Hi from Ireland

Hi there, a completly new to wooden model building after a youth spent building plastic models and a 30 year hiatus. Hopefully after reading a good few build logs and taking the tips from those I hope I might make something presentable. I'm starting with an artesania Captain's Longboat HMS Endeavour. It was listed for the beginner so hopefully will suit my lack of skills working with such small wood. Am more too used to bits of 2x4 so should be interesting to see if I can adapt to the smaller scale. Might start a build log in the new year to get advice and support along the way.

Thanks

Welcome to MSW.   By all means open log.  It's the best way to get help and also meet other builders.

Hi! You sound like you have about the same history of model building as I do, and are taking the same approach to starting wooden ships, except that I'm trying the Saint Milo, also a beginner's build. So, from another new member - Welcome!

Are you planning on doing a build log of the Saint Milo Helge?

Would be interested to see how you get on with it and hopefully I can learn from your build. Many of the build logs on this forum are so good that if I can make mine half as good I'll be very happy indeed.

Slight delay to building my model. I ordered the HMS Endeavour Longboat and was shipped the HMS Endeavour instead. Have tosend back the one I received and wait for the replacement to come through. No harm though, will give me more time to get tips from other builds.

Hi Richie, a very warm welcome to the Model Ship World forum.  Since I finished my last simple project as a gift, (Chesapeake Bay Flattie) as a gift I'm trying to decide what me next project will be.  I'm leaning towards my Pavel Nikitin  Dakkar "Oseberg" kit.  Decisions, decisions.

Welcome Aboard!

Welcome to Model Ship World!  There are some fascinating Irish boats you could model, too.  I have built a model of an Irish currach and recently finished a model of a Galway hooker.  Lots of interesting nautical history from Ireland!

Past projects:  Galway hooker; Durham boat; Mayflower shallop; Irish seagoing currach; James Caird; Cornish fishing lugger; Pitcairn Island longboat; Bounty launch.

Once I gain a few skills I would certainly be interested in modelling a Galway hooker. I see that you've modelled one, any tips on suitable kits for a novice with a little experience (by the time I get through my build) or was yours a scratch build?

It was a scratch build of a leithbhad, based on plans from the historic ships of Ireland web site.  I added a load of turf to the hold, for the visual effect and as a conversation starter.  I believe ship models should have a little something that will encourage the viewer to stop, examine the model closely, and ask the modeler a few questions.  I could share some photos of the model, if you should ever decide to build one.

I'm already starting to think about my next build. I'm only 1/2 way through the planking of my first one, and thoroughly enjoying it, but may wait and see how I fair with rigging before I decide what to go for next
