Ryland Craze got a reaction from MajorChaos in 18th Century Longboat by MajorChaos - Model Shipways - 1:48
I put my Longboat aside so I could participate in the Medway Longboat group build. I really need to finish the Longboat. It looks so nice when completed.

Ryland Craze reacted to Blue Ensign in HMS Indefatigable 1794 by Blue Ensign - FINISHED - Vanguard Models - 1:64 scale
Post Twenty-four
At this point I skip sections 165-191 and move to fit the keel, stem, and sternpost pieces.
I want the keel pieces in place to modify the build board for the upright hull which will be used for most of the fitting out and detailing.
All these pieces fit together nicely.
Note: The keel facings are numbered 437/439 (Fore) and 438/440 (stern) – not as shown in the manual. The pieces are port and starboard specific.
0832
I found the trickiest part was fitting the stem facings. I needed to further tweak the planks ends using a micro chisel to allow the facing pieces to sit flat against the stem at all points, and line up with the peg slots.
The hull will remain inverted for hull planking and that board has been modified to protect the vulnerable stem piece.
0833
0835
The stem protectors can be swung in and out of position.
It would be a tricky issue if the delicate figure seating at the prow was to be broken off.
0840
0841
The upright building board has now been modified to support the planked hull.
0842
0838
Indy is now secure and sitting level, I don’t want this beast moving around whilst I am working on her.
On with the show.

Ryland Craze reacted to jfhealey in HM Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Fred Healey - FINISHED - 1:48
Thanks chaps. I think when all the coils are done I won't be so focused on the ones I presently cannot get to sit as I would like them to sit. I think in any ways these coils are the hardest bit of the model. I will try your weighted dowel trick JJ. I would certainly like the coils to be more "up and down" rather than circular and that might be the answer. At the moment I am experimenting to see what works for me.

Ryland Craze reacted to Ken Shields in Royal Caroline by Messis - FINISHED - Panart - 1/48
Congratulations Messis on completion of another excellent build. You may not consider yourself a top class model maker, but it would be difficult to criticise this marvelous model ship. I think you've done a top class job. The rigging looks nice and tight, and the images you posted, only confirm the apparent flawless construction. An excellent addition to your ever-growing collection. Well done!

Hi guys,
Long time no see. My professional time was to demanding, so I have been for a long time away. Still I found from time to time some spare hours to keep the shipyard of RC open.
So here are the results, could have been better, but still I am happy with my self, am not a 1st class ship modelist but I feel (after 7 model ships) I came a long way through (considering where I started some years ago) and thats a nice feeling
all the best to all of you
Christos

Ryland Craze reacted to MajorChaos in 18th Century Longboat by MajorChaos - Model Shipways - 1:48
Posting these picture I see the false keel had cracked a glue joint during fairing. It was well centered, hopefully a bit a glue and it will be ok. Didn’t notice until I looked at the pictures close up.
It’s so small it certainly requires extra effort to be sure everything fits and is faired well.
Boats are new to me. I’ve built a dozen flying RC aircraft. I do have wood skills, just not boat wood skills. In relation some of the aircraft accuracy of parts is much greater than the boats. It seems like some parts on the boats are close enough and why they were never corrected is a shame. The accuracy to build a boat translates well from my airplane skills. Having an eye for angles helps.

Those coils look great Fred, very convincing.
I used to make them a similar way but once placed on the model I would place an appropriate sized dowel at the bottom of the coil that was weighted, then I would apply diluted PVA or poly and simply wait for them to dry, extremely tedious but it gave the impression of gravity doing its job very well.

Ryland Craze reacted to glbarlow in HM Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Fred Healey - FINISHED - 1:48
The last step of my process for my Cheerful coils was basically to crush them with my fingers, a little squeeze, a little bend. They ended up looking pretty natural. Not sure how that would work with TiteBond, might be worth a try.

I think the coils look super---don't knock them-- you did a good job on a great build.

Ryland Craze reacted to jfhealey in HM Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Fred Healey - FINISHED - 1:48
I've tried making a few Tom Lauria rope coils. The methodology for making coils seems pretty foolproof though I had poor results with white glue - I used diluted Titebond - and much better results with small amounts of carefully placed CA. The problem I have is getting the coils to lie naturally. I can't see a solution to that at the moment. Still, they don't look to bad. I will certainly settle for them. About another dozen to make and Cheerful will be done!

Chuck, I think the deadeyes look great and very convincing, I do however like your wood ones and I’m partial to wood, even though it requires more work. I will try out some of your new ones just to see how they look in person but I don’t think they will make it on my winnie, she’s got a full compliment of fresh boxwood ones already, it will have to be my next project.

Ryland Craze reacted to Freebird in Cutter Cheerful 1806 by Freebird - Syren Ship Model Company - 1/48
Have completed the port strakes from the wales to the molding. Certainly not perfect, but better. I can really see how fairing and having all of your planks the same thickness is a requirement. I’ve done a light sanding and can see mostly dips where the planks are a little thinner, it really stands out and makes a huge difference. Good thing I like to sand. 😏
Best Regards …. Rick

Okay here is an update on my progress.
sorry for the slightly blurry photos I'm not an expert with cameras lol. any how it's going to get very interesting with the planking soon, because of the keel. more cutting and fitting." yay!" that will be fun to learn!

Taking care in the early stages of the build will pay huge dividends further along in the build. You are off to a good start.

Ryland Craze reacted to Claire7 in Norwegian Sailing Pram by Claire7 - Model Shipways - 1:12
Thank you @Ryland Craze!
So far today I have installed lots of tiny bits, inwhales, the stern & bow quarter knees and seat & thwart frames. As others have mentioned it takes a bit of thought to work out exact positions especially vertically which is only indicated with a reference photo for some pieces. One thing that threw me off was the position of the A B and C D pairs of frames. Their position is indicated relative to the 2 and 3 bottom frames (but not to each other on the paper strip).
Up next: completing the transoms.

Ryland Craze reacted to RGL in US 6” gun by RGL - FINISHED - Panzer Concepts
It would be massive, but the stats, 1 tractor replaces 16 horses, a regiment needed 1444 horses consuming 14 ton of forage a day in comparison to 4 ton of fuel. If they made them I’d add these too!

While those deadeyes do look great, I do think all of us are more concerned about your health then deadeyes.

Davits in, according to the book cover painting. They look very far apart for a small ship's boat. BTW, if there is a boat on the davits, would there also be a boat amidships?
You'll notice, also, that I've started installing rigged cannons. No training tackle. As Ron Neilson (hollowneck) points out: too small and finnicky.
