Hey all, I Modeled a very long time ago and loved it but mostly plastic and only basic wood.  I’ve recently became a grandpa and have been rethinking my priorities and I’ve finally decide to start my own hobby since I’ve spent years supporting everyone else.  I’ve ordered the Thermopylae Model #791 from Mantua and am looking forward to the challenge.  Any tips on tools or other are greatly appreciated.  I expect this to be very slow and I’m not afraid to make mistakes.  I’m looking forward to the challenge

I don't know if you have been lurking around in various areas of MSW. If you haven't spend some time to familiarize yourself with our layout.
Create a build log, both for yourself but also for us. It will be helpful if getting stuck. Take pictures for your log, it will also be helpful.

Thermopylea t the 1:144 scale is small and will be full of challenges for you.

Just take your time, this is not a racing game.

Go to this link where tools are discussed.

Hello, Yankee Virginian.  I had an apartment at Telegraph Hill, when I was USPHS stationed at St, E's

A large clipper is a steep slope to climb.  The composite iron and wood - very late sailing era clippers - add another layer of complexity in the masting and rigging over the earlier types:  iron spars, wire standing rigging, chain involved with running rigging.

It would probably serve you to read this post =  For Beginners -- A Cautionary Tale

it is just above this post in this forum.

Hi Trent, and welcome to MSW! Is that your new grandkid in the avatar? Very cute.

Once you receive your kit, make sure you start a build log. It's a great way to get help and advice and encouragement, and we get to see your progress in building a beautiful and gracious ship. To start a build log for a kit, loo here:

Good luck with it. Sounds like you'll be kept busy for quite a while . . . and don't be afraid to ask questions if you get stuck or need to find something out. That's what the forum's all about. There's plenty of experienced modellers here, and they're very happy to help. And there is NO such thing as a stupid question :dancetl6:

Welcome to MSW.  Looking forward to your log.    I take it from your screen name, you're a former Marine?
