NMBROOK got a reaction from mtaylor in Buying an Expensive Kit and throwing most of it away
As probably one of the most extreme kitbashers on this forum, whilst this may be a valid question, why should I have to justify why I do what I do?
Bottom line,I take whatever route makes me happiest. It is only money,my time spent on a build is far more precious to me.
Offended no,a little annoyed yes.I make a point of NEVER criticizing other modelers' choices on this forum, directly or indirectly.I post on here in the hope that some of my work may prove useful to others less experienced than myself.

Let me help clear the fog of confusion for you Vince, at least from the perspective of one kit enhancer.
I simply enjoy taking a kit and making it better. Kit costs are not an issue for me and I derive all the modelling satisfaction I require from what I do.
Each to their own.

Before continuing the first planking above the level of the main deck I wanted to determine exactly where the planks would end at the bow. After studying the plan sheets i marked on the bow deck where the planking should end - approx.19mm in front of bulkhead F. I used one of the cut outs from the bulkheads to make a new false bulkhead which already had the correct deck camber across the top. Then I spaced it 3mm in front of bulkhead F. From what I measured it should give me the correct starting point for the planks. There will be another thin false bulkhead which will have the roundhouses & decorations mounted on it & glued on at a later stage.

Magnificent work Nigel! I have a time-consuming job and a couple of sons to raise, and I completely understand your challenges. You're accomplishing a lot more model building than I am! I have Mordaunt on the shelf, and I'm thinking of starting her as my next build.

NMBROOK got a reaction from aferox in MORDAUNT 1681 by NMBROOK - Euromodel - 1:60 - Beyond Bashed
Gosh, over 5 months since I posted on here!!
Over the past couple of months no progress has been made but I have had the opportunity to do a great deal of thinking. My new position at work is taking all my time leaving me realistically Sunday to do what I want.Money wise,I certainly can't grumble but it does mean my modelling time has drastically been reduced.
I basically need to take stock and reassess many of the projects I have on the go.I am going to continue with Mordaunt but need to take a change of direction. To carry on as is would result in many years work at the rate I am going coupled with the fact there are a few small details I am unhappy with.I believe that to move the model back in the direction of the stock kit will bring back the enjoyment into the build.I had previously set my bar so high,I worry carrying on will result in frustration at not being able to make anything in the way of progress.
There will be some minor detail changes to the stock kit, mainly around the windows and a change in timber for the topside planking, but in the majority I am going to use as many kit parts as possible. It does build into a nice model out of the box and I found one on the net that won a gold medal in the Czechoslovakian championships with minimal changes.
Currently I am reviewing the drawings and Pete's interpretive files to establish how the changes I have made already impact the fit of the kit stern etc.So far everything looks like it will fit as intended,I have to console myself that all the additional work has resulted in a superior foundation for the main deck and hull planking. At least I will only have one layer of hull planking to fit after completion of hull fairing.
Royal William may be shelved until retirement or if my circumstances change in the distant future, you never know I may even buy the kit and graft the prow I made into that build, but that is something for another day
I am not too sure when the next update will be,but will no doubt be when I have turned the build around a little in the direction I want to head
Kind Regards

Looks like it's been awhile,...... but, I have been busy with the build. I 'm fairly happy with the progress on the stern as everything fits to my satisfaction. The planking has been completed below the main wale and I even got to try my hand at some spiling. Some current progress shots to follow .........

I think this model looks far better with brass.Copper would have clashed with the wood tones and looked poor.Changes have already been made for aesthetics in that no paint have been used,I see no reason that changing to brass for the plating should raise concern.

After gluing the metal bulkhead on I thought it would be a good time to plank the main deck - it will only be planked from the metal bulkhead forward because the deck behind it will be enclosed by the other decks & won`t be visible. The wood supplied for the decks is walnut ,which is a little too dark for the decks. I decided to try the soaking in bleach method to lighten them up. After soaking in bleach for 45 minutes & then rinsing very well with water I set them on some old towels to dry. After drying they had turned to a very light gray - much better. I was very pleased by the way they turned out. The first picture is before & after bleaching.

Staggeringly beautiful work Giorgio
The finished colours of the Pear are fabulous. If I may ask,if you use Shellac, what tone do you use?I am thinking of using this for the first time on a model, but am torn between the blonde and button flakes.
Kind Regards

Pete - thanks for your kind words.I had my reservations when I started this kit because I haven`t done much scratch work before, but I am really enjoying it. The closer I look at the castings in this kit the more I am impressed - the detail is better than any kit castings I have seen in other kits.Everybody has different build methods so each one should look a little different.
All the best to all this holiday season.

Hi Mark,
I am following your build with great interest but I do get 'depressed'. My interpretive files were only ever intended as a guide to others and it is clearly obvious that your build and others such as Keith, Vince, etc, etc will be on a far higher plateau than mine. For that fact I am actually delighted !!! I wish I had constructed the window panes as you did. Ah well, next time. The point is often overlooked by many people but the Euromodel philosophy has always been that all builders of their products will be more guided by what is in the excellent drawings than what is in the kit itself. That intentional concept leads every builder into a quasi-scratch build rather than a straight kit build. No two builds will ever look the same ! Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of material in the kit but you just can't stop trying to go that one step further.
Hint: that white plastic resin ship's boat has actually proved to be the basis of an excellent product - took some work but the end result I think is great ! So hang on to it. I have almost finished constructing boats for their entire fleet.
Seasonal greetings to all that sail on our seas !

Started working on the cast metal bulkhead which is located under the quarter deck. The detail on the casting is pretty good, but I din`t want to just paint the windows.I got out my little mini drill & micro files & proceeded to open up the window openings. It was a little time consuming but not too difficult. Then I painted it with a medium brown with white window frames & gold trim.I thought it came out pretty good.
Also I want to thank every one for there looks & likes. Thanks also to the other RW builders - I refer to your build logs frequently. And a big thanks to Pirate Pete for his very helpful interpretive info. Also forgot to mention I used a product called Micro Kristal Klear to make the window panes.

Hi Nigel
Great to hear from you and thanks for stopping by. Does the moving van mean that you've now been able to sell your house? Great news and well done!
Thanks also for commenting on my watch. She's a beauty and, even though she's carved from a solid block of titanium, she's as light as a feather.
All the best for Christmas and New Year!
Cheers
Patrick

NMBROOK got a reaction from PriceMachine&Design in New mini-mill... CNC and impressive
Thank you for posting this Mark It is an incredible piece of kit, however the first thing that sprung to mind is what PriceMachine and design mentioned. The $4000 price tag is just a small chunk of what is required to get this machine up and running.
I am also very wary of the fact that the monies for orders placed are obviously being used to 'bankroll' the company to allow production.Spending that kind of cash,I would only feel secure purchasing a readily available machine from a well established company.
Kind Regards
