Scott,
Even now I vividly recall struggling with installing those kit-supplied ratlines; I wasn't happy with them at all,
but, in those days, there weren't many sources of information on model building available so, as a kid,I went
with what was provided. It's great to see you're not using them! Alas, I used the darned things again years later
on the Constitution build but managed to do a bit better with them. It's certainly a blessing to have a site such
as this, these days, to have access to so many excellent knowledgeable modelers ideas on how to authentically
recreate these sailing vessels. Your ship is looking great, looking forward to seeing the finished vessel!

Scott,
I began building that model when I was I was twelve, finished it when I was 13 (1960...whew!), then won a
1st place trophy with it the next year at a USNR model contest. Amazingly, it's still intact. I just dusted it off
last month and all of the masts and spars are in excellent condition, perhaps because for many years the
ship was stored in a wooden crate during my many moves around the country. I'm happy that you're restoring
yours and hope that one of our sons will someday treasure mine as well.
Best Regards,

Big thanks to all for your comments.
Part 13
The Case Completion
The Winter of '22-'23. Rains storms, high winds, and flooding rumbled through California. After years of drought, Mother Nature more than made up for it in three monthes.
In my drawings I planned to have the the left facing side hinged for access. I realized the arc of the travel would be too high and awkward. In addition the weight of the panel would put too much stress on the whole structure.
In order to keep the frames the same dimension all around I designed and built a corner mockup, seen below, with interlocking cuts. The outside piece remains in place as part of the case, while inside piece is the removable frame and its plex.
Now one may ask, how do you remove and replace the access panel? On each corner there is a quarter radious tab that turns 90 degrees to release the panel. With the two knobs pull and loosen the bottom, then with one hand hold the top and remove. Same way in reverse to install.
The final touch was engraving the builder's plate. When it finally has a patina I will polish the surface so the letters show up better.
Thank you all for showing interest and for your valued comments.

Shotlocker reacted to tartane in A 15th century cannon as found on the Mary Rose. Scale 1 : 1. Construction, description and research.

The gun carriage is made in a carpenter’s workshop. The medieval Dutch name was "lade" (drawer). It is carved out of an oak tree trunk. The barrel is then placed in a semi-circular floor in which the spaces for the rings are also saved. That way, the barrel couldn't move on a shot, the rings stopped it. As can be seen on many old depictions and also on the recovered cannons of the Mary Rose, the barrel was tied to the carriage with rope. In this way, the gun could be taken apart and transported on a campaign. The wheels could also be removed.
Behind the breech the wedges. In this way, the breech could be clamped into the back of the barrel.
The carpenter warned me that the carriage would be very heavy. I did the math and indeed it would weigh about 650 kilos. Too heavy to carry him up the stairs in the tower to the place where he will stand. We decided that he would cut the carriage in the lenget into two parts. That sounds crazy, but I can imagine that this was also done in the 15th century to facilitate transport. The two parts are then attached to each other by large bolts fitted with wedges.
Behind the wedges a white ball, that's the cannonball. I carved it out of a slab of aerated concrete. In reality, it was natural granite or something like that. The ball still has to be provided with the correct color. In granite, the bullet would weigh about 500 grams, so a pound.

Shotlocker got a reaction from Old Collingwood in What plastic ship kits have you done?
I've built many of 'em: 1/96 Cutty Sark (now a dis-masted hulk), Thermopylae, Constitution; Heller Soleil Royal (unfinished), Le Chebec
(nearly finished), Thornier Armor; Imai Catalan ship and Santa Maria, small Revell Constitution, Bounty, Golden Hinde, and Chas. W. Morgan
plus many steel-hulled ships, submarines, and work-type ships. I have to say that I enjoy working with that medium as much as working with
wood models...just love the look of ships, always have.
