Salute Michael,

You are very talented persona but also modest although your skill...

I am very honoured by your kind words about my log even I don't deserve them...

In my Corel kit, from time to time I am confused about which Berlin I am building. Wood and ornaments quality are good but the accuracy is doubtful. The picture at the face of the box of the kit and the ship after the plans don't match every time. Then I decided to follow my imagination and my acceptance in case of hesitation because I was not able to find enough information about Berlin.

But you, you can about Vasa. That is not good for anyone who is not skillful enough, comparing always with the original he can feel disappointed. But talented as you are, that is very pleasing and satisfying. I can really congratulate you on making very artistic build of such a complex ship...

The hidges were provided by the Corel's kit. I answered you in your Log, how I has formed the hidges...

Best Regards…

Ferit KUTLU

Çok hoş Ferıt!

I only found your build today, I don't know how I have missed it. You are doing some lovely work on this model.

As I live in Turkey, in Turunç, just a few kilometres south of Marmaris I'd be interested to know where you get your wood from for the parts you are scratch building. I have a big problem finding suitable wood here. Maybe Istanbul is better.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

Hi Ferit, like Michael (md1400cs) I was alerted to your build when you posted on my Pegasus.

I could almost echo word for word what Michael said, your modifications are of a very high standard. I love the way you have replicated the quite complicated sheer lines on the hull and the magnificent single planking job, no second chances there.

I see you refer to yourself as ‘rookie’, if that be the case I think you have a natural talent for ship modelling.

Great work on the headrails, beautiful flowing lines, a build to watch I think.

Regards,

B.E.

Hello Ferit

Your Berlin is one Beautiful vessel.

The added parts made from scratch are remarkable and have very informative construction details, Thanks you for posting how you created such pieces. There is no comparison between your pieces and the kit provided attempts (I was going to say kit provided equivalent, but there's nothing equal between yours and theirs, except where they failed, you succeeded wonderfully). I really like your use of credit cards and CD cases. The black windows are very realistic.

Looking forward to seeing more of your wonderful construction.

I also like the large format photos. Its great to see the details up close. I love the way you have weathered the barrels. It really gives them a real look.

Also what type of wood are you using? You've mentioned walnut several times (unless I'm confusing logs), but it appears lighter then the Walnut I'm use to seeing. Is it a specific type/species? The colour of the wood is one of the things I really love about this build.

Its a shame the shade obscures so much in that last full length photo, The detail of your capstan is as expected, very well done.

Matti, John, Michael and Keith; thank you all for showing interest and for your kind comments.

Keith; Corel mentions the wood as african walnut. The light color that you view in some pictures, is its natural color become pale in time. When the wood has been crisp, the color was little more darker. In the other pictures, the darker color of the wood that I rather prefer, occurs after being treated with wood protector solution in walnut color, then flat varnished. The deck planks are from hornbeam wood treated with the same solution and flat varnished.

Very nice work on your capstan Ferit, that early type is I believe called a crab capstan and is appropriate to the period of your build. Berlin just wouldn't have looked right with the later style fitted to Victory.

B.E.

Unfortunately... As I like capstans of later style, I have to build a ship of this period. But I had decided to build next time - if it will be possible - Corel, Wappen von Hamburg.

http://www.modelships.de/Wappen_von_Hamburg_I_1/Detailansichten_Wappen_von_Hamburg_I_1.htm

(no capstan in sight :( )

She is very beautiful to me and the scale is 1:40 as Berlin.

These two as in the same ratio, they will be seen natural in respect of one another, I think...

I will second Blue Ensign's remarks regarding your capstan. Your work is beautiful; putting aside personal preference to do the job right shows great character.

The Wappen Von Hamberg is quite a project. She is an expensive lady. I see you have good taste too :)

Ahoy JPett,

Yes, as you say; she is an expensive lady. But If I will be able to realize this project, it is possible that the building goes on 3-5 years in the most optimistic estimation. After the price is devided by months, it doesn't cost a lot for a hobby like this... But she is very difficult, I know...

Ferit,

Hi. I have some questions regarding your capstan. I now realize that the one I installed on my current build is all wrong, and as BE  about the "not period appropriate" style (I'm sure learning a lot reading on MSW). So;

1) how did you cut-in those square holes? I don't see stacked "slices" in your wood at the cut locations?

2) your vertical braces, did you stack the woods and then Dremel them into shape?

Thanks for your time.... Regards Michael

Your are welcome Michael,

Yes,there are very scholarly people here, virtuosos of modelling. Knowledge and skill. MSW is an excellent source for me too.

1) I pierced a hole with drill, then I cut with blade the four corner into the shape of square.

2) Vertical braces were provided by Corel but the shape of each brace is different from another. I had to give them uniform shape, by cutting and sanding.

She is becoming a real battleship, great job Ferit. Are the ropes of the cannons glued to the deck ? If so, it is not noticeable.
