Santa Maria by shipcarpenter - FINISHED - Amati - 1:65 - first wooden ship

Recommended Posts

From the log kept by Columbus it appears there were two boats on the Santa Maria, a small dingy type called a Chalupa and a larger one with a single mast and sail called a Batel. On a particularly favourable day the Batel sail was rigged on the poop deck to catch even more of the following winds.

The Batel was also used to circumnavigate the first landfall island, with very high probability, Plana Cays.

The guns on the Santa Maria would have been lombards, a breech loading weapon lashed to a stationery truck, i.e. no wheels

Hallo,

thanks for all your comments, likes and looking. I hope I´m finishing. Now I was a little delayed due to renovations bathrooms and kitchens. Now is my home finished (for the moment) and I can go on with ship. I am preparing some new photos I show you next time.

Have a nice time with your ships and with MSW.

Hallo,

long time no message from me so no big progress, but standing rigging is complete. Stand, base for display case both made of walnut wood.

Sails (I sewed in winter) are ready on their yards, but still no on the model.

Hello Shipcarpenter,

Just now coming across your build.  Very nicely done.  Great job on the small fixtures, and a very interesting take on the finishing. Congratulations on a fine build!

Thanks guys very much. It gives me motivation to work on my next ship. In next days I will start a new build log with another Endeavour here.

Dear shipcarpenter,

I would like to ask for some advice regarding the planking of this ship. I am trying to build the Amati Santa Maria myself, however I struggle with the planking process. Did you put the planks in hot water prior attaching the to the bulkheads? Also, I noticed that in the instruction manual that the planks must be attached with a slide bent upward, which I find difficult to obtain. However, in your photos it seems that you did not bent them upward as in the instruction manual. Instead, it seems to me that you just attached them horizontally.

Can you explain to me in detail the process of planking please. I`m trying to build my first wooden ship model so I am in a need of help. Also, I have a build log opened for mu workflow where I attached some photos to.

Thank you in advance!

Oliver
