NMBROOK reacted to UpstateNY in Red Dragon by UpstateNY - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - Scale 1:60
    Hi  All,
The past few days I’ve been working to complete all the deck furniture.   All the windlasses have been completed and pinned to the deck as has the capstan. I spent a lot of time learning to make my own rings and eyebolts from 26 gauge brass wire as I ran out of the kit supplied items after I used some them on the cannon rigging points. Kit as it comes does not rig the cannons. As part of the cannon rigging setup,  I've used Chucks 5mm boxwood cleats which I think look really good. The laser char was cleaned off using just light scrapping.   Last but not least, I finally assembled a cannon to check how it would look. I had to make even smaller eyebolts given the small size of the carriages as the kit ones looked way out of scale. Quoin handle was made using a blackened brass planking nail and the cap squares from painted black card.   Next up is to complete the rest of the cannons and fit the mizzen and main mast bitts. Then the cannons need to be rigged before I'll can glue down all the deck furniture.   Thanks for reading and the images are below.   Cheers,   Nigel.

Thank you JP Yes I am big fan of Ebony,it is a pig to work with, but you can produce effects that would be an absolute nightmare to achieve using dyes or paint.

Just some pics without all the clamps and things trimmed to shape so it makes a little more sense The upper level of the transom will be inline with the projecting balcony

I have finally fitted the remaining glazing bars in the lower stern windows(yes another five to go above these and numerous ones on the deck bulkheads )

The three on the right are complete, the two on the left have had the bars sanded flat and awaiting another coat of matt poly.

I have now moved on to fitting the balcony floor.Three copper pins were bonded into the edge of the floor and correspond to holes drilled in the transom. The softwood former underneath is temporary,it is purely there to hold the correct camber as I had a small amount of springback when the floor was released from it's jig.The floor has been epoxied to the transom and lower edge of the planking. The protuding sides will be trimmed and sanded flush when the epoxy has cured. This will also release the softwood former which is held with blobs of epoxy at each end.

I am looking forward to the next stage,I had a lightbulb moment this week.I have worked out how to produce decorative paneling in boxwood with an ebony architrave detail. It is based on DrMike's technique for creating these panels, but with my own twist. All will be revealed in due course

Thank you very much indeed B.E.,Michael and Nick

sadly B.E.,we currently live in a most unpicturesque part of Yorkshire,I hope to be within 'spitting' distance of the 'white horse' if we ever get moved,so that should change

I think one of my biggest influences in the choice of woodtones Nick,is Dr Mike's Rivoli,I am simply in awe of this model and his use of colour

Excellent work JP I like your prefab gunport linings,I did something similar myself on Mordaunt. The only issue with basswood is it's inherent fuzzyness. You may end up making extra work for yourself when it comes to painting these.Lots of coats and rubbing down to get a satisfactory finish on something that isn't the easiest for access. That is the only downside you may experience, pear or boxwood, although a pain to trim etc, would make the painting so much easier

On with the Gun Ports....the full scale plans were used as a template to transfer the openings and after measuring and remeasuring (and remeasuring) ...the gun ports were knocked out with straight edges and a scalpel.     The holes were expanded to accommodate the inserts which will eventually allow for final planking and the rebates allowing the gun port lids to open and close.

Some preliminary ideas on color scheme are being tested... The wales will definitely be black and I thought the brass cannon set on the black gun port sills might be attractive. Probably  not too authentic but I let that ship sail long ago.....I'm using soft basswood on the gun port sills and debating switching too something a little more  durable... the basswood is easy to work with but not very forgiving and shows every little mishap.

LOL... still working with the text and image placement --- I hope it all makes sense --- and thanks for looking in.....

    Hello Nigel and Dirk,
There will be again the video from unboxing the kit but it will be available when the kit will be ready (mid-September). Now I can only show the pictures of the laser cut parts and etched set.
    There will be:
6 sheets of 4mm birch plywood (615x215mm each)
7 sheets of 0,8mm finish aircraft birch plywood (615x210each)
2 sheets of 3mm walnut wood (100x500mm each)
2 sheets of 2mm walnut wood (100x500mm each)
1 sheet of 1,5mm walnut wood (100x330mm each)
1 sheet of 1mm walnut wood (100x200mm each)
6 sheets of 0,6mm pear veneer (110x600mm each)
1 sheet of 0,6mm pear veneer (140x600mm each)
1 sheet of 0,6mm pear veneer (110x340mm each)
1 sheet A4 photoetched set (there are parts for lanterns, gun port hinges, dead eyes hoops, doors, windows, rudder hinges and etc.).
There will be walnut strips in the box for second planking and lime wood for the first.
So I think you can click on 'buy now'  because you do not pay for it now. You can pay just after you will see the video with unboxing kit when the kit will be ready .

Let me know if you will need any other info.
    Best regards
    Daniel

Having downloaded the instructions on your website Daniel,I can see just how much work has gone into the development of this kit.I have said 'no more kits from now on',however this is the one I have been patiently waiting for and it is a potential game changer.
I must congratulate you on the design, the potential is there for the builder to model all the gundecks if they so choose due to the frame design of the bulkheads and also the special jig to maintain alignment of the upper bulkheads.
I already have permission from my other half to put my name down, some brief explanation of what is made of what,i.e.what is photoetched and what timbers are used would help push me off the fence
I assume I would just need to click on the 'buy now' on your website and follow the instructions,am I correct?

    Nigel,

Thanks for your comments. You have been one of my teachers so always appreciate your thoughts.

Yes, I do believe that she will be fully fitted with running lines as well as sails. Now those will be other learning curves that will need to be mastered. Though several awesome Vasa builds logs here will allow me to follow in their footsteps. The only variables are for accuracy with running rigging lines, Mark and Frank have debated these issues on their build logs. And, of course, we are still waiting for the Hocker Vasa II book !! (supposedly the rigging bible of this ship).

For the sails my son's wife has one of those "computer" type sewing machines, and she promised that she would do the stitching. Karl (Karleop) and Frank (FrankM) both have great photos of their sails for the ship on their logs--(:-) Both look superb.

No I did not use the milling machine It did not occur to me actually, not having seen how to use it for those details. May think about this for the next four. Hmmm,

Excellent work Michael and attention to detail The 'tops' look great and the bowsprit is coming on well.I think it goes to show that masting and rigging can amount to nearly 50% of the total build if you decide to go to town with the details.
