Hello from therealangrysailor

Good day all. I just wanted to say hi, and thank you for adding me to the group. I have not yet picked up a kit but I'm doing heavy research at this time. I'm active duty Navy and I know I have limited time to work a large project. If I cant complete it prior to my next duty station move, I will have to package a partially completed project. With these duties ad a very curious 3 year old boy, I don't know if now is the best time to start. I'm a finisher and could not just let a project go. My boy and I just put together a plastic model Cessna and it was a challenge the entire time. I'm open to any advice you all have. I love the work that I see on the site and it is incredibly encouraging to know there is a forum like this to get help and inspiration.

Hey mate, welcome. My advice would be pick something you like and then you can pass on your knowledge to your son. I was also in the Navy (Australian), and realise that this is perhaps a tricky hobby to get into whilst you are still serving. Having said that, I know a few guys who still completed models whilst in service. But it maybe a stretch to undertake a large scale Victory etc. But, pick something you are interested in and then both you and your young lad can learn and enjoy the hobby together. Best of luck.

Cheers

Chris

Thanks for the advice gentlemen.  Jake is the short name. I have been looking at POB builds and want to get all the main skills, rigging, planking, painting, fabrication.  I agree no large scale builds. I'm sea duty on the USS Nimitz. I have already learned alot just by reading through the build logs. Do you reccomend the starter kits that include the tool kits?

Hi Jake,

Welcome to MSW.

There's some pinned posts at the top of this forum: https://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/forum/10-build-logs-for-ship-model-kits/

Also here https://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/forum/3-new-member-introductions/

There's kit reviews here: https://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/forum/72-reviews/

Your best bet is look around and there's more here in the database: http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-modeling-articles-and-downloads.php.

If you have questions, do ask as there's no such thing as a dumb question.

So I decided on what I want to build. Just not on a start date. I want to build the USS Kidd DDG 100. Does anyone have a lead on a quality kit. I know I will have to outfit it specifically for the Kidd. I got stranded in Chennai India and got to sleep on the deck of the galley. Super cool ship. Thanks in advance you guys have been great.

Hi Jake, Welcome to MSW.

I don't have any information on kits of the Kidd, but her home port is about six blocks from my house and if you need pictures that can be taken from the bluff overlooking the dock I could do what I can with the equipment I own. All subject to when she is here of course.

Welcome to MSW from a former Navy Seabee! It may be best to stick with something smaller and simple both for the ease of learning and the time constraints. That being said, absence makes the heart grow fonder and if you don’t manage to finish a build before deploying, you will be more than ready to pick it back up when you return! In any case, find something you will like and have fun. Best of luck to you!
