HMS Victory by Shipyard sid - FINISHED - Caldercraft

Greeting everybody

Thanks for all your help and comments which are always a help. I have all but finished the port side apart from the gunport lids.

There are a few other bits and pieces to add and painting to tidy up. I made a big mistake by fitting the chain plates and some of the gun port lids before being warned by Dave ( artificer) thanks a lot. The way to go is get the channels in place loose fitted and then fit all the

Brass profile. Paint the hull at least around the area were the chain plates fit. Do that before you even think about adding the channels chainplates and gunport lids. I think that is the kind of order you should do it. I think any builders who have got this far will agree. I have added a few photos showing my slow progress, all down to my own mistakes making problems for myself. Here come the photos. Thanks for viewing

Hi David

Just arrived back from holiday to see the impressive amount of progress you have made over the past couple of weeks.  From your comments it seems that the channels and chainplates aren't straight forward but it looks, from the latest pictures, that you got there in the end - great job !

Thanks also for posting your suggested order of building for those of us coming up (now along way) behind

All the best

Greetings everybody

Well here's my latest update, after finishing the brass profile etc I returned to the gunports and completed the lids, leaving only the lower deck gunport lids to complete. The entry port steps are completed and the fender and chess trees have been added so there is very little to do on the port side now. I need to go back to the deck and fit the buckets. Before starting the channels on the starboard side I think I may return to the bows and do the boomkins and knight head assy, but then again it may be better to get the channels and hull profiles out of the way first, I am not to sure yet. So there we go, that's were I am now. So once again I am pretty happy with things and want to thank you all for viewing advice and comments......here are a few photos of my progress , the trouble with photos of this stage are they are all becoming a much of a muchness gunports and lids. Well I am off to do fifteen gunport lids!!!!!!!!! See you all later . Here's some photos

Regards DAVID

David,

Beautiful work. The Victory is certainly a difficult build, your work is so nice to look at. I'm tempted to try this one for my next build. But it will take a very deep breath before my sea legs say yes. In the meantime I will follow your beautiful build.

Greetings all

Well things are going well and this post is the last of the port side hull which is finished apart from touching up the paintwork etc. The cannons need there nozzles painting with red ochre and securing in position. What I need to decide is the distance from the port they should be secured, I don't think they should be set right back, but pretty well forward, so need to sort that. So were do I go next?? Still not sure, but it's either the boomkins or the starboard channels and brass profile which I did mention earlier. I do have one part to fit on the port side but I am not sure how it fits so if any victory builders know how the sheet anchor palm block fits could you please tell me. Well thanks everyone for your comments and thanks for viewing. I did say all the photos were becoming much of a muchness, but sadly I shall bore you with a dozen or so to finish. Catch you all later. DAVID..... Prepare to get bored, here's the last lot of photos for you all. Cheers!!

Well done David. She's looking great. As far as next steps go, I'd suggest delaying fitting the bumpkins as they are one of those things very vulnerable to snagging with a shirt sleeve etc.

Hello derek

Thanks for your reply, hope your gunport lids are coming out ok, and you are getting sorted on the cathead continuation. The photo prob? I am working in poorly lit room and using halogen lighting , I wonder if I could rig up an overhead fluorescent it might be better. Maybe some other builders may be able to advise me. The upside down photos ?? I am using an iPad and if I upload from the existing file option, the photos come up sideways or upside down, but I choose the option of take photo or video option they are ok. I have read about this problem on iPads.anyway derek I am now doing the buckets and then the starboard channels. DAVID

Greetings everybody

Here's a quick up date of my progress. I have now turned to the starboard side and made up and loose fitted the channels deadeyes and chainplates. The profiles are all fitted so all I need to do is tidy up the paint work around the areas which will be obstructed by the chainplates. I can then secure and paint the channels and chainplates, then it's the gunport lids. I will also need to touch up the paint on the ports as I go. As you may remember there was a bit of an issue with the securing of the deadeye strops in the channels avoiding pull out. I have came up with a simple method which is very easy and saves a great deal of time and messing about. I have posted a couple of photos of the way I have fitted them for you to see. As I have yet to learn how to put dialogue under my photos the first photo shows the method used by Dave ( artificer ) which involves securing a brass pin in the corner of the slot to secure the strop in position which is excellent. What I have done is a simple variation of the same by cutting an angle on one side of the slot half way up which is shown on the next photo. I have also posted a photo of my present position which shows the brass profiles and channels in position ready for painting. There's also a photo of my little jiggly thing. Here we go. DAVID. is it possible to put dialogue under photos when posting on an iPad as I am???

Hi David...

Just wanted to let you know that I have taken your advice and have posted directly to your log.  I sincerely appreciate your interest in my situation and certainly want to cooperate in the correct manner in using this site.  As you know I've had several questions about the gun port linings as to prepainting them and installing them after painting the hull.  I feel it will be better to paint the hull before attaching the linings.  Of course, I may be wrong and hence my post to you.  I'm also not sure as to how to establish the correct location for the black striping on the hull.  Although most pics I see of this give the impression that the black stripes follow the wales, I read that this is not the case.  Is it possible that I missed their location on the plans?  Please advise and again thank you for helping this old man.

Ok Jerry

If you go to page one of my log look at the ninth photo down and you will see I painted the hull yellow then fitted the linings. I will come back to you later about the fitting of the linings and about the water line. Just ask any question when ever you want. I will be back to you later. It may be a few hours DAVID

Here's the tool you mentioned to derek which helps you fit the linings easier. The wood is 3mm x 3mm balsa , glue the balsa inside the port, and use it for seating your linings , it makes the fitting of them easy with a pair of tweezers. If you do not get the balsa in the correct position you just trim it with a craft knife. Will get back to you later. Tell me if you don't understand DAVID

Thanks, David...I understand your idea fully.  Great idea...now one has a seat to sit the linings on.  I'll get some balsa and get to it.  I'm going to paint the yellow first.  I'll stay in touch.  Again, many thanks.  Jerry

Well, David..I just came back from my trip to the hobby shop (about 30 miles return) and have the balsa strips.  Unfortunately they didn't have metric sizes so I purchased 1/8 inch square which is only about a tenth of a millimeter larger.  I'm sure this will work.  So, I'll build all the "seats", paint the hull yellow ochre, paint the gun port lining and then line the gun ports.  Thanks so much for your great help.
