Yep, you're right. It's good to be back at the ole shipyard, again, that's for sure.
Cheers

Hi everyone.
Many thanks for for all of your comments and Likes!
Well, today, I received the wonderful ‘gift’ of time. Yep-Time to work on Shadow.
As you can see from the following photos, I’ve been able to do more work on the Lower Deck’s accommodation, namely, more cabins, cabinets, cupboards, a crew’s staircase leading down into the Bilge Deck and many other details which are too small to photograph effectively.
Still heaps to go, folks!
Cheers.

Young America - extreme clipper 1853
Part 242 – Main Mast Crosstrees
I cut the trestletree mortises for the fore mast crosstrees by hand but decided to mill them for the main and mizzen masts – for accuracy and simplicity. It is an easy milling task. The mortises in the mizzen trestletrees have been milled in a block of Castello in the first picture.
The top of this piece will be next ripped off at the depth of the trestrees and that piece then ripped to the width, producing two, identical trestletrees that can be cut to length and beveled on the bottom corners. The basic assembly is shown in the next picture.
The arms have yet to be tapered on bottom faces. The iron backstay spreader shown below was produced in the same way as the foremast counterpart, described earlier in Part 230.
In the picture the copper assembly has been soldered together, wire bolts have been inserted into pre-drilled holes in the crosstree arms, and the bolts are ready to be peened to rivet the spreader to the arms as shown in the next picture.
In the picture the holes for the underside eyebolts have been drilled but the eyebolts left out at this stage to allow hammering of the bolts on the small anvil. In the next picture the eyebolts have been added and the ironwork blackened.
The assembly was given a thin coat of diluted Tung oil in the above picture.
The next picture shows the futtock band on the main topmast being drilled for its eyebolts.
As mentioned in an earlier post, this band goes on after the lower mast cap, so it is fastened by means of the bent tab seen in the picture. Setting the eyebolts in the drilled holes keeps it in place. The last picture shows the completed assemblies.
The lower mast cap is on the mast but out of this picture. The crosstrees are ready to be installed on the mast. The next step will be to install the topgallant futtock shrouds before setting the mast.

I used to build most ot the 1/600 Airfix ships when I was a lad, they were quite crude by todays standards, but none the less an enjoyable experience, I remember on one occasion I went with my late parents down to Portsmouth (UK) Navy Days and was brought a Airfix model ship from their HMS Devonshire I think it was, that made building the model that much more significant.

that's not too bad of a price Lou......considering it comes with the upgrades, and the scale size of the kit. I can imagine how small the P.E. is.........there are many small parts in this kit. this kit has definitely whet my appetite for something larger and more notable....perhaps when I whittle down my current overload of projects
hello Frank........thanks for the good word even Popeye, when it comes to kit projects, doesn't know his own strength getting back into plastic for the time being has been nice.......but I have been getting 'wood' pangs.......making the stand for this model kinds entertained me a little. I should be getting back to the wood realm very soon
thanks OC.........I've not seen that kit. I belong to the Airfix forum.......I should look it up, since I have the link to the model site as well.

Denis
I have seen it in a number of places but it is a little hard to find who is selling it. Here is one as an example though.

There may be better offers out there.

Piet reacted to YankeeD in De Zeven Provinciën 1665 by YankeeD - Scale 1:50 - according to drawings by Mr. O. Blom - First wooden scratch ship build
Well its been some time so here another update.
The STB side of the hull planking beneath the first whale has been closed. As said earlier, its a tedious work but I am very happy!!
It really starts to look like a ship :).
I put the present state into the sun to get some non-TL light pictures. It gives a whole other dimension.
During the planking I started to doubt if I should not leave the port side as it is so you could see how it was build, but I decided against it. I did not like the view. So I am up for another tedious part of weeks planking....
This shows while still hanging upside down but just finished.
I am happy with the looks of the bow. This picture is from before the first sanding.
Also the aft looks good, some points needs some work but overal its satisfying. (and for the sharp eyes, yes I am going to redo the rudder, I already stripped it partly. I did the rudder much too early as I now find out. Same with the bow. In the planking you still damage the keel and the bow. But I already have an idea how I can rework them later.....
So it will be for quite some time before you will hear from me again. as there are some holidays on its way and I doubt if I can finish port side planking before end of this year.... we will see......
regards, Hans...

Thanks for the likes.
After looking through numerous books, models and not finding how planking is done in the Dutch Golden age decided to do the second layer of planking like the replica of the Utrecht. The book from Hoving and Emke show how it is done. Joints are called 'nibbed scarph joint'.
Painted the pavilion front, stovepipes and the skylights. The little blue pieces on the dowels go on the pavilion.
Making the window frames (1mm square dowel basswood). I have made all the frames like this.

Very accurate fitting of the cap and mast tenons Ed; it shows the care and attention you place on making each part. I still haven't gained the confidence to do that peening as you show; my efforts would have destroyed the fitting. Very nice work!
cheers
