Glad Tidings by Dsmith20639 - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:24

Recommended Posts

Started my latest primary build.  The Pinky Schooner, Glad Tidings, after extensively reviewing several other build logs on this site. This is just the beginning, so far I have only removed the half center keels and cut the rabbets on each keel half. I used my woodworking marking knife to mark a 1/16" reference line around the edges of the center keels and a sharp 1/4" wood chisel to form the rabbets using the laser marked bearding lines on the port and starboard halves.

Continuing work on Glad Tidings. Gradually adding bulkheads to each hull half. I'm going slowly, only adding one or two bulkheads a day allowing plenty of time for the glue to properly setup.

I have been slowly working on fairing the hull and the top of the bulkheads. Have been daily sanding, applying 1/64" x 3/16"  shims at low points, resanding, checking fairness with a batten, etc. Think I'm almost there.

Completed step 7 of the instructions. I cut and fit the carlings between bulkheads, locating their positions by taking off measurements from the plans using dividers.  I allowed them to dry overnight and then installed the laser cut traverse deck beams after cutting each to fit. The hull and the top of the bulkheads have both been faired to my satisfaction.

Completed steps 8 and 9 of the framing. Step 8 formed the mortise for the mast and step 9 installed the locator holes for the windlass bitts and the cabin heater stack.  Then I started stage 2 of the build by lining off the planking belts with thread.  Sheet 2 of the instructions says to lay out 3 belts A, B & C with belts A & B at bulkhead 10 consisting of 6 strakes each of 5" full size planks and belt C 3 strakes of 5" a broad strake 7" and a garboard 8". That gave a total span of 90" full size. My bulkhead 10 measured 96mm. This gave me equal width belts of 32mm width at bulkhead 10. I made 2 marks on that bulkhead at 32mm and 64mm from the top of the bulkhead.  The width of the A & B belt strakes were given as 3.5" each at the stem and the stern, which gave a distance of approximately 22mm and 44 mm on the model. I made 2 marks at the stem and stern at these distances for the tops of the nearest bulkheads 1 and 19.  I temporary glued a thread in what looked to me as a pleasing curve connecting these marks to form the 2 lines which separate the 3 belts. I have decided to start at the keel and work my way up when installing the planks. I used the templates provided in the kit for the garboard strake as a starting point. I traced these to thin card stock and cut out the pieces that make up the garboard and then began gluing these in place. Once the garboards are in place, I plan on using  the planking layout from plan sheet 2 and the base established by the garboard strake for spiling the remaining planks in each belt.

Slow going. I was out sick for a few days which didn't help. Completed the lower "C" belt spilling each plank. Filled minor voids and did an initial sanding of the result. I think the top two belts will be easier. While waiting for the glue to dry between adding strakes I began work on the aft cabin. I used the plans and some sheet wood to make patterns of the cabins front and back and then laid planks on the results. That allowed me to get the slanting cabin side at the correct angle. I used the laser cut cabin top beams as a guide for the curve at the top of the ends and the holes left over from the laser cut deck beams to draw the curve at the bottom of the cabin ends. I carefully sanded the bottom of the ends checking the fit with the deck camber as I went along.  I installed most of the cabin top beams. Finally I drilled the holes for the port hole castings after measuring and marking their locations from the plan.IMG_2516.thumb.jpeg.6dc5f12b8278c490df61760f24cd6241.jpegIMG_2518.thumb.jpeg.592bff19d0ae5d7a19bb2e3294f7e33a.jpegIMG_2517.thumb.jpeg.4d703ea2b4d5e7d59732b28b8c5ddd87.jpegIMG_2521.thumb.jpeg.676e064766a2b83eaa28f454a6b53ce6.jpegIMG_2520.thumb.jpeg.1e918d7d242dd11cc3afbc3870e7db43.jpegIMG_2519.thumb.jpeg.765c1820d0272eef0628e5ad2b813332.jpeg

Completed the middle "B" belt of planking. Spiling is going OK with only a few minor gaps between planks. Not satisfied with how my strakes end at stem and stern. I think I have a few strakes that ended too thin at the ends. But with some filling and after painting will probably look fine. While waiting on individual planks to dry I continued work on the aft cabin. Used a small 1mm screwdriver as a chisel to create the guide IMG_2522.thumb.jpeg.e5b59b54ed48d7a458d666131c27c77e.jpegIMG_2523.thumb.jpeg.e092acf788a870b85cebebaff70d0f49.jpegIMG_2526.thumb.jpeg.87a020c6ed4a694f6eeb22bddd955775.jpegIMG_2527.thumb.jpeg.97e45147c4645845e22a3576d9cf8b42.jpegIMG_2528.thumb.jpeg.bcb028769618fb4b18bfa5db36900c38.jpegIMG_2529.thumb.jpeg.d9d0d36fc496e5afb2a0999e43599b70.jpegIMG_2530.thumb.jpeg.ea8e3e6393e4c8116728a162f0524976.jpegslots for the operable hatch cover, installed the port lights, and began painting of the cabin. Completed final "A" belt of hull planking and filled and sanded where needed down to 600 grit. Satisfied with the result. Not perfect, but it's going to be painted anyway. I have noticed that some of the prior builds on the forum for this kit did not seem to follow the instructions for the size of the planking, but used wider and longer planks. I'm sure they are more experienced than I am and realized that if the hull was going to be painted there was no need to go to that level of detail. I did, however, gain a lot of experience in spiling during the process.  It would have been great if the kit had come with pre laser cut out planks as shown on the plans.  I also did some further assembly of the aft cabin. The hatch mechanism is operational. I think for the front cabin I will paint the basic structure first and then paint and install the port lights afterward which should give a better looking result as my hands were a little shaky trying to paint the port light frames after installation.

Planking looks nice - maybe you've mentioned this elsewhere so sorry if I didn't catch it above, but what is your plan for finishing the hull?

I applied a coat of white primer to the hull which emphasized the fact that I needed to do more sanding to get a smoother finish. After several more interations of sanding I think I have it well enough and have brushed on two coats of primer getting ready for painting.IMG_2555.thumb.jpeg.5e324fcc75d2a734491d511d32fb548f.jpegIMG_2554.thumb.jpeg.82b6c176342be378ea088de386b7ed58.jpegIMG_2553.thumb.jpeg.b483ef34ba5dc6edd3f80f0525ba0f22.jpegIMG_2552.thumb.jpeg.81635e5a17c80c0ecabe3b4dd7e96430.jpegIMG_2551.thumb.jpeg.4f4e3223771900539fb5ebb414688dc2.jpegIMG_2563.thumb.jpeg.5b39e54a5c157acf3067df54c01d70c0.jpeg

I glued in reinforcements blocks for the chain plates as mentioned in the plans.

IMG_2556.thumb.jpeg.d236871149c8bfd4cf74aad77acc57ee.jpeg

I then installed and primed the plankshear. The material was thin and each side broke from being flexed when being fit, but was easily repaired.

In anticipation of painting the hull and getting the water line level when mounted, I worked on the mounting board for the model,

I centered the supports on the board spaced between the 8th and 13th bulkheads and measured the height of the water line at those points on the plans which showed a difference of 1/8 inch higher at bulkhead 8. I drilled and mounted the stanchions adding 1/8 inch of metal washers below the forward stanchion to raise it the appropriated distance. I will take further measurements to confirm all this before permanently mounting the model.

Completed painting of hull with yellow ochre base coat. Temporary mounted to base to draw water line. Tapered rudder and created pintles and gudgeons. Soldered pins in pintles using solder paste and a butane grill lighter. Still need to drill holes for mounting. Cut slot in top of rudder and fitted tiller to rudder with pin after rounding off forward portion of tiller. Next up is to finish painting the hull.

Hull painting complete. Began work on forward cabin. Started to paint rudder. Used blacking solution on rudder components but it failed to work on the soldered parts of the pintles.  Will have to touch up with black paint.

Continuing work on rudder and forward cabin. Drilled holes for port lights. Constructed parts for operational sliding hatch. Built skylight, but did not make it with working hinges as I thought I could not do a good enough job and nobody is actual going to operate them when finished. I want to partially complete both cabins before doing the deck planking so I can temporarily install them when fitting the deck planks in place. Applied primer coat to forward cabin parts.

Continued work on the cabins. Fabricated and stained the lift panels for the companion ways. Formed the bottoms of the cabins so they would align with the deck by placing a sheet of sandpaper on the deck surface where each cabin was located and gradually rubbing each cabin back and forth until the bottoms conformed to the shape of the deck. Don't remember where I saw how to do that, but it was probably somewhere here on the forum. Planked the deck using pencil lead for the caulking and applied a 1st coat of Wipe-On-Poly. Added the cockpit moulding but will wait a while before adding the cockpit cleats. Cabins are not mounted yet, just placed on the deck for the pictures.

Finished the deck, completed cabins and temporarily placed in position for photos. Repainted the planksheer as some of the previous paint was removed when sanding the deck. Still need to create hinges for skylight.

Temporarily installed the stanchions in the planksheer in preparation for installing the bulwarks (which the manual implies is the most difficult part of the build).  I reviewed Olha's videos on how she did the bulwarks but decided in the end to go with the method in the manual. Chickened out I guess.

I glued the bulwarks stanchions and knight heads in place using patterns cut at approximate angles and then installed the short and long knees. I then added the bulwarks gluing them in place along with the tombstone and its associated support timbers and the seat of ease.

I then cut the stanchions to length and applied paint. After that I painted the underside and edges of the cap rail parts then glued and pinned them in place on the stanchions. Finally I painted the tops of the cap rails. Some minor touch up of the painting still needs to be done.IMG_2671.thumb.jpeg.84a2f13e4d0e5be3a3f9500b9321529b.jpegIMG_2654.thumb.jpeg.469b9755d6b854e49466faeefa7e850c.jpegIMG_2655.thumb.jpeg.915c2efb5d07808c6131abdc0cc7e5b8.jpegIMG_2656.thumb.jpeg.bbf05d2da749a54a6effcc34774aad33.jpegIMG_2657.thumb.jpeg.042c0891dafb3aaa3d675b9d17746425.jpegIMG_2658.thumb.jpeg.815f3e59d749960737487936da080b24.jpegIMG_2668.thumb.jpeg.5530fe7dc29d517debad720a9a761387.jpegIMG_2678.thumb.jpeg.2a063b87009107cc6695bb7a733bc4af.jpegIMG_2669.thumb.jpeg.49dd090feb2c62e2238c36c1adeac959.jpegIMG_2688.thumb.jpeg.599af17b0ae53ad51ba808d23718ff55.jpeg

I made the tiller comb and began to remake the tiller as some how I lost it. I used the empty laser cut sheet as a pattern to make a new tiller. I still need to fine tune and stain the tiller and paint the tiller comb before installation. I also shaped and stained the main sheet and jib sheet horses and created their respective traveler rings and tackles so the tackles can be put in place before gluing the horses in place.  Easier to do it now than later. I think the stain I used is too light so I will probably restain with something a little darker. I also added and painted the jib sheet horse support planks.IMG_2685.thumb.jpeg.31b95f597b0088305e81f7bb280a62b8.jpegIMG_2677.thumb.jpeg.5eb4480f2a4a89f49b9a1b7940761d3d.jpegIMG_2674.thumb.jpeg.7fb806e80405dcdb7f33fe018bb78260.jpegIMG_2684.thumb.jpeg.54095cffd53be314b0eb4ded1b1226c6.jpeg

This was a slow week as I was disabled due to a back problem and was unable to work on the model for several days. However I was able to install the anchor chafing bars, bowsprit foot rope eyebolts, the foresheet eyebolt and the bowsprit shroud plates. I then began work on the masts starting with the main mast. I cut the heel of the mast to a square to fit the mortise in the keel, tapered the mast and added the boom jaw rest with its support chocks and fabricated the mast coat, then I painted the lower part of the main mast white. I also began work on the anchors.IMG_2730.thumb.jpeg.0d28a755f6f307e4d6847a1570dd2b99.jpegIMG_2731.thumb.jpeg.6f1fe43a1ef97b2a38ccecfef4b6a36b.jpegIMG_2732.thumb.jpeg.5b8db39c8fe5827c7bdd85759bd9fd02.jpegIMG_2733.thumb.jpeg.270fc03ea34276a4beb67a29f9811a37.jpegIMG_2734.jpeg.93680f55cd36aa1eb555ae4c6bccc2db.jpegIMG_2736.jpeg.95e0a141e11869d98c8d201ef1728186.jpegIMG_2738.thumb.jpeg.cb9402e116b326c6aa68342e4837aea1.jpegIMG_2739.thumb.jpeg.ff2aa3a2ebd783ca97058dabdf0e7a42.jpegIMG_2737.thumb.jpeg.09ebdbc8d2f7d070b4d91fd80c19c33d.jpeg

Completed the gaffs, assembled the turnbuckles. I made the chain plates and dead eye strops but my skills at metal work needs a lot more practice. I gave up and instead of fabricating a hinge I simply crimped the dead eye strops to the chain plates. I'll need to practice my soldering skills before I get to that point on my next build.  I also had troubles making hinges for the skylight and the seat of comfort lid. I then made a wire fixture for spacing the deadeyes and made the bobstay stem plates.IMG_2754.jpeg.bff3a327c92d82dac1899d1d8dd31d39.jpegIMG_2756.thumb.jpeg.ddd7f4acda3194170a84a878bdbe4840.jpegIMG_2757.jpeg.34d8be97c9bcb9070972e675c3503f07.jpegIMG_2758.jpeg.45b23ceb2524481785cc5c2bced96c69.jpeg

Hi Dsmith, your pinky is looking great. I just started my pinky journey but when I get to the metalwork I think I’m going to try that low temperature soldering paste. Seen lots of people use it and like it

Regards……..Paul

Thank you. I am also following your build. I used a low temperature soldering paste for parts of this build, but forming the small hinge pieces and drilling holes correctly on tiny parts is a problem for me. Watching Olha's videos makes it look so simple. I still need to create parts like shackles, thimbles, hooks, etc. for the rigging to come so I'll get more experience  and hopefully not give up as quickly. Then the decision will come on whether to add sails or not.
