Ok life's taken a few turns sideways lately. Had the place all packed up ready to move and our dreams were taken away............so after some time got a spot to work on the ship again. I've glued in the upper stern and soon planking will begin.

 

Oh and Kieth (themadchemist) inspired me to to put pirates onto my ship so here's my first try at painting the scale ones I ordered........

Ok a long session with not much progress but the back piece broke on me twice before I got it in right

 

 

Then I put some hull strakes on....got 4 on each side.

David, I'm a little concerned about the nails in the planking.  I've seen this before in OcCre kits (specifically my Ulises Tug) and frankly I didn't know how to handle it.  I believe the instructions tell you to complete the hull, with the nails, and then sand the heads off the nails and make the hull smooth.  I couldn't envision how this might be possible so I went with just a standard hull planking technique using glue to hold the planks in place.  It came out fine.

 

Believe me, I'm not trying to corrupt your adherence to the instructions.  But, since you're dealing with a single planked hull, you might want to think about it now.  Don't be afraid to ignore my concern.

It looks like you have a "wave" between frame 3 and 4

Maybe you gan fill frame 4 a little?

So the planking goes smoother.

Otherwise you need a lot of filler!

I agree with Augie,

 

I think ( hope ) that you are using glue under the planks

After the glue is dry it is very easy to remove the nails.

A little pin under the nail hat and pull him out.

After that use some filler to cover the nail holes.

That's what I did.

 

 

And Augie,

 

I think you are wrong by thinking that it is single planking…It's double or David has change that.

That's also possible…….

I know that a lot of kits from OcCre are double planking.

Maybe the first ones are single…..

Yes, the Tug Ulises.  They actually told you to drive in the nails then sand the heads off and you would be done.

Maybe they don't use glue but only nails?

They are Spanish……strange people

The instructions do state to file them down......I was thinking just use a nail punch and drive them a bit deeper then fill and sand? Dunno if it will work but will try.....and yes this is double planked so any mistakes will be covered by the 2 nd thin layer

Please remove the nails !

When you put filling over it, maybe you still see the difference.

Use a vice pin to pul the nail a little up and then remove it.

Then you can cover the nail hole with filler.

Hmmmm remove the nails for sure huh? Well I will give it a try after it dries in a couple days and hope I do not pull them all off lol

the instructions for the AL virginia where the same file the nail heads of afterwards. i did manage it but wiht the second plankign i had a few poking through. also the brass nails provided are not reall brass just brass coated. filing them down shows the inner iron which i have been told could cause wood rot.

 

so yes while you stil can remove the nails after the glue has dried

When you finished the planking you can use filler to get it smooth with the other planking.

What I did was lay a piece of planking on the wave and sand it down till it is smooth.

It's a lot of sanding, I know…...

So better is to use the filler.

That's the profit with double planking !

Just a note for my followers......the ship is currently going to be dry docked for a little while. I am hoping to move in the near future and will be discombobulated for an unknown amount of time. I will post back on here when a station has been setup and the build continues.

Ok I am all moved and have a place for ship building so give me a few more months to catch up on everyone's log..........

I took a bit of time and drove the nails deeper and I will fill them so no filing off the heads and they will not poke out.....I know I know .........I was given great advice to remove them all but I drove some too deep for that and was afraid of the collateral damage from trying to dig them all out....

 

Ok on to the advice and guidance I hope to receive........ Ok so I will not use the nails ( much to my wife's delight since no more banging ) so I made up these clamps from clothespins.......

 

And I think I will use them this way...

 

So my question is if I do this will I not end up glueing my clamps to ship at the same time I glue the strakes??

 

Sorry for getting right back into it....I will try to socialize more now that were almost settled in ........I hope lol...

No apologies needed.  Glad the move went well.

 

If your clothespins stick to the planks from the glue you might try just the smallest dab of Vaseline worked well into the surface of the clothespin before you use it as a clamp.  That should cut down on the adhesion.
