Outstanding! We are actually at just about the same place on our builds. I started my second planking today. I posted a picture of mine on my build log a couple days ago, looks just like yours. 😄 👍

Hello Kirby,

I recently came across the pirate ship bed you built for your son and it was stunningly well done. I have no doubt you'll do a great job on this model too.

I wish I had put a waterway and spirketting on my Fly... maybe it's not too late...

Cheers,

starlight

For now. I have been at this for over a year. At my current progress rate you will be half way through your next build before I finish this one!

I just retired and trying to find my way in the world. 😂 I might have way more time than some to build. Whatever progress you make will be done out of joy and relaxation I’m sure and I’ll be watching. The bed pirate ship is crazy cool! 👍

Thank you for the kind words! I need to finish up the log on the pirate ship bed! That was a really fun project for sure.

I know I didn’t need to go the extra details on this build, but I just couldn’t help myself. :)

I have a long way to go before I get that kind of free time.  Hopefully my hands and eyes are still good enough by the time I get there!

I knocked out the pedestals today. Not sure what drill size I used. Had some nails that were thinner than the keel and long enough to go about an inch into it and the pedestal.  I used a hand drill to make the holes in the keel.

The pedestals have a big hole in them. As wide as the keel. I used some scrap balsa and a stripping tool to make some square stock to wedge into the holes and then drilled them out to match the holes in the keel.

In the end I have a set of pedestals with spikes in them. Still haven’t figured how I will attach the pedestals to the base. Figure some big screws or something.

Should be clear to finish the first planking now at least!

Hi Kirby,

When you were fitting the pedestal mounts, how loose were they on the keel? Are you going to rely on the nails going into the baseboard for the stability of the model?

It is pretty snug, but I am not sure I am going to trust it to them along.  I intend to design and 3D print a more beefy pedestal that also sets the keel angle to the drawing.

Show us what you come up with when you do.

You really need to research the many logs for answers and not hijack other’s logs.

After 3 years and 3 months, I decided to pull the ship off the shelf and see if I can start to make some progress again.IMG_2601.thumb.jpeg.7a537f83dc86c93b10966c7bcc354d1d.jpegI have stressed over the second planking and fitting around the gun and sweep ports so much. I just decided to go for it. I started with the shear planks. There was a little non symmetry going on at the stern, but I was able to fix it. IMG_2604.thumb.jpeg.af194f5df2f5e95572c2fce8b6401c72.jpeg

I just kept going from there. Got the top three planks done on the starboard side. I was hoping to get 4 full planks before starting to taper, but three seems to be the limit. Happy with how it turned out. IMG_2607.thumb.jpeg.0ac3c5f5933c7e831bc3aa328f912c78.jpegIMG_2617.thumb.jpeg.acad80aaed77bb364d9c189c2b14208c.jpeg

We had some family crafting time in the basement today so I did some more work. I had apparently given up on finishing this thing at some point in the last three years because my plank bending board was in the scrap pile in the garage. 😑 I did go ahead with a 4th full plank before trying to bend and taper. I previously marked bulkheads on the first planking. I want to try to do pseudo scale plank lengths and alternate plank shading for some extra eye appeal. I am trying a slightly different technique for my second planking. I butted together five full planks and marked the hull. I used a scrap piece of cardboard to copy that mark to each bulkhead. I then used the sectioning method that Chuck teaches and some Tamiya masking tape to try to mark off a better line to taper to.

When I did the first  planking, I started to taper way too early and it didn’t go well. With the tape line and marked piece of cardboard, I could see exactly when to start the taper. Another thing I did different was that I bent and edge chamfered a full width plank before marking and tapering. I was able to math the taper at the leading edge and hand sketch the taper. I used a knife and sandpaper and I make the taper. After two hours of work, I only added two more planks, but I think I am off to a better start than my first planking.  It did take me a minute to get the hang of soaking the plank and heating with my iron to shape again. This is such a slow process. IMG_3910.thumb.jpeg.8a8616886f411f167e9bf27f14e800e2.jpeg
