Rob,

And here I was thinking all along that you intentionally made it a little longer so that it could demonstrate a "real dolphin striker!"

You didn’t think such a thing……😏…You, of all of my critics, would have pointed out the error as soon as you identified it. An act you proudly Commit, as you relish in keeping with preserving  her accuracy.    Dolphin striker my……….  You wouldn’t let me intentionally inaccurately misrepresent anything on Glory.  🧐. You’re my official “fact checker”…..my authenticator……….the, *oh you messed that thing up*, got my back kinda guy.

Short of one or two things I’m just too selfishly bullheaded over, that we’ve already discussed…….you’re my, *keep your nose to the grindstone*, and *keep it right* advisor.

I know you secretly knew the martingale was outa proportion.  Why you didn’t pistol whip me earlier is a mystery.  Must be that kind heart residing in your chest.  🥰

NOW…….I can get back to the rat lines.

Rob,

Based on the 1909 date written on the right border, I believe she's had the height of her masts cut down at least twice by then. Her moonsail yard on her main mast is gone and it almost looks like her foremast is now higher than her main. It also appears like keel hogging has increased the height of her prow and reduced the rake of her prow. To see these changes easier, I lightened up the photo a little.

It is really annoying when you discover something that looks wrong and have to get it fixed "immediately". I think it is the perfectionistic gene taking control. A common problem among MSW builders I observe.

I think this is during the time she was brought back into service to serve as a troop transport.  She surely is not as lofty as during the time period I’m modeling her.   She’s riding high in the water too.

Rob,

In his latest email, Mike said a sailor, William Joseph who served on Glory of the Seas in 1880, modeled her with red pump wheels. This is not meant to tell you what color to paint your pump wheel, just sharing what Mike told me. I thought you would appreciate knowing.

No problem Rich.  I fully appreciate your research.  I read that myself and wondered about it.  I chose not to paint them, based on, I could not find any corroborating evidence myself.   Plus it was after the time period, I am building my Glory.  So there is enough speculation and uncertainty, to disregard conclusively, that red was it’s color during my time period.

Rob, Vladimir et all,

I just stumbled on some beautiful close-ups of Lloyd McCaffery's impressive "Glory" carving of Glory of the Seas" classic Grecian Goddess 'Athena' figurehead, found in my wife's phone. As it turned out, my phone's battery was low, so I borrowed Peg's and took these beautiful, sharp images. Which I then forgot were even in her cell phone. Vladimir, these should be a perfect resource to aiding you in recreating your own figurehead.

Its a wonderful carving and it took great skill.....I have nothing but respect for the carver....but.....(In all aspects), she's has a very disproportional body.  I'm sorry to say.

I posted updates last night, but somehow my post never materialized.  I finished up the starboard shrouds/ratlines and added the fairleads and ran all the buntlines and belayed them.

I'll repost those images when I get home.

Vladimir,

Doris is a lady who creates phenomenal lifelike sculptures with a form of sculpey clay for her incredible cardboard based sailing ships. Her 1600s Sovereign of the Seas is my personal favorite. She even gives tutorials on her sculpturing process. An advantage to her approach is that the figures are created larger than intended, as they shrink in the heating process. She's on this site with her own dedicated posts.

Worked on finishing up the starboard shrouds and ratlines.  Then I rigged the bunt lines through their fair leads and to belay pins.  Still need to add road coils.

Next will be to rig the gin block lifts and their purchases…..before I begin the backstays.

Rob, your model of GoS is looking great, and a pleasure to follow the updates.  I have just noticed though, that you have used chain for the boat gripes; I am assuming this is as per research you have conducted.  As the chain will have been pretty hard on the boat planking surfaces, and planks themselves, it may have been used in combination with wooden pad pieces to keep the chains off the planking, and/or leather (or other) Scotchmen (anti-chafing mats/pieces)?  I admit not looking back through the log, so I apologise if I have raised something you have already discussed?  For the purposes of modelling, however, what you present serves the purposes of how and what was used.  Only raised as FYI.

Pat , good observation.  Those chains would most likely be encased in a canvas sleeve.

I tried several attempts, but none were acceptable or truly convincing, so I opted to leave the chain virgin.  Knowing the issue was an extremely minor one.

Pat , good observation.  Those chains would most likely be encased in a canvas sleeve.

I tried several attempts, but none were acceptable or truly convincing, so I opted to leave the chain virgin.  Knowing the issue was an extremely minor one.

Thanks Nic.  That would have worked.  I also recall EDT using tissue paper.   I just didn’t like how the paper I used, crinkled as it folded around the hull, unlike your straight example on the stays.  So I simply “opted out”.

Now the real work comes….. adding the bunt lines, rigging and belaying them , along with all the other rigging.  Need to finish the starboard lift and lower topsail sheet.
