You may have a small work space but it looks like you make the best of it. I wish I were that organized.

I can't imagine taking on the task of crewing the launch. I will be thrilled with a clean planking job on mine. It sure is a slow but fun process though.

When you build your form give some thought to putting the sheer tabs on after it's all faired in. They really make to hard to do a clean job when in place. Of course it could just be my lack of experience too.

Another vote for a planking video. The results are amazing and you make it look fairly easy.

You guys sure have some good solutions. I opted for a painters easel on wheels with a white board on it. My only mistake was not getting a magnetic white board. I may end up replacing it with one.

I think this fits in the Naval History section. One of my other hobbies is coin collecting and thought you all might find this interesting. They are a bit scarce but not rare. Does anybody else have any ship or Navy related coins or medals to share? I have a few others I can post if anybody has an interest.

It's been a while since I have been at the work bench or the computer but I have made a bit of progress on the Launch. I have started the rigging and got a new toy. I got this serving machine from one of sponsors, Domanoff's Workshop. I know there is very little rigging on this boat to justify a serving machine but what a great tool it is. Very well made and works like a champ.

I hope to get the rigging done in the next few days and move on to the other details.

First I want to say how glad I am that I removed the old planking. The new is far from perfect but way better. I'm still working on the stern which has had its own issues. I think I finally got it figured out after 3 times.

I was hoping for an opinion from you guys though. After so many do overs the planking on the stern has gotten thin. I really don't want to rip it out and start over. Would it be appropriate to paint the stern planks and if so what would be an acceptable color?

When I look at my pictures ompaired to some other builds I realize what a wood butcher I am. It's getting better though.

I've started making some progress on the planking. It's not perfect but not too bad either. I'm sure learning as I go though.

I went ahead and bent the wales. I had some Swiss Pear that was the perfect size so I went with that. I just soaked them and clamped them in place to dry so far. No glue yet so if you guys see something thats off please let me know.

Tim, I can't thank you enough for posting these links. I know so little about my fathers war service but have a great interest in learning. I do apologize for taking your Build Log on a tangent though. I am looking forward to seeing your Liberty Ship come together.

    Tim,

OK, here is a list of the ships my father served on with date and place of discharge from the ship. He joined July 27, 1942 which was one month after his 16th birthday. I'm not sure this list is complete but he did spend several months in London after his ship was damaged on a trip.

    1. S.S. Sahale out of New York August 24, 1942 and returned to Boston Oct 21, 1942. I believe this ship was a Hog Islander built in 1918. He was aboard during this Convoy PQ 18 as shown on this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convoy_PQ_18

    2. S.S. George F. Patton out of Portland Main June 1, 1943 and return New York Aug 9, 1943. I think this is a Liberty Ship

    3. S.S. Casimir Pulaski out of Boston March 16, 1944 and return New York Sept 20, 1944. I think another Liberty Ship

    4. S.S. George F. Patton out of Boston Nov 24, 1944 and return New York Jan 25, 1945

    5. S.S. Marine Devil out of Boston Aug 15, 1945 and return Newport News, VA Oct 9, 1945. I think this one was a troop transport.

If you would like scans of any of the papers for your research just let me know. I am happy to share any info that I have.

Tim, I have not taken much time to look but it seems like photos of specific Liberties or other wartime merchant ships are rare. I have not been able to find pictures of any of the 5 or 6 different ships my father sailed on. I know from his papers that he sailed from several east coast ports but the only way I know where they went is from him telling me. I guess the destination was secret. He did go to Murmansk but the Russians would not let them go ashore.

Count me in. My father served aboard merchant ships including 2 different Liberty Ships during WW II. His ship took on wounded at Normandy. I still have all his shipping papers and plan to do some research on his ships.

The photo below shows the thole pins on the contemporary model.  There is a discrepancy between this model and the other contemporary model.  This one has an extra row or two more pairs of thole pins than the other model.  I opted to go with fewer.  I made my thole pins from boxwood but you guys can easily replace with wire if you wanted.  I took a 3/64" x 3/64" strip and rounded it off in my Dremel.  I dont like the way the wire takes paint and because of this large scale I opted for wood instead, but this means you must also round off your stock in a Dremel as well.  If that is too much of a hassle though then wire can be used in its place....probably 16 gauge or 18 gauge.

I drilled holes along the cap rail with a #55 drill bit and glued them in place.  Then they were painted red.  But you could leave them natural too....if you use the boxwood that comes with the kit.

THIS COMPLETES THE HULL!!!  Except for the oars but I will do that after I rig it......So let the masting and rigging begin.
