Creating the downhaul ring for the boom was harder than I anticipated.

The first one (top) came out to large

The second one (bottom) to much CA, which is revealed in the picture but not with the naked eye...... go figure...

And the bottom one is not in the shape of a circle.

However this is the one I am going with.post-967-0-28308200-1451108748_thumb.jpg

There is a way you can make good rings with brass wire.

First take something round which is the same diameter as the ring you want to make, a screwdriver for instance. Then wrap the wire around it in a spiral keeping it as tight as possible. Once done, slide the spiral off the object you chose to wrap the wire round and cut it in the place i have highlighted in the second picture, you can cut off as many as you need all the same size and perfectly round. Note in the pictures the spiral was not tight as it was only to be used for reference purposes.

As I stayed Sunday with intention of heading home Monday morning, this allowed me and Floyd to work on our longboats. So, yes I made the oars for both of us. A set of for each. post-967-0-47470000-1471881702_thumb.jpg

Can anyone shed some light regarding the oar locks as these are supposed to be made out of 26 gauge black wire.

The material list only shows 24 and 28 gauge. Which size has been used on others longboat?

Hurray!

Well, no saw dust but painting instead.

And I am back in the right enviroment and in front of the longboat.

post-967-0-02585800-1477616843_thumb.jpg

I dediced to go with white blades on the oars.

post-967-0-84730700-1477616801_thumb.jpg

The oars look so smooth prior painting but obvious not.

I think a light touch of 600 grit and another two coats and the fuzziness will be gone.

The oars are coming along. I think you are right- more fine sanding should do the trick. Glad to see you back at this build. I'm currently doing some tests before I paint the cap rail on mine. Did you do any masking inboard before you painted or freehand?

Thank you Steve for the nice word.

Yes, the oars turned out much better after another sanding and another two layers of white.

The inboard is all freehand painted, I found it trickier to mask than paint directly.

I looked at other long boats online of various styles and decided to go with a "three pair setup" six rowers.

Going with eight made it look cramped. I also decided to exclude the windlass and I have a surprise up in my sleeve for the long boat.

So, the oarlocks are in place and painted.

I am cursing myself, because I have lost plan one along with a box with material for the longboat.

Have no idea where it all is, so I am working from plan two and the instructions.

The rudder is now shaped and so is the tiller.

I predrilled the whole for the tiller and then used a flat pointed file to open up for the insert.

Lots of progress today.

Rudder is ready for painting,

It was tricky to get the pintles and gudgeons right, but after some work I got it right.

But getting the eyebolt done was a pain.

Even though I don't have much of pictures to present at the moment, I have been working on the longboat.

One thing that happened was the tip of the gaff got broken. It was an easy surgery.

Well, I used my five minutes this day (turned out to be fifteen but still), and made the iron rings for the top blocks.

Another step forward.

Well, it's called trial and error.

I'm currently working on set three of rings and bands.

It's the drilling that destroys some of them.

Getting there anyway.

The instructions tells me it is time to consider type of pedestals and base.

Considering the size of the longboat, I am making the base small, and using brass as pedestal. Pictures will follow.

Picked up the material from Hobby-Lobby.

Well,

It's amazing how small things can "disappear".

I think I have re-made the bands three times because of their capabillity of "flying".

Had another made yesterday.

Meanwhile I seized the line on the gaff.

post-967-0-74787900-1479424269.jpg

The line will get shaped with a light touch of glue before the peak halyard is seized in place.

I am starting to enjoy the seizing even though it is very fiddly and small work to do.

I bought a poly/cotton line from a fabric store, stronger than regular cotton but still easy to work with.

Steve, the base is too small for a glass cover. This is the first part of the display. But thank you.

Wish there were bigger ones to hold the model, could had been a fun way to show her.
