John, I used either Floquil or Pollyscale paints on the Morgan ( Pollyscale is the acrylic version of Floquil. I now use only Pollyscale.). The yellow is actually darker than it shows in the photos, although not as dark as yours. It's been some years and I don't recall the color that I used.

I've painted the white trim on the hull s well as painted over the gray on the waterways with a brownish mixture.  I think it looks like weathered wood which is the affect I'm looking for.

The colors are really nice - good job on the trim!  The stars also came out well, though honesty compels me to note that I had nothing to do with that whale hunt!  They look good anyway!!!

When you copper the hull will you use tape or small plates?

Hi David, I'm thinking I will use tape, but cut it into small plates and put some rivets in it. I plan to experiment a little and see what I like best. The tape would probably be easier, but the plates will look better if I can keep them straight. I need to read the tutorials on it.

There's a tutorial by Gene Bodnar on copper plating with tape using nothing by scissors and a pounce wheel.  I used it and it worked pretty well.

Augie, that has been my primary thoughts on this method. I haven't looked back, but did you take pictures as you did this? Also, what did you use to adhere them to the hull?

The traditional glue is contact cement which can be messy.  Several members of my modeling clubs swear by CA.  Which ever you use make up a test sheet first to see if you like it.

David, I have both so I would be prepared.  I use CA quite regularly, so I also like it, however I have never plated a hull with copper.  The plans call for 7/32" x 3/4" plates.  I assume it's the correct size, however I read a comment somewhere else on a ship of 1/64 scale, that the strips were too big.  So I guess this is open for interpretation.  Any suggestions would be welcome.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, John.  The method uses 1/4" copper tape which is self-adherent.  On my 1:64 the individual plates are 11/16" long but they're laid down in lengths of 4 plates each strip being 1/4 by 44/16".  There are some photos on pages 1 and 2 of my log but the narrative was lost back on MSW 1.

 

The tutorial gives the specifics.

Yup.  Been over a year since I did it and things are holding up like new.....except the color is finally darkening.  I think some folks have put some sealant over their copper tape but I'm not sure how that works out.

Not a lot of progress so far today. Preparing to plank the anchor deck, so, I installed the eyes, bullseyes and actually ran my first rigging......this being the Mainstay lines, which attach to the bullseyes and go through holes in the anchor deck then up and around the mainmast. That was interesting, actually quite different than with plastic because of the strength of everything...not fragile yet. Then after finding some nice chain to use for the anchor chains (the kit chains were way too small, I cut and fixed the chains in their proper places, through the anchor deck and out for the anchors to attach to later on. The chains will wrap around the windlass 3 times, then lay on the deck back to the anchor chain pipes located just aft of the Mainmast and not yet installed. They will then go in the holes made in the pipes to below decks, probably into a chain locker.

For anyone interested, attached is a video of the re-launching of the Morgan today 21 July 13.  This marked the 172 anniversary (I think that is right, I'll verify and edit if necessary) or the original launch of the ship.  This has so far been a 5 year restoration process.  It was re-christened by the great, great, great granddaughter of Charles W. Morgan.  The ship will sail again in the late spring of 2014.  This was cool to watch, and I'm sorry I missed it, as I won't be there for a couple of weeks. It's surreal to watch something like this, where one is building a scale model of history, yet can observe this in real time today.  Amazing.

Thank you Sjors, this is very true....any progress small or large is progress.  Well, my posts might start getting to be fewer now, or at least slow down on building as my RV is in and I pick it up in a few hours.  I'll bring it home, get loaded up and trying to leave by Wednesday or Thursday.  Lot's of "honey-do's"  now.  Getting time to put the spiders on furlough for a bit.  Actually, I think sequester might be the word....

Hi Dave, yes, I wish I could have been there yesterday. If my RV would have come in as scheduled I wuld have been. Looks like another delay today, as when I went to pick it up there was interior damage caused by the dealer, that now has to be repaired. They left the dinette table down when they closed the slide out, and it damaged the stove, kitchen counter and 2 drawers as well as the table top itself. Another delay of 3-10 days. I think I might be snakebit on this thing, or maybe we're not even supposed to be taking this trip, I don't have a clue, and the Admiral, bless her heart is getting upset with all the lies, and delays. Oh well, maybe someday we can hit the road. This ordeal started the end of April.
