Requesting feedback for future MSW Group Projects
MEDDO replied to Chuck's topic in Group Projects on Model Ship World
I do as well. All we ever see is the midship section and an occasional Victory bow kit. How about we go all out and do a half longitudinal section. I have never seen a kit like that before and only rarely see an example of a contemporary half. I think it was Druxey who told me about a longitudinal half hull model somewhere in a museum where when you walk up to it you can see little scale hologram figures walking around the decks. -
Can’t believe one has recommended the best plank on frame company....Our very own Syren ship mode company has 2 of the best plank on frame models currently available. Both the Queen Anne Barge and the Longboat kits fit the bill

It’s a beautiful build and hope to one day be able to do such nice work. The dang cameras just pick up so much that look fine irl.

Really coming along nicely. I like the different contrast produced by the different woods. Everything is so crisp and clean. I’m not sure if I noticed it before but is the hatch grating raised slightly above the hatch frame or is it a trick of the camera light?

Chuck, I had that problem with a single frame on the Pinnace. Will definitely make sure don’t have to go through that again.

Thanks for visiting and all the likes. Fairing the frames mostly went fine. I did have one frame break off and the tip that meets the keel mysteriously vanished/teleported somewhere so I had to make a small wedge replacement so the frame could meet the keel. It came out fine after some shaping and sanding. Kinda worried it would not be strong enough but it seems to be doing fine. Wipe on poly changes the look quite a bit. I like it.

Began the slow process of fairing the frames. Very light touch needed to avoid breaking off the frame tips.

Great tip with the sandpaper. Maybe I will love this so much I will try to replace the other resin carvings with some scratch boxwood ones. Can’t hurt to try.

Throughout this entire build I will be practicing my carving as I wish to use the boxwood blanks instead of the resin pieces. Here are my very first attempts at carving and refining them. The blanks were purchased from the NRG a while back and it is just convenient that they are the carving for the QAB. It is nice to have a bunch of practice attempts. I will be continuing this carving attempt here and there as I wait for glue/paint to dry or when I have a few minutes to do something small. Left was first try a few months ago and the right side will be next The crest from a few months ago. I have at least 3 more of these guys to practice with so hopefully one will come out better than the others. (ug picture blurry must figure out iPhone...) and finally what these are supposed to look like.... This photo from Chuck's store Syren Ship Model Co. I like the way the thorns and leaves all look individual and easily discernible. I hope you don't mind I show the picture form your store. I will remove it if it is a problem.

The Rogers collection at the United States Naval Academy has a great collection as well if you’re ever on the East Coast United States

The 2019 NRG conference is in New Bedford Whaling Museum this year and it looks like it is going to be a great one. I am really looking forward to it. It seems that Mystic Seaport is only 60ish miles away. I would like to visit it as well when I am up there. Was planning on getting over there on Sunday after the conference. Looks like the hours are 9a to 5p everyday. I was was wondering if you can “see it all” in that amount of time or is it something needing another day or will I need to pick and choose which parts to see? There was just another forum topic on the rope walk that is there that apparently is not marked too well and seems very interesting. Anyone have any other “must see” items?

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
