Hi !

This is my first post here so hello everyone!
After almost three years I’m starting new project. As you can guess Endurance. Plan was simple, not to complicate set, fast build, a lot of fun… But I started doing research.

As far as I like OcCre sets this one have a lot of simplification and I’m trying to upgrade it to some level.

Right now only small part in construction but many hours in 3D software and on printers to get best representation of Endurance equipment.

This is my humble beginning of long journey hopefully with better ending than polar expedition:)

Marcin

Very cool, those 3D items you printed.  Have you considered selling 'upgrade' sets for this kit to fellow members?  I'd certainly be game, as the cost and learning curve of 3D printing are not on the  horizon, and not everyone wants to 're-invent' the wheel, so to speak.

Completed builds:  Khufu Solar Barge - 1:72 Woody Joe

Current project(s): Gorch Fock restoration 1:100, Billing Wasa (bust) - 1:100 Billings, Great Harry (bust) 1:88 ex. Sergal 1:65

Thank you!

I could consider it. I think I would need to print it in more user friendly way but why not :) But first I need to test those elements and see how they work and look. Potentially you will be interested in everything with boiler and steam engine or on deck accessories?

My plan contains all polar expeditions accessories like sleds, ski and crates…

Whatever you produce, I’d be interested in.  I have had this kit for two years - and initially did a kit review because of the overall value to an intermediate modeler. I studied the known lines of the original hull, and found that the kit bulkheads can be easily altered (if desired) near the bow (to reduce the flare slightly) and stern (for a little more fullness).

I’ve followed every build of Endurace with interest to see every modification that could be considered when I eventually do it myself.  The kit configuration appears to be as it set sail from South America - with a covered steering mechanism and the dog kennels.

I bought 3D brass stanchions for the railings (an upgrade from the PE verticals), as well as better deadeyes and blocks … also a Rope Rocket from Syren to make my own scale rope, and a 2 bladed screw.  The 3 bladed propeller provided came in handy for the Gorch Fock restoration in progress - to gain better familiarity with rigging.

So whenever you make extra 3D items, feel free to private message me to make any arrangement.

Smooth sailing, mate !    Johnny

During the weekend I don’t have access to my workshop so done some modeling. I didn’t like the engine so I changed it. Triple expansion steam engine with boiler. This is the closest I can get considering no reference at all. And no info what brand of engine Endurance had…

One inch cube as a scale reference.

Do you maybe have any information about lighting on deck ? I found that Endurance had electric lighting… Do we know anything about placement?

Thanks !

'Haven't even thought about lights ...  No builders have said a thing about them above deck (or anywhere), and so far no above deck photos have been pointed out to show any.  Below deck there were lights, but only a 'cutaway' model would have them ...

To conclude my findings…

Interior photos suggest that there was electricity on board and it was used. 9A64EB93-700E-4E4B-B075-EF8376B659C7.thumb.jpeg.12915837954606d08ce243cf324b3617.jpeg

I’m pretty sure that those are ceramic insulators like those below EE017061-F471-470D-B3CA-DAF74EC13E18.jpeg.7af442aa64f3f7b3f1f48e67ac30ebfd.jpeg

Placement and purpose is best explained by sir Ernest himself…

The question still remains whether there were any lights illuminating deck before Endurance was trapped by ice…

Amazing work on the 3D printer! It's going to be really great seeing these features when they become an integral part of your build.

As you may have seen, I've been working on my Endurance for about 20 months so far and estimate I have 3 to 6 more months to go.  I'm finding there is a lot to like about OcCre's kit, but also lot's of potential to make corrections and to add details that are not part of the kit, planking the sides of the deck house (as you have done) and the bulkheads being prime examples.  I'm looking forward to following your build.

Tom

A quick look through the photos shows oil lamps in most cabins, sometimes candles, and in the galley. Electric lights in the met station, carbide main lights in the "Ritz" with perhaps a portable electric light as well.

Craig.

I do know, that I don't know, a whole lot more, than I do know.
