GREAT JOB!

Wow Elijah, you have really done some fantastic work here.  An outstanding first effort (waaaay better than mine) and the the fact that you stuck with it, didn't get discouraged and came through it all with a great looking Phantom should be an inspiration to all of us!  As others have stated, your patience, attitude and work ethic shows a maturity and strength of character not often found in young people today.  I'm sure whatever you chose to do in life, you will be successful at it.

Thank you for being willing to share your first build experience with everyone.  I look forward to following your Philidelphia build and I'm sure it will be fantastic.

Hello again all! I'm guessing you're surprised to see another update on this log. Really, this is just the best space for the case I'm building for the phantom. I have been working on the case off and on for he past few months. I bought the plexiglass and built the base, and I'm nearing the point of assembling the plexiglass. I built a simple 90° jig to hold the plexiglass while cementing. I have yet to buy a cement, and I'm still trying to find a good space to cement he plexiglass. I'm thinking in he back yard would be a well enough ventilated space, but if you think not, let me know! I also bought some polish for the plexiglass, as it is covered in miniscule scratches. Anyway, here are some photos!

Elijah, your corner jig and plastic polish hit the bullseye. Good work.

As far as a plexiglass glue, look for Plastruct Plastweld (white label) or Weldene (orange label). Also Ambroid Proweld (white label).  And they will glue Plexiglas or Lucite. Read the labels, these use chloroform as their base. Means they are "hot" or work fast. So work outside; don't want to tick the rest of the family off when using this stuff.

Good luck.

Elijah:

You need to make sure that the joints do not touch the wood.  If they do, capillary action can smear glue to any contacting surface.  The professional jigs have a gap in the corners where each plane of the jig meets another.  A 1/8" wide x 1/8" deep rabbit on each piece of the jig before you assembled it would do the job.  If it's just screwed together no problem - unscrew, make the rabbit cuts and reassemble.

Otherwise you will need to secure something to the jig pieces to provide a space at each intersection of the wood pieces.  You need to keep it square so cover the entire wood surface except for the gap at the joints.

If you can disassemble it but can't make the rabbit cuts, bring it to my shop and we can get it done.

I'm not sure I can disassemble it. It's glued pretty tight.

I'm wondering, if I cut some squares from a length of wood and positioned them on the jig so that it would raise the plexiglass from the wooden jig, would that work? That way, none of the gluing surfaces would be touching anything.

I decided not to print out the practicum, but instead I downloaded it to my iPad. I have also run into a couple problems and concerns. The first thing is that the hull templates are too large. In the below pictures, they overlap and the lines don't line up.

I noticed that tonight. The hull templates are too large.

Yes, I remember it was fairly annoying. I think I ended up printing a copy of the plans and cutting out my templates from that to get the right sizes.
