Hi Clementine

All the planks would be about 10" wide midships and would be tapered the same rather than some a lot and some not at all.  It is is the same procedure as setting up planking on the ship itself (NOT the kit method😀)

If not too much trouble, can you say what boats and their sizes are in the kit, be it launch, cutter, pinnace or what have you?  THANK YOU!

Allan

Hello Allan,

sorry for taking so long to get back to you i have been pretty busy. i believe the kit comes with 2 launch boats, and a pinnace not sure about the other one. the measurements are

a little over 12mm for the two on the left, 12mm for the middle one on the right and a little under 8mm for the one on the very right.

i dont really know if these are accurate to the real ship or if im right in the boat types so i hope i could of helped

Been a bit since my last update, lost quite a lot of motivation while working on these boats and decided to take up another hobby for a while, but finally finished another boat and i am currently working on another. hoping to finish these soon so i can finally move onto the main ship again.

I realize this is absolutely not your doing and you are pretty much stuck with what OcCre provides, but this raises the question, do any kit makers provide plans and parts for realistic ships' boats to go with the ship in the kit?

As far as i know, no. you could probably find some plans online and scratch built them but nothing official. Honestly what occre provides isnt too bad its quality, just hard to build especially at such a small scale. I do hope the hobby reaches more people and inspires them to make their own improvement kits for stuff like this but I guess I got to use the hand I have been given for now.

Thanks for your response Clementine, it is very much appreciated.  I respectfully disagree though with your statement.   The boats in question and in most kits are totally out of scale from the frames to the width of the planks.  There are very detailed contemporary plans in high resolution of several dozen boats on the Wiki Commons site and hundreds more in low res on the RMG site.  There are detailed scantlings for early 18th century boats and early 19th century boats in W.E. Mays book on boats. With all this detailed information it is not difficult to build an accurate rendition of most any type of ship's boat, even with hand tools.  Couple photos of a long boat at 1:64 circa 1700 that was made with materials mostly from my scrap bin.  I know it is hard to see, but the coin is a US penny.

I built the 95mm boat from Master Korabel (https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/new-master-korbel/ship's-boats.html) as an add on to my Pegasus. It's a very nice kit - each plank is pre-shaped laser cut from very thin ply so they fit together nicely. There's a three part review someone did here:

https://shipmodeler.wordpress.com/2021/06/02/building-a-master-korabel-ships-boat-kit/

I also see Vanguard Models recently bought out a whole range of boats at 1/64th https://www.agesofsail.com/ecommerce/new-vanguard-models/ship's-boat-kits.html. Looking at the pdf instructions it looks like, unlike the MK boats, the planks must be hand tapered.

The Vanguard models are far better than the others but look to be limited in scope with only eight sizes from what looks to be one era, and in one scale, 1:64.  Maybe I am missing something.  My thoughts were to have information to be able to build at least 25 or more different types/sizes of boats at any scale. Obviously scratch builds rather than kits, but with a minimum of materials and tools needed thus  suited for both kit and scratch builders.

Starting on HMS BEAGLE Kit. What type of glue did you use to attach planking to deck. I have rubber cement but not sure if I need to use contact cement.

Thanks

Randy Clark

Hi,

I used wood glue for the deck, seemed to of worked out pretty good for me.

HI, Clementine. So inspired by your log! My Occre Beagle arrives tomorrow and I've been spending the past two weeks studying the plethora of Beagle logs here at MSW while waiting.

I can only hope mine comes out looking as good as yours!

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on your log as you progress.

First build: US Ranger - Corel

Second build: HMS Beagle - OcCre
