Questions......

Are you finished rigging on the cannon ?

Are you not making rope coils at the end of the rope's ?

And you put nails in the blocks ?

And you will see when you reach number21, it goes easier....

But you are on the right track !

Lovely work and plenty of idea's when I start my Connie in the future, be it smaller than yourn .

 

That Idea of a false gun port for setting up the block and tackle can be used for many ship builds.

Cannons look great!  each one will get easier and if you are like most people by the last one you will have found the most efficient way to make them just about the time you are done  . (Happens to me all the time)

I put nails in the blocks so I could rig them off the ship. Then I just clipped them short so they look like block hardware. I decided not to coil the ends so my deck won't be so cluttered when all 22 guns are in position. There will be enough lines when I rig the ship.

I placed my coils on the deck after attaching the cannons. I just glued the end of each of the lines to the deck where the coil would be glued. So if you change your mind, it can be added after. Looking great. They do go faster as you move along.

I bought some cutters like that from Amazon, for sprue or brass sheet, I don't think it is made for wood, unless it is balsa.

I might look into rope coils after I see what the deck clutter looks like when all 22 guns are done.

My big fat fingers and hands are worse than an enemy's broadside.....While rigging my guns, I knocked off a port davit. I must have given it a good shot since the davit was heavily pinned as well as glued. Two steps forward, one step back.

All 22 cannons have now been rigged aboard! Now, I have to neaten things up a bit and then see if I want to add rope coils or not. At least I added blocks and rings on the cacabels whereas Constructo just used plain rope.  

 

My Admiral just stopped by and commented, "Boy, they sure had a lot of guns!"

It got easier and faster with each gun. I only wish they looked as good as many of yours, but I am all thumbs, so don't look too closely.

Help!

If I do rope coils, which I now think will look good, How do I easily make 44 of them? I've just experimented with some ways and don't like the look of them. I could really use some instruction with photos if you can.

While I'm pondering coils, I'm fabricating parts to construct hammock stanchions and nets. Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

I did a couple of things. First, I worked until I liked the length of the string that IU wanted to coil. This was just trial and error until I found what I liked. Then, I cut the lengths I needed, ran the beeswax and turpentine mixture over it. I took a board and nailed two small nails in and cut the heads off. Then I polished the ends with my rotary tool. I wrapped the waxed lines around the two nails and pulled them off once they were wrapped. Then I shaped them like I wanted them and let them dry. The the next day, I placed a small drop of glue on the deck where I wanted the coil to go then used tweezers to place them on the glue. Once done and dried, I lightly sprayed the glued coils with the matt spray I used on the hull to eliminate any shiny spots from the glue.

Funny, I tried a couple different methods on my Connie, and I ended up Flemishing them down like full size line. I guess I was lucky  . . .

I just made 100 hammock stanchions for my hammock nets and hate them! Now I'm back to square one with making hammock stanchions. Maybe I'll coil ropes to un-wind.

Rich, your Connie is looking great.  Things like 100 hammock stanchions are why I started out much smaller.

I thought the 100 stanchions were just what I needed, but after attempting to put them on my ship, I didn't like them anymore. I just wasn't happy with the look. I'll design something else. It's not the first re-design I've made with Constructo.

Does the angle lean in or outboard? I am assuming inboard to match the angle (tumblehome?) of the hull.

According to the AOS, they pretty much are aligned with the centerline. More so than the sides. So if you look at them, they appear to tilt out from the tumblehome lines, but really are parallel with the keel's centerline. This makes sense as it squares the cranes with the deck.
