Hi All,

Work speed in the shipyard has picked up a bit. I managed to finish 1st planking, keel planking and started on 2nd planking. Just generic planking work, so I will just upload recent pictures without much comment.

Below are pictures of final works on 1st planking.

Looking at the overall color of the hull, I decided that I need to darken the planks above the waterline wale and also possibly paint the waterline wale in black although I did not find any contemporary paintings or pictures where the wales seem to have been painted. It seems painting the wale in black would not be in line with the practice of shipbuilding in the 16th century. Nonetheless, since there is virtually no distinction between the hull planks and the wood that I used as wale, I will need to cut some corners  here - for purely aesthetic reason.  I will need to get hold of hard wood strips of different color (to the ones used in the hull) for subsequent Golden hind builds.

Pictures before the wale painting.

Super looking hull.  I appreciate the time you take to document your progress.

Thank you for sharing.

Hi All,

I started working on whipstaff and rudder before proceeding further with other stuff. Since the whipstaff will be mostly hidden I focused on the functional properties rather than aesthetics.

Below are the pictures of the rudder construction.

Work on the hinges of the rudder and gauging the location for final installment. I have used soldering for the first time and it was not that easy~

Hi All,

As I started on the beakhead platform, I realized that the  Aeropicola plans are quite unreasonable. Therefore, I relied on contemporary paintings as well as fellow MSW modelers' previous works and came up with something that makes more sense (hopefully!). I also finished on bow section deck but I decided not to put treenails there as I realized that I can not put the tree nails in a clean and neat manner (too small space to work on for me). The other decks will get their tree nails.

First, I had to put in a second wale in place before moving to next steps.

Great progress.  I am enjoying this build.  From an 'estate sale' I bought modeling books   Some were on miniatures, and several on the Golden Hinde.  I doubt I will model the ship, but your work gives me more appreciation on the vessel.   Thanks for updating the thread.

Hi All,

Using parts from a long decommissioned wooden toy, I made the anchor line portal (?) and it actually looks better than I expected. I think the remnants will be used for  GH2 and GH3  for the same purpose. Later on, I will use treenails to further fix the portal.

Before planking the main deck, I planked the area below the main deck in a simple format instead of painting it black - which I usually did for previous builds. Just wanted to see if this looked better than just painting the area black.

Main deck planking begins. I applied a simple planking method this time and after finishing it I regretted a bit. A 3 butt or 4 butt shift method would have looked better. I will apply at least 3 butt shift in GH2 and GH3.

For the deck material, I used 4 variations of the same wood - 1.plain, 2. dyed with tea, 3&4, dyed with slightly different colors.

Hi All,

Work in the shipyard is progressing slowly but steadily.  Finished the grating of the beakhead support and also finished the doors at the front of the forecastle.

I had to install additional beam to fill in the void near the stempost. After that, I applied a simple grating structure.

I am trying out different designs of the doors in my GH build. The front of the forecastle doors have been constructed from 2 laminated thin sheets of wood as base and attaching thin strips of dark hard wood on top of the base.
