Hello again :P

@schnu: Thank you very much :)

My build goes on step by step - and nothing problematic so far. Really tricky is the bending of the brass strips for the Galion. The material is quite solid and it Needs a lot of Patience to get the brass into the correct shape. But at least it works. So i needed two evenings for just one side - including sanding and polishing the metal. But as I do not like the very bright and glossy natural brass Color I decides to paint all brass parts with a golden enamel. (This you can see on the first pics). After painting the decoration parts it Needs about two days to dry completely. I am a Little bit worried about the plans as they do NOT Show how to bend the strips. It would not be wrongf to find some more Details in the plans or photos. I am glkad that I found a site in the WWW, where just the Panart RC is shown in a very good built condition. But at least this should be found in a good plan.

Nevertheless all works good and to search and find is a part of modelling :D

I think I will Need two further evenings on the bow. Next will probably be the Stern with all the brass decorations too.

Enjoy the pics and - as always - any comment is welcome. I am learning more and more although I am not so much active in writing or commenting other builders logs. But I am looking :)

Hello Max!

I did not know you had snuck back onto MSW and into your ship building room!  I thought you were away enjoying Summer in the fresh air with your incredible furry friends!

I am sorry I missed the first steps of your second build but I will follow along with every step so I can see your skills in action again.  And learn a few tricks too hahaha.  Welcome back!!

Hello Bindy, nice to see you again...

oh yeah, we had us some fun and a lot of walking around and sure a lot of hunting, sniffling abd happiness. But the summer was wet and so I found my shipyard again... And now its time to sit back in our foggy grey german fall... perfect time to be together with my Caroline :D

After the planking and the decorations its time to start with all the constructions up on the deck. I look forward to this :)

Best wishes to you

Hello to you all...

It's tiume for a Little update and some more pics to show the progress.  The work goes on... time after time a new part gets on its place and give an Impression how the entire ship could look some far away day. I go most strictly along the plan, just chancing the order of the steps a Little bit. But this is not important as Long as the order gives any sense to the work.

After all the brass decorations -I colored the brass with a semi-gloss gold-enamel, after that I used some black dust to accent the molding - I started to build all the constructions on the deck. First are the two staircases. Well I needed three attempts until I can say - it is ok now. The chain plates (???? not sure for the Translation) that will fix the deadeyes do NOT fit anyway. I decided to buy some other ones, eps some that match to the ones Mr Mondfeld recommends. I ordered them and wait for them almost every day.

Thats it for the Moment, as always pls dont hesitate to tell if you see something wrong. All comments are welcome as I want to learn more and more. Still it is just my second ship...

Best wishes to all

Nice progress, although it looks like the stairs aren`t complete yet?. If you google some images of the Royal Caroline you will notice a door under the stairs.

Hi Max

Your build looks great. I have the Caroline also.As for the brass castings of the figures,I plan to replace the heads and faces with metal and plastic ones from figures that have full details of the face that I have found. The one's that they give you in the kit are what I would term as "Blob Faces".

I just wish that we could buy an aftermarket set for us that are not up to sculpting our own replacements. I just hate to do a good job on the rest of the build and then have to use these clunky brass castings, and since they will catch your eye first, they realy do not come up to the curent standards of model building.

I enjoy following your build progress, and take notes for when I work on my kit in the future.

Thanks

Thx all for your Kind comments...

@ schnu:

Yes the stairs Need some detail-work. I decided to build a door on the starboard-stairs and leave the closed gap as it is now on portside. The AotS for Royal Caroline only Shows a staircase on portside so I was not sure to build at least two staircases. But I will follow the plans and instructions. It is my second build and I am not as expierenced as I should be for further improvements. Step by step - next ship will come. At least I have changed the timber for the second planking - the walnut did not please me and I choosed some Teak (probably not the best idea as the texture of the Wood is very dominant... but I like the view), I will do a cannon-rigging (thats not in the plans) and I am not sure what changes may come.

@ testazyk

Can you pls tell me something about the Quality and the build of Roter Löwe? It is a ship that is on my wishlist...

@ keith

It is a pity that Mantua/Panart encloses such brass parts, esp the figures are poor - you are right. When you got some new figures can you pls tell me where to buy and perhaps send a pic?

Greetings Max

Unbelievable !!! I just spotted your like in display cases, and was reading your log!! I have just today ordered the royal caroline from CMB. So I have an excellent build to help me once I begin the build. That's after I get my Victory in the case. Cracking work on your caroline. DAVID

Hi David,

nice to meet you... Anoher RC-Fan here... I am excited to see what you will do on her and how you get along with her. I like the kit although there are the usual little mistakes in the plan. but the quality of the materials is quite good and a good base for a nice and enjoyable build.

Best wishes so far

Hello everybody...

a little update: I did the staircases ... on portside it is a solutiuon to close the gap between the stairs and the cabin just with some planks and a left-over piece of the castings as decoration; on starborad I designed a little door (to a locker room or a storeroom :) ) I admit that I like the starboard more, but I will leave it as it is and will not change.

Next step will probably be to fix the chainplates and deadeyes. I removed all plates again and will fix the deadeyes before I glue the plates onto the hull again. Its better to work this way as the chainplates provided with the kit are NOT the best. I will build up some own, but thats tricky and will better be done before fixing the plates to the hull. First of all all metal parts have to be colored in black (the translator says the english word is "to brown" ...  not sure if this is right... I will do it with the cannons too)

Cu and as always in this theatre :D

Hi Bindy,

the more you get the touch of the wonderful Hobby the more you want to give your model a personal idea. I was not sure if I can do things like this door - but it is not as difficult as I thought. No - it is great, funny and satisfying.

I think this door will not be the only "improvement" of my Caroline... :D

Hello all

time for another little update. The pics show some Details, as I went on the way to more constructions on the deck and the rudder. Long time ago I planked the ruddeer as I dont want to Keep it in the delivered way. Just some varnish is not enough as I wanted to see some structure or texture of the Wood. So I used the strips of Wood for the second planking. Now I know what a thinkness of 1 mm can do ... as I used a strip on every side of the rudder it made 2mm - and that made the hinges NOT fit. Ok, I carved the planks and mounted the hinges. I think it looks quite ok... The gratings and the skylight (translator ??) were done without problems.

I hope you like the pics and - as always - dont hesitate to tell me your opinion and to give me hints when you see errrors.

Hi David

hello Max,have been trying to keep up with your log and I must say your quality of workmanship is brilliant, the blue and gold color look very good together, what is the make and name of the blue, the stairs look great as does the door. Danke Edwin

Hi all

thank you so much for your kind comments and words... Yes, I admit - I enjoy the build very much. Its fun, its a challenge sometimes, gives the motivation to start a little little bashing, to improve the original results and bring them into a direction I like more...At the Moment I do some deck furniture, prepare the chain plates and look for the correct cannon-rigging. The kit and the plans do not intend to rig the cannons. But I think they look wrong without the ropes. blocks and hooks. I study Wolfram zu Mondfeld (is he known in the english-speaking world too?) and found a lot of good advice - of course - in our forum.

@ David thumbs up - its funny to do the RC

@ John :) thx so much

@ Edwin Thx too - and I attached a pic that Shows the Color. It is just Acrylic mat Color, the name is cobalt blue. It is waterbased - and I think you can get it in every do-it-yourself-shop

Hi my friends,

just a few pics as update. Finished the boat-holder so far, but I did not glue it yet. I Need free space to work on the deck for the cannons. Not until that I will fix the gang-way. Actually the stand for the boat-holder should be painted in red - but I decided not to paint it. I like the natural Wood-look more.

@schnu you are right - the time would have been here to use steer-wheels. Perhaps they used a tiller as it is "only" a yacht :) ?

Hi :)

thx so much for your kind words. I am not sure if I can dare to start a project like San Felipe or (also s dream) the Sovereign. But both ships are on my personal wishlist. And the day will come :) Next project will be Derfflinger (if I can purchase the kit - seems to be sold out for the moment) oder Caldercrafts Endeavour. But I admit - these really big model like SF oder SOS excite me very much. Only the sorrowful looking of my wife (for the missing space in our house) make me hesitate :D Perhaps we have to do some work on the house before :D
