July's stuff came a little early.

A bunch of 0.5x5mm strips, a cannon and decorations:

And the planking of the stern continues:

Pucko,

Peter sent a photo for another good look at door spacing. I was looking for other things in my files and ran across this one - then thought for you.

If you don't have this one it may be of help as well

oops it was almost 9MBs Glad I noticed I resized it. 780 kbs should give you a lot of definition.

Thanks Michael!

The photo will be helpful.

Now my main problem is that curve of the planks towards the aft of the hull. DeAgostinis second planking wood is 0,5X5mm and impossible to bend upwards without twisting. A real headscratcher for me now...

Pucko,

Post a specific photo of what you exactly mean. - and pos. one of the planks as well. I'm sure that members here will have some ideas.

I have certainly been helped a lot. I may even have an idea as well.

I looked back up to your stern photos and was not sure what you are trying to work out.

Cheers,

Michael

With regards to bending the planking sideways:

As you can see on my picture above, it is possible to run the planks in such a way that you do not need to bend the planks much at all at the stern.

The real area to keep an eye on is the bow. Quite a bit of bending is required here. In fact if were to do this again, for the bow, I would cut curved planks..

It's hard to get a picture from the museum that does not exhibit fish-eye effects. (for obvious reasons you cannot take a picture from a distance)
So here's an older picture:

This is what I did for plank run at the stern:

hi Michael and Peter, Thanks for the input.

Here is the problem:

The line drawn is the curve that the planks should follow.

IMG_1109.jpg.90e3c60cab656b076adb19b99b79be2e.jpg

And this happens when I try to bend the thin strips "upwards"

IMG_1110.jpg.ef9f82a4cbdbc5a593bf9bc4609014f8.jpg

With the thicker planks (2mm) this was no problem since I could use the heatbender across the plank and get that minimal curve. But not on the 0,5mm.

Hi Jan, Well, I don't know. But it might be the only way. I don't have any clamps that's big enough to go over the hull and if I use the planking screws the hull will be perforated.

maybe just use CA to pin them down?

Or ease up the curve a little and hope that it won't show after the hulls painted.

But the curve has to line up with the upper 7 planks aft wards that should be klinker laid.

Hello Peter

I do not know when the wales will come. You only know from month to month what is to be done. No indication on what is to come...

I have never thought about clamping them together! Could be a good idea! I'll try that tonight. :D

First of, great build and great log :)

I have been tempted to build the Vasa since I was about teen years old and visited the museum and saw the 1:10 model. However I have more or less no experience building wooden ships so I have never dared to try any Vasa kit. But about a month ago I found out about the deagostini kit and the instructions seems very clear. Even if I hate to wait for stuff the subscription model allows me to cancel the subscription if I feel like the model is too hard. So I have now subscribed and I’m waiting for my first delivery (according to Edition Atlas it should have arrived yesterday but still no luck).

After following your log I understand that it’s a good idea to wait to start the build until you have received a couple of shipments. How long do you recomend me to wait? Keep in mind that I’m really eager to start the build :)

Hello Morgan thanks for dropping by.

I would not start building the hull until issue 24. That would be shipment number 7. Then the main hull would be complete. even better would be to wait until issue 40, shipment 11. Then you'll have the false deck as well. But I understand that's unrealistic. ;)

Just try and wait as long as you can.

(you can always PM me if you want to use Swedish)

Thanks for the advise Pucko.

I’m going to try and wait for shipment 7 before I begin building the hull. Guess I have some decorations to paint while I wait ;). I also found a old Billing boats model of Gothenburg (ostindienfararen) that bought maybe 10 years ago but since I didn’t gather any information about how to build a wooden model beforehand I mistreated it quite badly. I have now removed the planking I did (not that much) and started to sand the frames (no didn’t do that the first time :default_wallbash:) to hopefully get a better result this time.

Regards

I would really like to do Ostindiefararen. I had a job on her for about a year. Great ship. have been looking for a kit of her for a long time.

The closest you come now is Euromodels The Falmouth, a Brittish East Indiaman that one could modify...

Have you contacted the consortium that build Gothenburg?

You might be able to buy plans from them.

Nirvana and Peter: As I have worked there I know them, (or knew them, they just reorganized the consortium and though the existence of the ship is secured, she will never sail again.)  but I have no room or tools to do a scratch build. And I can NOT afford The Falmouth, way out of my economic situation. :(

But, I have a lot of other stuff to build :)

I have now finished planking the stern

IMG_1124.thumb.jpg.487c867507aa06f08bd107bfaa56e032.jpg   IMG_1125.thumb.jpg.ff6f7eb8d50cf3cd050ad92070c0c4c4.jpg

The arching parts are too thick as you pointed out Peter, But it is layers of ply and hullplanks + the second layer planks. I could sand it thinner from the inside, but that's the ply layer that holds the first layer planks (and also I'm too lazy to do that :)) and sanding on the outside would change the form of the hull. Hopefully the decorations will hide it a little.

IMG_1126.thumb.jpg.e957ebdd7fecd6432a40e67ba364e732.jpg

Sanding, paint and a shitload of decorations will probably hide the little gaps etc.

If it's according to the instructions, it should be ok?
Have you received examples of the arch sculptures to try out?
There should be room for three more arch sculptures under this overhang..

alternatively, one could omit one without too much visual impact

Just ordered the same kit, this thread will be enormously help full.
I have only glanced at the comments in this tread, is there any issues that I need to know of?

Saw the problem with the lining of the gun ports, one thing to really look into.

When I start on this kit it will be my third, but I'm planing to parallell build Vega with Vasa.

One big question, is it worth the money?

I also build the kit. At the moment it is on hold since i just collect the parts. I want to build it in my way and not according to deAgostinis weird approach. I think it is worth the money (still very expensive) but the decorations are beautiful. I will put more money on it since I want to replace the second planking layer. The quality of the wood in that case is a negative part of the kit in my opinion.

I apologize for poor English.

Your work with the model was a model for me. Now I have to be alone. We are only publishing the 50th issue of Vasa in Poland.
