The first few planks laid down. The slightest curve and the top edge wants to kick out. Using drawing pins to clamp planks down so I have no holes.
It’s tedious work but I think I’m winning. What do you think? Look ok?

It has been 3 years and 5 months, 2,225 man hours and Le Soleil Royal is complete. What a build this has been. First off let me thank you all for joining me on this project. The encouragement, and help along the way has been more valuable than I can say. There are plenty of things that I do not fully like on how they turned out, some may be replaced in the future, others I will try to improve upon on the next build. This one saw a lot of first time experiences for me with the carvings being done myself, sails and lighting. Only way to go is up from here! The last component that I will likely add in the future are the flags. I do not like the look of the ones that came in the kit, as they are really only printed on one side of the material. I am looking into having some different ones made, but that likely will not be able to happen until the coronavirus situation has passed. I will update if/when that happens. For now, here are some of the finished pictures, more will be posted in the gallery link below.

I am taking a few days to relax and enjoy the completed build as well as cleaning and reorganizing parts of the shipyard. Soon though, I will be returning to Royal Louis as she was set aside to finish S.R..

My sheaves and blocks arrived so I've started in on the rigging. Mast, boom and ladder now glued to the deck. I drilled a few holes into the mast and boom to accommodate the sheaves (I'm using them as my pulleys) and blocks. I realized that the boats probably used cables on the winches so I had to color the lighter thread that I had used with some Testors CreateFX Acrylic Flat Black Wash. I ordered (another wait) 2' of blackened 20 link per inch chain from Prescott Hobbies to use on the doors for the outriggers. My wife is printing out my American flag that will be flying next to Lt. Dan sitting atop of the boom. Here is my progress up to this point:

    Evening Scott
I unashamedly planked mine as a copy oy what the replica builders did, probably not textbook pc, but i am
happy with it. have a look here. Have a look on page 4.
I dropped plans under the wales using hooked planks, the timber used is Jarrah as per replica.

hof00 reacted to dcicero in Half Hull Planking Project by dcicero - NRG - Planking Tutorial by tlevine
Thank you, Gentlemen.  I'm glad you're enjoying the build log.  To the question about how I'm going to mount it, I would like to do it in the traditional half hull manner, on a wood backplate.  I'm concerned about the appearance of the top of the model though.  I don't want it to look like a construction site, which would happen if I left the tops of the frames exposed.  I'll need to do some thinking about this as the project progresses.

With the garboard strake in place, I moved on to the broad strake.  This plank took more work than the garboard strake.  I made three aft planks before getting one that I could install.  The fundamental problem is the amount of twist in these planks.  Of the three, the midships plank is the easiest to lay-out and install because there's very little twist in it.  Not only was it difficult to lay out the forward and aft planks with the Tamiya tape, but it was also hard to test fit them to make sure they would fit.

For the forward plank, Toni's instructions say, "mark the sternpost, dead flat frame and bow for the top of the strake and run a piece of tape to represent the top of the planking.  Again, be careful not to let the fore end of the planking run too high up the stem."  For the garboard -- and as I started laying out the broad strake -- I layed the tape out and then marked every frame, measuring all along, but with the instruction to not "let the fore end of the planking run too high up the stem," I came to the conclusions that this is a much less rigorous, analytical process than I had thought. It comes down to mark three spots and then eyeball it in.  Once I'd made that leap, layout got easier.

Now to that torsion issue, I've built with basswood before and it bends really nicely -- it even edge-bends nicely -- when simply wetted down with some warm water.  The heat of your hands working it is all that's needed, no fancy plank benders or anything.  After trying to horse the plank in place, I decided to just do that.  It's not mentioned anywhere in the instructions, but it certainly helped me.  I clamped the plank in place and let it dry.  When it was dry, I removed it, applied glue and set it in place without all kinds of force.  Toni does mention, earlier in the instructions, to be careful of putting dents in the wood.  That's easy to do and I did it.  I've since been working that little dent out by applying some water and letting the grain expand. You can see it in the second photo below.

The center plank, because there isn't much twist in it, is easy to lay out and install.  The after one, where there's the most twist, I found hard to lay out.  It took me three tries with the third time the charm.  Same procedure though.  Lay it out with the Tamiya tape and cut the plank.  Wet it to make it more pliable and clamp it in place.  Remove it when dry -- and here's the tricky part -- sand, fit, sand, fit, sand, fit, repeat as necessary until it's right.  In the end, I'm very happy with how that plank looks and the run of the broad strake, but it was more work than I anticipated.

You can see in this photo the amount of twist in that plank.

Here it is clamped in place.

    And here's the finished result.

All these boats look different from each other color wise. The only thing they all have in common is the white triangle up front so I did too. I did what I did before and marked and taped it up very carefully and then sprayed white paint onto it. Same brand one is supposed to use which I did. Unfortunately the white spray paint came up much thicker than the gray and red. So I let it cure and sanded it off for a second attempt. But just in case I bought another can with the same off white color in case the first can was bad. Same bad result even with the new can. So I sanded it off again and sprayed some white paint into a plastic cup and used it for an application with a brush. I also applied the registration which I might redo also.

    hof00 reacted to Richard44 in Armed Launch by Richard44 - FINISHED - Panart - 1:16
    Hi,
This is a build log of Panart’s 1/16 scale, Armed Pinnace, though as I commenced this model quite a number of years ago, the log actually starts from where I finished back then.
If I’d known then what I know now about model ship/boat building, I would have approached the build of this kit somewhat differently. I would have planked the hull using scale lengths, for instance. Also I would have thought ahead about the colour scheme and painted/stained various parts before assembling.
I’d finished the basic triple-planked hull construction and done a reasonable amount of work on the interior. I was however not happy with the wood supplied for the outer planking as I thought the grain was too obvious for my liking. The instructions say that this wood is walnut, but it looks as if it might be beech with a very pronounced flecked grain. I did use this for the hull below the waterline as this is to be painted and the grain won’t be a problem. Above the waterline I used walnut strips which I had available. The two different types of wood can be clearly seen in the photos.

Several drop planks can be seen at the bow in the photo below.

Other build logs mention a problem with the foredeck being undersized, but I cannot remember if I had that particular problem, though the appearance of the deck as I’ve built it, does not quite match the drawing on the plan. This may affect the installation of the gun slide, so we’ll see.

As well as the hull planking, I’d finished installing the ribs, the stringers, the decks, planking at the stern and bow and fashioned and glued in place the bow hatch. The instructions actually say to fit the cap rail (that goes on top of the planking and the ribs) before putting the ribs in place, but this would have been extremely awkward as the ribs would have had to butt up against both the deck and the cap rail. Very fiddly indeed. Instead the ribs were installed and easily trimmed at the top ready for the cap rail at a later date.

Then the next thing to do was to reacquaint myself with the plans and the instructions, the latter not being the greatest.

The infill blocks between the ribs at deck level were installed and the decorative nails at the rib/stringer junctions were pushed home after drilling pilot holes. The supplied nails were shortened as they were not meant to penetrate all the way through the planking. The stern hatch cover was made and glued in place.

The shuttering was then made. This was actually the very last of the instructions, which doesn’t make sense as these need to be fitted before the interior of the boat, including the cannon carriage and slide, is completed. I also didn’t follow the instructions anyway, but simply fitted and glued the transverse planks directly to the deck. The cutouts from the deck that I should have used, gluing the planks to these before putting the shutter in place, had gone missing anyway.
The shutters completely installed but not yet sanded.

The anti-slip strips were cut to size and glued onto the shutters. A strip of wood was taped to the shutters to allow the strips to be aligned.

The partly assembled gratings, which will cover the four remaining holes in the deck, are also visible in the above photo. These will be the subject of the next post.

    Cheers.
    Richard

    We got masts 👍😀
I did look at Mr Earl’s practicum and noticed had the cross trees the other way up from the instructions and other references support that, so that’s what I did.
But the practicum presumes the reader knows much more about sailship rigging terms than I do, and I feel safer with the visual aids of the AL instructions so I think I’ll continue in that vein. (But thanks for the suggestion Hof.)
I have decided I need to rig in the sails, just so I’ve done one as such. Maybe I’ll leave the sails out on my next build.

Thank all of you for the nice comments. I finished some more items, a large shovel, a paintbrush, a colour tablet and a pencil. Didn‘t want to kitbash anything of this kit but the little shovels looked awful. Designed two new ones made of 0.5mm stainless steel sheet soldered to a 1mm wire with two handles made of castello I had in stock. Some more tools to build...

Trying to get back into it.... It's been a while, that's o.k.
In between getting the house ready for sale, buying another, no one can move given the current climate....

So, pulled out the Rudder/Sternpost and associated components.

Sternpost is at least 10mm too long so carved out the first layer of planking to accept, still too long so will have to make the Keel a bit thinner.
Once I have things fitting, I'll try to "Articulate" the Rudder.
Doesn't look to flash at this time....
    (Second Planking can then follow.)

    A couple of photos....

Unfortunately, I really dropped the ball with keeping this thread up to date. Even though I haven't been spending too much time building this model over the last year, but I'm already pretty close to finishing it. Here are the pictures I salvaged from my phone:

    26. Once the chainplates have been installed I proceeded to rigging the model (honestly, this is the most difficult step for me as I find it is a lot easier to work with wood rather than with threads). Here are the jigs I made out of brass wire to carefully align deadeyes. I made 14 of those altogether(7 for port and 7 for starboard):

As for the rigging order, I didn't follow the instructions booklet too exactly. I mixed standing rigging with some running rigging to simplify the workflow. I didn't want to end up seizing something to a yard amid a spiderweb of lines.

This is the current state. The standing rigging is 100% done and the running rigging is 85% done (I completely rigged the boom and and both gaffs). Currently I'm working on setting up the ratlines:
