  1. Mattss, Nick and Jjparsley, Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I'm still moving at a finicky slow rate at planking. Here's where I am now. Fitting the last planks, without any pointy ends, has been a challenge. It's an enjoyable and rewarding puzzle
  2. The stamped sheet with the deck surfaces is warped. I would be alarmed if I was a first time builder, but I don't think this will effect the final build. The false keel is more robust and very straight. The first assembly is straightforward, with tight fitting pieces. The pointed side of the floor needed to be filed wider. This made for a nice snug fit. The warped floor was easily overcome.
  3. Brian, Good to hear from you. We'll see how it goes. The build begins by veneering 3 frames with Sapelly planks. They are called frames, instead of bulkheads, on the instructions. I guess it is good that I am discovering how brittle the Sapelly wood is, while chipping some inside pieces that won't show as much. The veneer chips both with cutting and filing. I have to be careful to file the veneer toward the base wood.
  4. Nick, I find bending and twisting the planks to be challenging, and yours are coming along quite nicely.
  5. The Louise Victorian Steam Launch looks like a fun build for moments between my serious build of L'Hermione. I find the steam engine fascinating, the cabin delightful, and the boat lines very pleasant. When examining the parts, it is amazing that this model can be made from so few parts. It should be fun! 6. Thank you Brian, and also to all the others who have followed and encouraged me through this build. I consider Carmen completed. Each morning I look up and see this view of her sitting on top of my speaker. I can't tell you the satisfaction this sight gives me. I've cut and re-rigged several lines as many as three times, and still see imperfections, but have decided to stop messing with her, and enjoy her as she is now. In the beginning, my boys thought she would end up being a crappy, but cute, boat thingie. I actually impressed them! I will be looking at taking some nice detail shots and putting them in the Completed Kit Build Gallery, and then with a feeling of melancholy, say goodbye to this build. Now on to new ship building lessons and adventures....
  7. Hamilton, I appreciate your encouragement. Welcome aboard. Planking continues at a snails pace. I'm trying to pre shape each plank carefully. As an example, here's a starboard bow plank, and how the same plank on the port side looks when attached. Here's with the next plank added on top of it. I hope this is appropriate. And here's the next plank added on the keel side.
  8. Well Brian and Aqueous1025, My lessons continue. I have finished the rigging, I think, after redoing several lines. I may still redo the forstay. It seems kind of droopy. I just received a brass name tag. I got it made at Chick"s Discount Saddlery for $5.99. Since It"s made for a saddle, it's heavy duty brass. It came out beautiful, but a little bigger than I imagined. I plan to mount the tag at an angle, so it won't overpower the model. We'll see.
  9. Your build is non-stop amazing! Thank you for sharing.
  10. I just saw your additions and they are a joy to behold. Exposing the inside of the launch, besides the fine work above, would make this a nice build on it's own. The rope work looks so clean, too. Very cool.
  11. I just found your build and like what I see. I will be following along. Thanks for sharing.
  12. I thank you all for your kind words. Jparsley, I have been taking days with each plank, fussing to get them just right, and frequently not knowing how to do that. This included rejecting some of planks after hours of filing. Ofencer29350, I am trying to be accurate, but still haven't decided on many of the options. For example, I love the look of the natural wood. Also the colors on the reproduction ship don't seem to agree with old paintings. I also have limited experience and skill, but I'm really enjoying the learning process. Nils, I'm finding that the new camera is brutal at showing faults I never noticed before. I'm hoping I can learn some of your artistry. Matt.s.s., Thank you for your support and creative example. Here's another view of the planking.
  13. Boyd and Aqueoous1025, Glad to hear from you. I got a mint used Samsung DigimaxL85 for $20. It seems to be working well. Now I just have to figure out how to best use it. We'll see.
  14. Finally got a new camera on eBay. Re-took the last picture. I still need to learn how to get the most out of it, but here is my first effort. And here's the latest in the slow progression of planking.
  15. I appreciate your suggestion of a better camera. I have been dissatisfied by the quality of the ipad photos.
  16. Best wishes to the admiral. I thank her for " inspiring" you to build this gem.
  17. I vote for adding the clerestory. You did a beautiful job building it, and it looks good on your model.
  18. Brian and Jparsley, You were right! I moved the sail up half an inch and it looks silly. So now I'm putting it back, another lesson learned.
  19. Brian, To me, it looks like the gaff needs to be raised about half an inch, and angled up more, so the bottom of the sail does not fall behind the mast. The gaff will also match up with the topsail better. I will try to make these adjustments without cutting too many lines, but I will probably have to replace them all. I really appreciate your input. Thanks again.
  20. Thank you one and all for your kind comments. Jparsley, Brian, and Boyd, I agree with your choice of the present sail color. I've started rigging the sails and have run into some new difficulties. I ran out of blocks, since the kit didn't come with enough extras to make up for the blocks that I crushed or lost. I have also run out of rigging line. I have received some beautiful blocks from Syren, but not the rigging line yet. I've rigged the fore, main and stay sails. After rigging the main, I see that the fore sail needs to be cut down and rigged again. The stay sail needs some rework, too. This is quite an educating experience.
  21. It must have taken some skilled sguirrel fingers to produce such fine bashing beauty.
