  1. Mike - Thanks for your answers. One more question - Is the bow end of the garboard strake terminate in front or behind the scarf joint on the keel? Even blowing up your pictures It is hard to find your scarf joint. Also any chance you have a picture looking direct at the stern? I would like to see the termination of your planks end on.
  2. Darrel - Wonderful news. Yes the next meeting is the 3rd Saturday. I was out of town this past weekend and I need to publish the newsletter very soon. I am glad you connected with Dr. Per.
  3. Darrel - I like what you are doing. I wish I could help on the rail. On my Bluenose I screwed up and did not have the reveal. it is flush. Also remember that for the quarter deck the rail is covered by the monkey rail. so any joint should be easy to conceal. Just a note on your color choices. You probably know that she was not coppered. she was a wooden hull, and she was painted below the waterline with anti fouling paint. I have spent some lovely time with mask and safety glasses underneath a wooden fishing boat scraping and sanding. The most fun was the grinding with a power drill of the bronze rudder and prop. NOT!
  4. Mike - As usual I would like a bit more detail on your planking. It looks perfect! So here are my questions - Did you find you needed 12 planks per side like the instructions say? Did you taper all of the planks? Did you need to edge bend all of their or just a few? The garboard stake - where does it end at the bow? If I look carefully it looks like you had a drop plank at the stern is this true?
  5. Looking real good. It appears that yours and my model have much the same materials and plans regardless of the different scale.
  6. Stunt flyer - Not yet. Sam - No one came! I guess the great weather gave everyone something else to do. But I did complete the fairing and started to shape planks. But it has been a busy work week and I am traveling this weekend. So this build will have to wait until Monday.
  7. Pops, Did you try Acetone? I prefer the Acetone to sanding. But you are correct you need to treat the metal before you blacken. I soak in Acetone then rinse. After everything is completely dry I blacken. I use a 2:1 mixture of the Blacken It. I am also careful to rinse this so that the chemical reaction stops. And then get it completely dry so that there is no rust.
  8. I know the problem you are describing. I have exactly that issue with another of my builds. That last plank can be a bear. Very strange shape and very important to get right. Ok I will give your approach a try. Thanks!
  9. This picture does tell me very useful info. The usual plan is to plank the wale first so that you get a full width plank in just the right spot. but you planked completely from the keel. Hmm something to think about.
  10. Mike - It would be great if you had a picture of your first 2 planks installed or clamped. I am using the binder clamps (My favorite design). But have a bit of issue with the clamps holding the plank down. I am not getting enough of a side bend.
  11. Mike - As I said before, it is hard to keep up with you. I feel I am always dragging you back to ask questions. You mention that you edge bent your planks. did you do this before or after you curved them around a bottle cap or similar device. And how did you keep you edge bend when you resoaked and bent the curve? I am ready to install the first plank on the wale. I need to have significant curve for the bow and some edge bend too. Trying to figure this part out.
  12. Pete - Even your test pieces look like a finished model. I also do various tests, but never to the degree of yours and never do that look like yours do.
  13. Mike - your pictures tells me you are not retired. How do you find the time to move so quickly on your Long boat? I have a job and family. Back on page 3 of your build you show a picture of your fairing from above. Do you have a similar picture but showing the stern?
  14. Scary & Tedious yes! But the club is coming over today so we will all be doing something similar.
  15. So let me offer an update as we go into the weekend. The first picture shows the false deck and scrap for grabbing (thank you Mike) The last Picture shows it in the vice. Let the Fairing Begin!
  16. Pops - I don't know what kind of camera you have. But I have found that when I take Digital pictures the flash is often too much and no flash is not enough. So what I do is change the settings so that the ASA is higher or just increase the sensitivity. you might also try editing on your computer. Will you please slow down! so that I can catch up with you?
  17. Ray - I think you should be very proud of your Diana. she looks great and will look even better once you get some string on her.
  18. Mike - I am sorry for dragging you back to where I am in this build. but it looks like you added the transom before you added your "false deck". Is this correct? Also since you are doing this one in Boxwood did you replace the transom with Boxwood? I am right now adding the false deck on my build.
  19. Pops - You should be happy with the result. and you should be pleased with your accomplishment. You are over the hump and now have the understanding for the next project. You are non longer a novice. For your final coat may I suggest Wipe On Poly. You can get it is a Satin finish and it is easy to use. I always have a can of it handy.
