ChrisLBren got a reaction from GrandpaPhil in Bismarck by ChrisLBren - FINISHED - Agora - 1/200 Scale
The first shipment arrived inside of 4 days - the packaging is impressive and the parts look great - as they should considering the price.  There's motors, wires, screws, plastic and metal components. I would have loved this as a kid - and loving it now as an adult !  There's a poster included and I downloaded the manual for the first stage - its 29 pages.  Also I paid a visit to my hobby store to pick up some sprue nippers, tweezers and glue - there's so many new things for the plastic model world - much more than when I was building these back in the 70s/80s.  Here's some photos.

Greetings everyone !  My son just turned 8 and has an interest in model building - so we have decided to purchase this model in 12 installments.  As a kid I used to love getting packages in the mail - he's so fired up he already checked out books on battleships at his school library.  Time is flying by as he grows up - and dont want to miss out.  My Ancre builds can wait for now.

The ship has interesting features - working lights, revovling turrets - over 4 feet long.  I will want to weather it a bit to take away from its toy like appearance - so will be looking for suggestions.

Here's a link to the website.  We ordered the first shipment last night !  I hear great things about this company from some of the members on the forum - its a bit pricy at 129 per month - but totally worth it to teach my son scale modeling skills and have a good time while doing it,.

Thanks guys - I think we will have fun.  I am sure the Trumpeter version is more accurate - but the electronic features sealed the deal for my son.  And its pre painted so no need to break out the airbrush.  Believe it or not - the first shipment may be arriving Friday.  I just ordered on Monday.  Talk about fast service !  Yves - what techniques did you use on your Uboat to weather it.  Im thinking just some oil washes to highlight the panel lines - nothing too much though.

ChrisLBren got a reaction from Jorge Diaz O in New monograph : L'Egyptienne French 24prd frigate 1799
Wow - just wow - I have been collecting Ancre books and Monographs over the past few years.  This is by far the finest.  The incredible amount of detail in photos and plans are off the chart.  Some of the previous Monographs require back up of the 74 Gun Series (which I own) as a reference.  This one is a stand alone - everything is in here to make an incredible model - one that obviously influenced the Super Frigates of the US.  I ordered it two weeks ago and it arrived today.  I can't recommend this one enough - its a must have for anyone's library who love French ships.  Bravo Gerard !

    Another quick update

The keel parts dried very nicely overnight so I drilled and inserted the treenails through the scarf joints.  Next I made the stern post and also cut the mortice and rabbet in it.  The false stern post was also made and its now all being glued to the keel.  Tomorrow I'll clean it all up and move onto the rising wood hopefully.

It's been almost a year since my last update. The reason is that Speedwell has been landlocked in Canada since last November. My very talented collaborator David Antscherl had made and applied all the carvings and I was going to pick her up to rig her just when Covid struck and the border was closed. I have all the blocks, ropes, masts and spars ready but no model. I'm hoping to get her this summer but who knows at this point. At any rate here are some photos of her sporting her wonderful carvings.

ChrisLBren reacted to Chuck in HMS Winchelsea - FINISHED - 1764 - by Chuck (1/4" scale)
OK finally the guns are all done.....I just have to make one more eyebolt per gun carriage....for the inhaul.  I always forget those until I take pictures.

The corresponding eyebolts and split rings were added to the bulwarks.  They were made the same as those for the gun carriages.  I used 24 gauge black wire.  The split rings were the same also using a 41 drill bit to make them.

There are also eyebolts/split rings on deck for the carriages which were also made the same.  BUT, if you examine the plans there are also 8 larger rings which need to be added.  I added those at this time also.   Those were made from 22 gauge wire using a #31 drill bit.  You can see I forgot the one eyebolt on the back of each carriage....so I will add those at some point.  Man that was a lot of eyebolts and split rings to make....sheesh!!

Remember that I wont be rigging them so they will look just as you see them here.  But the beauty of not rigging them means that I dont have to glue them into position permanently yet.   I will wait in case removing them makes it easier to work on the other fittings in the next chapter.  But if you are going to rig them....this would be the time.  I will rig one just to explain how I do it but then I will take it all apart...

Also remember that you wont be able to rig 4 of the guns yet because the eyebolts are actually located in the hanging knees.  Those will be added early in the next chapter.   So no worries there.  Check the plans for those....

And the proverbial pic leaving the camera on deck facing aft showing all the guns....Next up I will rig that one cannon for you folks and start on chapter seven.

Thanks Michael and Mark - both of those questions will be answered soon.  Im a big fan of photographing your model - thats how I noticed a molding off the quarter gallery in the second shot crooked - its fixed.  I really have issues with CA and won't use it on future builds unless absolutely necessary.  I may have a second go at those anchor bands this weekend - they are an eyesore to me - cutting them thinner would make a big difference and not an issue to re rig them to the knightsheads.
