Hi Mobbsie, as you know being good is not fun....lol, but I will be a pig tomorrow for sure!  It looks like the Harpoon count is around 16-18.  I have 5-6 that will hang under the roof on the Shelter, and 3-4 that will go on the whaleboats as they are rigged out.  With 7 whaleboats, there will be 2 that are mounted upside down on the roof, and then 5 will be hanging from the davits.  Each whaleboat will be a small model in itself.  Lots of work.  There are also several other items that will have to be made for the boats.  Saltyseadog, a member here, has a very good 1/25 scale whaleboat that is posted on the Forum that I will probaby use as a guide, however I don't believe I will be able to recreate as much detail as he did, and most wouldn't be necessary on my boats in that they will be incorporated into the overal ship and not a independant model.....he even went so far as to scrimshaw the knife handles....outstanding model.  I'm glad I was directed to it by some of the members.  Pictures to follow as I get them done, but it might be a week or so.

Thanks Augie, Isn't it interesting how many different types of skills are required to build a model ship. I don't guess I ever thought about it before.  Maybe we are a "jack of all trades"?

Hi John,

The detail in your ship is amazing and I've enjoyed following your build. It's almost a universal given for me, no matter what build I look at, regardless if it's related to my build, I always learn something.

Hello John,

You are welcome!  I'm looking forward in seeing your harpoons completed!  I figured that the more info I can give is also for the benefit of possible others.

All the extra details on your model, or on any model, makes the model!  I guess that's why I am adding much more to my sub model then originally planned.

Give my best to Diane and happy thanksgiving,

Cheers,

Hello piggy John and piget Diane,

Did some work in my shipyard this morning and could not resist trying my hand in making a harpoon.  First I used a 0.5 mm brass rod and peened the end flat and then filed a point to it.  Problem was that the shaft end was rounded and i could not get it squared let alone indented to make it look more like an arrow head.  Oh I guess with some more fiddling or a retry I could probably make a usable harpoon but .5 mm is below your scale anyhow.

Next I took a 0.9 mm brass rod and the same happened there.  Too rounded at the shaft end .  I guess with some more smashing with the gebanger and the pin punch I could probably get somewhere but I figured that it would not look good enough and too time consuming to make 24 of them.

So, what I did was cut a small piece of 0.1 mm brass sheet or ship stock and soldered it to the flat spot of the brass rod.  I then slowly filed it to a point and recessed the part at the shaft end with a knife shaped file.  To eliminate frustration my recommendation is to do the same.  It only takes about 15 to 20 minutes to make a harpoon.  If your harpoon point looks different, no prob, just model it to look like what you need.

post-1399-0-17667500-1385667152_thumb.jpg

arrow on the left is from 0.5 mm brass rod, the one on the right from 0.9 mm brass rod with 0.1 mm brass sheet soldered and shaped to the flattened end of the rod.

The same as above but with a an Exacto blade for scale.

Cheers,

Piet, The Flying Dutchman.

Looking really good, John. Let me do some digging - I recall an article in (I think) an old NRJ about building a harpoon. Will see if I can find it tomorrow.

Hi Lawrence, well, it seems that each whaleboat had 5 on them, so I have 5 boats exposed and 2 turned upside down and stowed, so that makes 20 and then there are about 5-7 of them stowed under the shelter roof that I still have to make so that makes 25-28.  Now once I start on the boats I'll determine what works with the scale and stock them accordingly.  There are a lot of things that go into the boats, which really make them a build of their own....tiny repetitious models.....we'll see.....

Either way your doing an excellent job with the detail. Like remco says each part is a kit of it's own, and your showing that by doing the extra detail work. Keep the pictures coming. How many you got left to make?

Hi Piet, they're still waiting for you to make them.....ha ha.....seriously, a few chores needed around the house is taking precedence....must keep the Admiral happy, so there has been some delays on this end.  Later in the evenings I have been able to do a little work.  I managed to build the Fife Rail and get the Bilge Pumps mounted.  Pictures a little later today when everything is dry.  Just a little progress, but it is progress......so the enquiring minds will have to wait a bit.....

Thanks to all that contributed pictures, articles and instructions on how to build the Harpoons......very much appreciated.  That's one of the cool things about the forum is that help is just a matter of asking.  Thanks Mates......

Hi Joe, (Wacko), the plans and reference info seem to indicate there are 5 harpoons, lances, and hooks per boat.  I only have 5 boats visible that will be hanging from the davits.  2 boats are stowed upside down on the shelter roof which I haven't built yet.  There are also 4-5 harpoons that hang underneath the the roof on yet unbuilt racks.  So there's a bunch of them.....Depending on how they look on the boats will determine how many I will put inside them as there is a lot of other stuff that goes into them as well.....buckets, mast and sail, buckets, and more so should they start getting too full I will limit them to what just looks good instead of historically correct.  Don't want to create the image that if you launch one with 5 men in there also, that they would sink because of being overweight.....we'll see.....
