Kevin, those look awesome! Looks to me like your skills are growing quickly. Very helpful video too. Finally, I wanted to thank you for recommending the Sampson Boat Company YouTube channel. Leo is amazing and one learns a ton about ship construction watching his progress with Tally Ho.

Nice job Kevin. I've not seen silver soldering done where the solder was sweated on one piece first (like tinning in soft soldering). Also, that large metal nut you are using to secure one piece acts as a heat sink drawing heat away from the joint. That's why those ceramic pins you ordered work so well.

I would start by making brass rings. The more you make the better the joints will be as you refine your technique. I agree with you that you can't accurately hang the pintle straps until the gudgeon straps are in place. I would hang the top and bottom pintles first then fill in the middle three.

Hi Greg

sweating solder joints seems to be a very common way jewlers add parts  when building up a piece. Unfortunately i don't get the pins until December when my daughter comes to visit. By then i should be much better. I was able to epoxy the top gudgeon in place and it should stay firmly in place. Just completed the new rudder and the table joint came out fantastic. I used a perminant Sharpie to darken the joint and there was no running.

Watching your videos on youtube. I haven't made it to this part yet but it looks great.

I always find moments like those to be a good time to practice all my sailor words 🙄

Now that is roughing it.

I feel so bad for you having to survive all that sunshine and warm ocean breezes.

(Had to put on my long johns, scarf, toque, winter coat, heated gloves, just to check the mail box today)

Very informative video, Kevin! I’ve purchased a couple of the Jim Byrnes cutting plates and had wondered which direction to pull through. Thanks, as usual, for your helpful insights and Happy New Year!

Kevin, A small supplement to your very good treenail video...I mount the draw plate in a bench vise and pull the bamboo through with a set of parallel pliers (they do not crush the ends like regular pliers do).
