Providence by Edwardkenway - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - 1:25 - New England Whaleboat

Recommended Posts

Hello there,  I received this as a birthday gift and was going to kit bash it into an English east coast (Norfolk) lifeboat (Henry Ramey Upcher) but after a long think about it have decided to use the basic pattern for the lifeboat as a scratchbuild,  therefore I can build this as is, also it will be practice for clinker planking, which I've never done before. (Well not intentionally)20211215_182755.thumb.jpg.14caba0a3c00a3c9b3cd76746e080d7f.jpg

More to follow.

Clinker planking can be a little annoying for the first one, but just take it slow and it will go well.

Welcome Phil and Jack.

The framework has be glued together, and the internal planking on the bulwarks fitted20220110_090031.thumb.jpg.3cc4f46eea1a29192dc644220ed7c92d.jpg

The quality of the wood strips and other parts is imo good, the instructions on the other hand are a little sparse to say the least. Also my kit came with them on a DVD! I don't have have  a computer with DVD  drive or a DVD player. In the end I downloaded them from Artesanias website, thanks to Jack12477 for telling me about that!20220110_090007.thumb.jpg.cf519f412cd05fc2c95aadb4788b9492.jpg

anyhow, next up is the decking boards.

Thanks for calling by.

Hello again, the deck boarding and the bulwarks have been done. So then it was a case of getting the sandpaper out and fairing the hull, which after Winchelsea, was very short job!20220112_211414.thumb.jpg.76bee0a4af9a04dd2a976c86611bf665.jpg

And then the planking starts. The instructions give measurements for the overlap, making it a bit easier keep  the lap regular. 20220112_211500.thumb.jpg.7eb61cb71215b160266e0d409b3d6930.jpg

This is will take a while as I'm using wood glue and doing a bit on Winnie as well.

Thank you for visiting,  until next time.

Cheers

Well, four days and the planking is finished 20220116_064214.thumb.jpg.80a6c11c2d9e9bce1f91509eeb3e149d.jpg

I have still got to seal it prior to painting 20220116_064230.thumb.jpg.f53ccd61e442e39f31ea9af1918a5c2b.jpg

The keel, stem and stern pieces are fitted 20220116_064251.thumb.jpg.b4d109b78571243dac08c4264fda3fee.jpg

a touch of sanding and sealant and it's ready for some paint!

Thanks for looking in.

The paint has been applied, 2 coats of matt white, followed by 1 coat of gloss white.20220118_212207.thumb.jpg.67933ab1ae373df20f7bd74a0f4394ae.jpg

I know it perhaps should have stayed matt, but I quite like the sheen20220118_212441.thumb.jpg.e0b25b786910e3ce041f0e8ede3b411a.jpg

as it's not hi-gloss, more of a satin finish

So next time it on to the benches and fittings.

Thanks for having a look. Cheers

The benches went very easily, just a bit of filing, then things went a tad awry!

The laser cut shaped pieces that cover the top of the ply frames are a good idea, if the overall shape of the boat is perfect.

Mine wasn't!! So I had to do a bit of artistic faking and added some extra wood to the internal curve, I'm quite happy with the result!20220127_204259.thumb.jpg.91bf53658ebdb67dcb797d54d3071276.jpg

I've noticed at the stern post I need to do a bit of filling. 20220127_204325.thumb.jpg.b359020e827544f344546a73b49df2b4.jpg

on to the gunwales and another mishap, one of the two cherry strips supplied snapped while putting on an edge bend. The solution was a couple of .5mm pear strips (it was all I had that was closest in colour)  glued together and utilised as replacement the broken strip.20220127_204340.thumb.jpg.26094e35b186322bcabfbe7e8b154953.jpg

After a coat of danish oil, it blends in quite well, a tiny bit darker, but I can live with that😏

There is a bit of touch up required to the white,  but I'm leaving that until the end.

That's it for now.

Thank you for looking in, comments and hitting the thumbs up.

Cheers

I have been doing a little bit on the Whaleboat in-between starting the lifeboat and trying to finish planking Winchelsea. 20220207_203036.thumb.jpg.4458c85444eb010957d6d98d5a570bd1.jpg

The rudder and the rowlocks are done,20220207_202749.thumb.jpg.77482295a4ec0c03514467604fd64a46.jpg

the oars are nearly done, they do need a paint touch up!20220207_203008.thumb.jpg.2401189077d892687052768b0f241630.jpg

And the only blocks on the boat are rigged and placed.20220207_210729.thumb.jpg.44d35901385b61c4275c1240ea2d0261.jpg

I've used two of my early homemade blocks because I don't like the ones supplied with the kit.

Thanks for looking in and the likes 👍

Hi all, progress is extremely slow, rigging the sails and only spar is proving to be a challenge.

The instructions are, to say the least, very sparse! and not very helpful, I've been checking out the other build logs on here and getting slowly to grips!

Thanks for looking in and the likes.

A small update, the gaff? sail is rigged and set, 20220220_163916.thumb.jpg.37de6f091c0e6759bb18f0121f62f3c6.jpg

I've got to make some cleats to tie the ropes to20220220_163929.thumb.jpg.919d590f08534c29ee36aaeba39d1c20.jpg

the quality of the sails is not great, but as neither the Admiral or I have a sewing machine they will have to do. One more sail to do, then the detail pieces, harpoons etc and I'll be done.

Thanks for the likes and visiting.

Very nice!

Looks to me like a sprit sail. Interesting that it's lashed to the mast instead of suspended with a snotter.

Anyhow, I love these types of boats and yours looks great! It makes me think of a John Welsford 6m Whaler (which I'm sure is inspired by boats like this). I've considered this kit at some point. Looks fun!
