We got maybe three inches of snow. That's enough to get the locals excited and paralyze commerce, but it's less than what we were accustomed to in California and substantially less than the 8-12" in the initial forecasts.

Work on the landing gear is in progress. On the left are the port strut and door. On the right are the parts for the starboard strut and door, just for comparison. Not hard work, but kind of tedious. Once these are done it will be time for wheels.

Hello Peter, don't think I hadn't considered that! But, they'd be too small to be recognizable for this model...

Thanks for the castle comments. Here are a couple more photos after adding some of the trim details.

There are some barred windows that are added as well. I decided to try gluing a piece of black tissue paper to the back of these before gluing them into place. You can see the difference is makes below.

And, finally, when they were all glued into place...

And, finally, I've been working on modifying the forward most building of the castle, from the simple laser-engraved outlines of a door, to something a bit more 3D, with wood trim.

That middle piece with the cutout is my own addition, so that the door is inset from the facing woodwork.

As it still seemed to need some detail, I built a framework around the door panels and then painted the archway around the opening.

It may not look all straight and centered, as it hasn't been glued together yet. I just wanted to set them all up for the photo here.

By the way, I did manage to find the time to fool around with a website someone posted on Facebook which puts you into your own customized samurai armor. You can even download yourself in 3D CAD files that you should then be able to send to a 3D printer.

In case you don't want to visit the site, you can just gaze upon my samurai awesomeness here...

That's a screen shot from the website. You can make your own awesome samurai self here:

If I 3D print this, probably should be at least 1/32 scale to appreciate – I'm going to need a much bigger ship!

Thank you for all the likes and kind comments from Gary and Bob. I fully agree these older kits are somehow showing their age. Speaking strictly in materialist language, they are quite pricey for what they offer - I think many metal castings could have been betteromitted considering their quality. On the other hand I must say, exactly this is something that teaches me more than any tutorial or manual. I like the freedom in creation and design thinking, without any complicated laser cut parts or 3D moldings, there is always a chance to repeat the things and rework the ill-went doings (which I had to do several times already). This is so different from crisp plastic kits, where everything is prepared to the last rivet, but once screwed, alas...

As this is my first wooden kit, there is a lot for me to learn, but I like the look of the natural wood more and more and if the next build comes, I think I will do it in the same manner.

Bob: PoB from Model Shipways has been my favorite kit. The only reason I did not go for it was the scale - I want to keep 1:48, so it matches my other (plastic) kits on the shelf.

poor Diana was neglected for most of last year, but recently started to work again, as I really want to finish it and move on. this build will celebrate the 15th birthday this year. A major dusting was due, also had to examine the model and my notes to plan for the next steps. Finally made some running rigging lines starting with the mizzen, which is now mostly finished. After a few weeks I got into practice again.
Currently work on the main yard, after spraying with black primer, the truss pendants are being test fitted. In the foreground the jeer blocks are being made.

The current stage of the build:

    thanks for looking in.

I'm not sure they were very interested in my boat building skills Keith.

Today I did a bit of assembly - feels more like progress than many tasks.

I thought I would start with a photo of the main mast taken several weeks ago - just to give some idea of scale. I think I am going to need to start a negotiation with my better half on Germania's final display location.

The main mast cross trees started out little bare.

But soon acquired a pair of deck flood lights.

Then the various electronic appendages started to appear together with the ships horn.

I needed 6 aerials - made from wire and bar - a simple bit of turning.

A quick coat of paint and they were then glued into holes previously drilled in the cross trees. I also added the cables which support the top mast. I left the radar off for the time being.

I then move to the foremast - which was somewhat simpler.

    Quarter Deck Hatches
The local post is very erratic so I’m still waiting for my delivery from Ropes of Scale even though they shipped my order within 24 hours. In the meantime I’ve started on the quarter deck coamings, which like the upper deck, are made from 6x2mm boxwood, and the gratings.

According to AotS Diana the openings for the hatches and ladderway are larger and slightly differ in their positions compared with the ply deck supplied.

I have marked up the new openings and made the coamings and gratings accordingly. The main quarter deck hatch, being tapered, took a few attempts to get even close but I am reasonably happy with the final result – I don’t think I could improve upon it anyway. I have rounded the corners and added strips for the gratings to sit on. The other hatch coamings and gratings are made up too but all require shaping.

I didn’t have enough pieces to make gratings for the forecastle, probably because I made the aft hatch on the upper deck which isn’t part of the kit, so I am now also waiting for some grating kits from Jotika. If things don’t arrive soon, work on Diana will have to slow down and the shipyard will be going on short time.

    David

    UPDATE:
The gratings have just arrived so work continues..

    Hello,

I live in Bordeaux (France) and I am interested in the entry of Rear-Admiral Penrose’s squadron in Gironde in March 1814 and the capture of the French flotilla of Blaye on 2 April 1814.

I apologize in advance for my bad English (partly from the translator Reverso!) and thank you in advance to all members of the forum who can help me with my research.

    Thank you, Steven.

I managed to fix the issue with planking at the stern.

I first cut out the planks as shown:

    Then added these filler pieces:

Did some planking and treenailing, then applied tung oil:

Lastly, I finished with the painting. It is not as perfectly seamless as I had hoped, but a lot of it will be covered up with the quarter gallery parts and some scrollwork so I am not very worried. I hope there will be enough visual distractions to hide any mishaps. And to note, I widened the area of the white pinstripe since there is a small section where the mouldings stop, and I wanted that part to seem like the white part met the dark blue.

And I made some of the mouldings using a scraper. The only parts left to complete the major hull work is to install these and work on the sternpost.

Incredible story behind this boat: one of the greatest feats of seamanship, Captain Bligh's seemingly impossible voyage in a small open boat from near Tonga to Timor, 3618 nautical miles.

    lots of sanding

I was confused by these cutouts for the oars. I added small blocks which can be inserted when the boat is under sail to increase free-board, which was already low in this overloaded vessel. Somebody build a full scale replica and used something similar to seal off these cutouts. Other options would have ben some posts seen in other models. Does anybody know which version is the historically most accurate?

    Very enjoyable build.
