Gosh~ I did not realize that my last update was more than 6 months ago…

I did manage to do some work on GH2 during this period and will share below some progress pictures (and some comments where needed) on work streams where design and/or methodology differ significantly from GH1.

All the decks have been done in a similar way as in GH1, so no additional progress pictures are posted.

On GH2, I decided to go for a much simpler upper hull decoration, also giving more contrast to hull color vs. wale & decoration color. I used mainly thin ebony strips for the upper hull decoration.

For stern painting, I commisioned my art student daughter to do 3 golden hind paintings. I chose one of them for GH2.

BTW, the smudges on the edge of the deer is my doing, not my daughter’s. I made stupid mistake while varnishing the stern picture.

For stern  balcony, I decided to apply a more streamlined and compact design as below.

The rail design of the bow area has been changed from GH1. All the subsequent rails will be done in this style.

I was looking through my 'following' list and wondered how the build was going. I knew it had been a while since your post. I didn't realize how long.

Great progess and looks fantastic.

Hope to see more on this build.

Me too.  I haven't worked much on my little project.  Got to buckle down and get working on it.

Hi all~

Just a small update… I realized that for GH1, I forgot to install the ship’s bell. So, for GH2, I made a tiny bell out of left-over dowel and painted it black, varnished with matt varnish. I think it turned out OK.

I tried different methods and made couple of more for future projects. I may try to install it for GH1 as well once I resume with the rigging work on GH1.

Hello shipmates~!

Some updates on GH2 (Golden Hind 2) where the methodologies I applied and/or materials I used differ from GH1.

The whipstaff house design is more or less same as GH1, but I used slightly different methods to put them together more solidly.

IMG_1620.jpeg

IMG_1621.jpeg

IMG_1623.jpeg

IMG_1622.jpeg

IMG_1649.jpeg

IMG_1650.jpeg

For the staghorn kevel, I was looking for a more solid material that could be thinner/smaller and still provide strong structural strength.

I accidentally came across a small wooden tweezer in a discount store that satisfied my original purpose but also provided me with basic shapes that I can utilize as is for the kevel creation.

IMG_1643.jpeg

IMG_1644.jpeg

As you can see from above picture, I used most of its original shape to construct the kevel. Saving me much time!

IMG_1645.jpeg

IMG_1646.jpeg

Slightly thinner and smaller ones are the new kevels.

Hello shipmates~

A small update today. With the remnants of the small wooden clips, I made portholes(not sure if this is the right jargon) for the lines that would lead inside (from outside) to be tied to the staghorns. Below are some pictures of the work carried out.

I have not applied this feature in GH1. But, I think I need to (or at least I will try to).

Also, there is slightly different feature vis-a-vis the weatherdeck cannons. I tried to render a situation where some cannons are stowed away.

GH2 hull work is almost finished. My next update will feature the comparison photos of GH2 to GH1 and the resumption of work on GH1 - masts, rigging and so on.

Hi all~

Finally, the hull work on GH2 is complete. Below are some pictures of GH2.

Comparing GH1 with GH2. GH2 is definitely simpler and darker than GH1. They both seem to have their charm.

Also, GH2 (as intended) has more contrast in color compared to GH1. Now, I am resuming the work on GH1 - masts, rigging etc.

Both look super nice. Each is unique and shows how there's more than one way to build models.

Good job on both.

Hello shipmates!

I have resumed the work on GH1. First, I installed couple of stuffs that I forgot to incorporate in GH1 (like the ship’s bell). And then the mast work started.

IMG_1870.jpeg

IMG_1871.jpeg

Starting with the main mast, following are some pictures of preliminary works. The wood from wooden cloth hanger (from Ikea I think) proved to be valuable again - for the mast cap as well as the thin supporting structure for crow’s nest.

Moving on to the upper level of the main mast and mast cap, I realized that I almost ran out of the wooden hanger material from Ikea. And since there are no more broken wooden hangers, I had utilize a perfectly well functioning wooden hanger - for which I obtained wife’s permission.

Next, the deck of the crow’s nest. I decided to use slightly different design from the plan in order to provide some room for rigging lines and etc. at the back of the crow’s nest. For this, I had to shift the whole structure a bit towards the stern, making the crow’s nest appear to be located more in the middle of the mast (instead of slightly forward protruding towards the bow).

I'm rather taken by your 'simpler', darker version where there is no 'wrap around' of the so-called Captains Walk.  This may be a misnomer, since the rear platform would come in handy for small arms fire and swivel guns to supplement the 2 cannon below that protect the most vulnerable part of the ship.  The captain and officers would bunk in the deck above and I think that there would be at least a couple small windows for observation there.  Above that is a sail/flag storage compartment. Below the officers' bunk/hammock level would likely be the officers' mess.

The broadside does have 7 guns per side - in accordance to the accurate period report of the Portuguese navigator daSilva.  The only ordnance missing would be 2 guns at the bow, facing forward on the deck below the main gun deck, where the crew would have hammocks and some stores.  I also like the kevels on the gun deck ... we're not sure how early belaying pins were used  (early 1600s?), but a few might have been found.

You have made excellent models, and there is much to recommend them !       Johnny

Completed builds:  Khufu Solar Barge - 1:72 Woody Joe

Current project(s): Gorch Fock restoration 1:100;  Billing Wasa (bust) - 1:100;  Great Harry (bust) 1:88 ex. Sergal 1:65

Hi Johnny,

Thanks very much for your valuable comments and suggestions. I do agree with you on the trimmed balcony. However, I did find some examples (I could not re-dig the pictures) where the balconies were quite slim (or almost non-existent) on the sides. This was an experiment anyway~ But, with better reception by my art student daughter!

On the 2 bow guns, I really wanted to incorporate them but the only space possible would be on the deck of the forecastle. I could not find any historical evidence that this was done. But, then again I could be wrong. I could put 2 small guns on the top of the forecastle. Let me dig further on this possibility.

Anyway, I am very grateful for your comments. Much appreciated!!

As on the Vasa of 1628, the bow guns were near the hawse hole, which on the Golden Hind would be the deck below the broadside armaments (as were the stern cannon).  These two guns had longer barrels so their gun carriages could point nearly forward.   Period artwork of galleons in general show relatively high angled bowsprits, so the yard with its square sail would be high above the water.   This would block the view and the line of fire from any gun on or in the forecastle, but bow guns (like those of the Vasa) would fire under the sail on the bowsprit.image.png.81ada5de6b45ff318796777e08c36b9e.png
